THE MIST OF AETHERA
Episode 1: Strangers in the Mist The annual Seabrook High coastal cruise was supposed to be the highlight of the term. Sun sparkled on the blue water, music played from the boat’s speakers, and everyone had packed bags full of snacks, sunscreen, and beach towels. Zed leaned against the rail, his Z-band glowing a steady bright green as he watched Addison laugh at something Bree had said. Her white hair blew in the warm sea wind, and Zed smiled — moments like this reminded him how far Seabrook had come, where zombies, humans, and werewolves could all hang out together without fear. “Best trip ever, right?” he asked, stepping closer to her. Addison nodded, her eyes shining. “Absolutely. I just wish we could stay out here forever.” But the sky changed in less than five minutes. Dark, heavy clouds rolled in fast, swallowing the sun whole. The wind picked up howling, and the calm sea turned rough, great grey waves crashing over the boat’s sides. The captain shouted for everyone to get below deck, but before anyone could move, a huge wave hit the boat hard, tilting it so far people slipped and fell. The lights cut out completely, and everything went dark, loud, and terrifying. Addison grabbed Zed’s hand tight. “Don’t let go!” “I’ve got you!” Zed called back, but another wave swept over them, and the world went spinning. When Zed woke up, the first thing he felt was warm, soft sand sticking to his clothes. His head ached a little, but his Z-band was still working fine. He sat up slowly, blinking against bright sunlight, and looked around. He was on a wide golden beach, lined with tall palm trees. The air smelled sweet, like jasmine mixed with salt, and a fine silver mist curled around the edges of the thick green jungle that stretched up the hills behind the sand. “Zed?” He turned fast. Addison was sitting just a few feet away, pushing sand from her hair. Nearby, the others were starting to stir too: Wynter, Willa, and Wyatt, shaking themselves off like wet dogs; Bree sitting up and rubbing her elbow; and Bucky, who was already complaining loudly as he stood up. “Where on earth are we?” Bucky demanded, brushing leaves off his cheer uniform. “This isn’t any beach I’ve ever seen near Seabrook. There’s not even a sign or a pier or anything!” Willa sniffed the air, her ears twitching. “Magic. Old, strong magic. Not like anything I’ve smelled before.” Before anyone could say more, a shadow swept down from the treetops, so big it blocked out the sun for a second. Everyone looked up, gasping — it was a bird, larger than any they had ever seen, with feathers like polished silver and wings that stretched wide as a car. It circled low once, then landed gracefully on a big rock nearby. There was a soft flash of light, and in its place stood a girl their age, with sun-browned skin, long hair the color of wheat, and eyes that glowed the exact same bright silver as the bird’s feathers. “Stop right there,” she said, her voice clear and firm, like she was used to being obeyed. “You are not supposed to be here.” Zed stepped forward slowly, holding his hands up to show he meant no harm. “We’re sorry — we didn’t choose to come here. Our boat got caught in that terrible storm. We’re lost.” From the deep shadow between two big trees, another girl stepped out. She was the same height as the silver-eyed girl, and looked so much like her they could only be sisters — but where the first was bright and warm, this one was cool and quiet. Her hair was dark as midnight, and her eyes were pale glowing emerald. She moved so softly she barely seemed to disturb the grass at her feet. “No one comes to Aethera Isle by accident,” she said, her tone serious. “Our mist keeps outsiders away. The storm must have broken the barrier.” “Aethera Isle?” Addison asked, frowning as she stepped closer too. “I’ve read every book about islands near Seabrook. I’ve never heard of it. Are you two… twins?” The dark-haired girl nodded once, but before she could speak again, a low rumble shook the ground under their feet. The mist swirled faster, and strange glowing vines began to twist and creep out from the jungle, as if something was waking up deep inside. Zara’s eyes flared bright green. “It’s too late to talk — they’re already close.” In a blur of shadow and shimmering scales, she shifted. Her body grew long and powerful, her skin turning into smooth dark scales marked with emerald patterns, until she stood before them not as a girl, but as a massive cobra, her hood spread wide, her head rising high above Zed’s own. Wynter growled low, her hackles raised, stepping back beside her brother and sister. Bucky yelped and ducked behind Wyatt, while Bree gasped and grabbed Addison’s arm. “We aren’t going to hurt you!” Zed called out, standing his ground even as the great serpent’s head hovered right in front of his face. “We just want to find a way home!” For a long moment, no one moved. Then the huge cobra tilted its head, as if studying him. High above, the silver-eyed girl shifted back into her eagle form, soaring fast over the treetops. She let out a sharp, piercing cry, and seconds later came sweeping back down. Another flash of light, and Elara stood beside her sister again. “Something broke the seal completely,” Elara said, looking worried. “The dark things locked away in the heart of the island are loose. If they reach the shore… they’ll follow you back to Seabrook.” Zara shifted back to human form, steadying herself against a tree. “We can’t let that happen. But we can’t guard Aethera alone anymore.” Addison straightened her shoulders, the way she did when she was leading cheer practice or solving a problem. “Then let us help. We’ve faced all kinds of strange things in Seabrook — zombies, werewolves, aliens. We know how to stand together.” Zara looked at her, then at Zed, then at the rest of the group — at the werewolves standing ready, at Bree’s brave smile, even at Bucky trying to hide his fear but still standing tall. Slowly, she nodded. “I’m Elara,” the silver-eyed girl said gently. “This is Zara. Welcome to Aethera.” From deep inside the jungle, a long, low roar echoed through the mist, shaking the leaves from the trees. The twins exchanged a serious look. Whatever had been locked away was awake now — and it was coming for them. End of Episode 1
