PART III: THE ECLIPSE OF TRUTH

Chapter 7: The Gathering Storm & Cassius’s Betrayal The atmosphere of Lux Tenebrae turned volatile as a massive, unnatural obsidian cloud rolled over the horizon, swallowing the sun and plunging the academy into total darkness. Panic erupted in the courtyards as students screamed, their wands casting erratic sparks into the gloom. The reinforced silver runes that had illuminated the stone walls began to crackle and fail, suffocated by an overwhelming wave of dark kinetic energy that tasted like copper and old blood on the tongue. In the center of the courtyard, standing amidst the panic with a terrifying, malicious smile, was Professor Cassius Mordren. The forty-one-year-old Master of Ancient Blood Magic seemed entirely in his element, his charismatic facade stripped away to reveal a cruel, obsessive predator. He pointed his heavy obsidian wand directly at Seraphina, who stood trembling, surrounded defensively by Mira and the seven heirs. “The charade ends today, Princess of the Abyss!” Cassius bellowed, his voice amplified by blood magic to echo off the stone spires like a death knell. His eyes gleamed with a sickening, obsessive fascination as he looked at Seraphina. He didn't just want to expose her; he wanted to break her publicly, to revel in the cruelty of destroying her innocence. “You played the part of the fragile, unawakened student so beautifully,” he mocked, his laugh cold and piercing. “But your very blood screams your father's name. You are a lie wrapped in royal silk!” With a violent, sweeping motion of his arm, Cassius drew a deep laceration across his own forearm, channeling his core into a forbidden, dark crimson spell. “Cruor Sunder!” A massive, serrated wave of condensed, boiling blood-magic energy ripped through the air. Julian and Harvey immediately threw themselves to the front, thrusting their wands forward to intercept the blast. “Sphaera Aegis!” they roared, weaving a combined shield of light and aristocratic defense. But Cassius’s cruelty was backed by decades of dark mastery; his spell didn't just strike the barrier, it tore through it, shattering the light magic like fragile glass and sending a backscattering shockwave of agonizing crimson sparks directly into the group. The sheer kinetic force of the blast tore through their ranks, throwing the noble protectors backward onto the ruined flagstones. The shockwave hit Seraphina squarely in the chest, forcing her violently to her knees. Cassius stepped forward, his boots crunching on the stone as he hovered over her, his wand tip glowing with a torturous heat. He used the tip of his wand to forcefully lift her chin, burning her skin slightly, forcing her to look up into his maniacal gaze. “Look at you,” he hissed with absolute malice. “Cowering in the dirt. Let the world see what hides beneath your skin!” With a cruel twist of his wrist, he cast a localized extraction hex. The agonizing pressure caused Seraphina to scream, her hands instinctively pressing hard into the dirt as her internal containment fields collapsed. The physical pain was blinding, but the emotional cruelty was agonizing as Cassius laughed at her suffering. Under his relentless torment, the primordial bindings completely ruptured, and her true magical signature began to leak out from her palms—blindingly bright, a terrifying fusion of roaring fire and churning water that illuminated the entire darkened courtyard for all to see.
