What?
Deep within the forest of Everdusk, where sunlight barely pierced through the dense canopy, lived an old man known only as the Lantern Keeper. Travelers whispered about him, claiming his lanterns could guide lost souls to their destinies—or their doom. One stormy evening, a young woman named Elara stumbled upon the Keeper's hut. Her clothes were soaked, her boots muddied, and her face etched with despair. “Please,” she begged, “I’ve lost my way.” The Keeper, with a beard as white as snow and eyes like ember coals, nodded slowly. “The forest has a way of testing those who wander into it. What do you seek?” “Freedom,” Elara said, her voice trembling. “I fled my village—they wanted to bind me to a life I do not want.” The Keeper gestured toward a wall lined with lanterns, each glowing faintly. “Choose one. Its flame will guide you, but beware—once chosen, the path cannot be undone.” Elara hesitated. Each lantern seemed to pulse with a life of its own, and as her gaze swept across them, one lantern in the corner flickered brighter. Drawn to it, she reached out and lifted it gently. The Keeper nodded approvingly. “A brave choice.” As soon as the lantern touched her hands, the storm outside ceased. The air grew still, and the forest seemed to hold its breath. The lantern’s light expanded, revealing a narrow path that shimmered like silver thread. “Follow it,” the Keeper said. “But remember: freedom has its price.” Elara stepped onto the path, the lantern guiding her through twisting roots and shadowed glades. With each step, memories of her old life faded, replaced by visions of distant lands and endless horizons. The burdens of expectation lifted from her shoulders, and she felt lighter than air. When she emerged from the forest, dawn broke over a vast, open plain. The lantern dimmed, its light spent, but Elara no longer needed it. Freedom was hers at last. Far behind her, the Keeper stood in his hut, adding another lantern to his wall, its flame now faint but eternal. And so, the forest waited for its next traveler.
