“Just go away...” Sierra whispered to me… Her voice ringed through my ears. Go away? GO AWAY? I was fuming. I wasn’t going to sit back and watch while she ran off with Michael.
“You want me to go?” Michael asked her.
“Yes Michael, go away, Sierra and I have to talk!” I shouted in his face. It was no use though, he could hear me, and he couldn’t even see me.
“Not you Michael. I mean I want you to stay,” she smiled up at him.
“You can’t be serious Sierra?” I huffed. She was ignoring me.
Then Michael asked her, “are you alright?”
“No she’s not alright! Her boyfriend died and now you’re trying to take my place!” I yelled again into his face.
“I’m sorry, I was just…lost in my own head. Silly me ya know.”
“Unbelievable.”
They were heading inside and I followed Michael, Standing next to him. Sierra was giving me a death glare as Michael was closing the door.
“Ummm, are you hungry? I finished cleaning the kitchen for you and thought maybe we could start cooking together, if you’re up for it of course,” my brother said softly.
Staring directly at me Sierra spoke, “yes. MICHAEL, I would love to cook with you.” She turned her gaze towards Michael and continued, if you could excuse me though, I need to go to the bathroom. You can start taking everything out and start washing off the produce. Thanks Mike.”
She began thudding her way towards the bathroom as I followed. Alright she wasn’t going to talk to me in front of my brother. What’s she got to hide, I wonder. As soon as She slammed the door to the bathroom, in my face, I walked through and gave her a disappointing look.
“Mathew, why are you here? It’s bad enough I had to watch you disappear last night, watching you choke on nothing. I’m hurting Matt and every time I see or think about you, I hurt,” she whispered.
“Sierra, I love you, I can’t just leave you—“
“Mathew, YOU DIED. As far as I’m concerned you’ve already left.” Her face fell and I could see she was trying to hold back tears. If only I could touch her…hold her…tell her everything is going to be alright.
“I’m Sorry Sierra, but when I saw you today with Mike—“
She cut me off, her stare turning from sadness to anger in a flash. “You’ve been watching me?!” She tried to contain her anger into a low shout but I could hear the rage in her voice.
“I saw you and Mike and I just—I didn’t know what to think. You two were getting a little too close for my liking.”
“That’s none of your concern Matt,” she huffed.
“How is it not? You’re my girlfriend Sierra!” I shouted back at her.
“Mathew, our relationship died when you did. Why are you not understanding that? I loved you so much Mathew and your death nearly broke me.” She looked away from my eyes, not able to face me any longer as she said, “Michael has been the only shoulder I can lean on. The only bright light now in such a dim world.”
I narrowed my eyes at her. “What are you not telling me? Is there something going on between you two?”
Her face flushed again, she forced herself to meet my eyes, “There’s nothing you have to concern yourself with Matt. Michael has been nothing but kind to me.”
“Yeah I’m sure he has by the way he stares at you,” I muttered.
“Matt, I don’t have time for this. I have a meal to cook,” she said while walking through me and to the door, reaching for the handle.
“Cooking with MICHAEL, right?” I said, following her out.
“That’s enough,” she whispered back to me and continued towards the kitchen.
I couldn’t believe her. She loves me and loses me and now that I’m back, she no longer wants a part of me? She sure seems to want a part of my brother. I could feel the rage building inside me as I watched my brother flirt with Sierra and making her smile. I kept trying to get Sierra's attention but all she seemed to do was tell me to shut up anytime Michael wasn’t looking.
After a few tedious hours of desperately trying to make her listen to me, I gave up. Fine, I wasn’t going to stand here any longer watching my brother hit on my girlfriend. I don’t care what Sierra says, for as long as I’m around, I am still her boyfriend and she is MINE.
As I ran through the door of the house I couldn’t help but scream. I tried to let out all my fury, screaming at the world in front of me
*POP*
What’s this? A lamppost across the street went out. Interesting. Did I do that? I could feel my face grinning into a devilish smile. I ran up to the light post and gawked at how the light inside seemed to have just exploded. Well isn’t this fascinating? As I ran down the street I screamed with all my might, now focusing on each lamppost, watching as every single one of them popped.
“I see you’ve let anger take hold of you, my boy.” A calm voice spoke behind me.
“Ezekiel, how is it you always seem to find me?” I asked the old man as I turned around to face him, still sporting a Cheshire grin on my face.
“I have my ways. I see you have discovered one of yours,” Ezekiel said, in the same calm voice as before.
“We have powers? Don’t we old man?” I could feel the excitement building inside of me.
“Be careful my boy, you do not want to let the monster inside of you out,” he said pointing at my chest.
“What all can we do?” I asked excitedly.
“My boy, it is not wise to play with fire.”
“Answer me Ezekiel. What. Can. We. Do?”
“We can cause chaos,” he paused, looking into my eyes. “I do not advise on using powers such as this,” he gestured to the dark lampposts. “Our spirits are here neutrally. If we attempt to cause chaos then that balance changes. We become destructive and we can destroy the living who reside around us. You do not want to create chaos, my boy.” The old man sounded stern.
Why can’t he just tell me? I’m not planning on destroying anyone. I just want to get their attention. Sierra’s attention. I wasn’t going to let her go. There is no way in hell, I was going to let my brother have her. The way he was looking at her…touching her…I could feel the anger inside of me rise again. Oh I was going to get their attention alright.
“Fine, if you won’t tell me, I’ll just have to figure it out myself.”
