The first rays of morning sunlight filtered through the gaps in the curtains, casting soft light into the living room. The lingering aroma of tea still hung faintly in the air. The female student, her body heavy with exhaustion, was about to retreat to her room when a sudden, sharp knock at the door startled her. The pounding was loud, angry, and insistent, as though the door might give way at any moment. She froze mid-step and turned to look at the male engineer. His face darkened instantly, a flicker of panic and unease flashing in his eyes.
After a brief hesitation, the male engineer walked toward the door. He paused to take a deep breath before finally opening it. Standing outside was a stylishly dressed woman, her makeup impeccably applied. Her eyes burned with anger and disdain, her sharp features accentuated by a scornful expression. Without hesitation, she stepped forward, her gaze fixed on him like a predator zeroing in on its prey.
“How dare you keep avoiding me?” she spat, her voice cold and laced with fury. “Did you forget what I told you? After everything I’ve done for you these past few months, you think you can just brush me off like this?”
The female student stood frozen nearby, stunned and unsure of what to do. She had never seen the male engineer look so flustered. His lips quivered slightly, as if he were searching for words but couldn’t find them.
“Calm down,” he said weakly, his voice barely steady as his eyes darted nervously. “Let’s talk about this rationally.”
“Calm down?” the woman sneered, her voice rising in pitch and intensity. “You want me to calm down? You toyed with me for months, and now you think you can walk away just like that? I gave you my time, my energy, and this is how you repay me?”
His expression grew more strained with every word, his voice dropping to a low, almost pleading tone. “I’ve told you before, this was always going to be temporary. Surely you understood that. I can’t offer you more than this.”
Her anger only deepened, tears welling up at the corners of her eyes. With a sudden, sharp motion, she pulled out her phone and thrust it toward him. “You think I’ll just let you off the hook that easily? You owe me, and if you don’t make it right, I’ll make sure everyone knows exactly who you are—what you’ve done. That righteous facade you wear? I’ll tear it apart for everyone to see.”
The male engineer paled visibly, her words hitting him like a blow. He stood frozen in the doorway, and the tension between them hung thick in the air, charged like the aftermath of a lightning strike.
The female student remained rooted in place, utterly bewildered. She had never imagined that the male engineer—so composed, detached, and seemingly disillusioned with life—could be caught up in such a chaotic and emotionally charged situation. The man who had spent late nights discussing ideals and nihilism now appeared deeply hypocritical, his aloofness nothing more than a fragile mask for his entanglement in messy desires.
Quietly, she turned away and retreated to her room. As she closed the door behind her, a wave of profound disappointment and revulsion washed over her. The person she had thought she could confide in, someone she believed shared her struggles and perspectives, was revealed to be just another ordinary man, mired in the same base realities he claimed to disdain. His existence made her question not only her pursuit of ideals but also her faith in the authenticity of human connections. Perhaps those late-night conversations weren’t a search for truth, but a way for him to escape the consequences of his choices and rationalize his failures.
That night, she lay awake, her thoughts tangled and chaotic. His hypocrisy cast a long shadow over her beliefs about humanity and her aspirations. An intangible loneliness enveloped her, as though all relationships and interactions were nothing more than self-deceptive illusions, fleeting and hollow.
For the first time, she truly doubted whether any connection could transcend the selfishness and frailty of human nature.
