She is not merely human.

In her past life, she was the lost Phoenix Sovereign of the Spirit Realm — a being whose death once shattered the balance between the three worlds.

THE NIGHT HEAVEN TURNED AWAY
Chapter One: The Night Heaven Turned Away The storm began before sunset. By midnight, the skies above Mount Yun looked as though the heavens themselves had split apart. Rain poured endlessly over the forest, soaking the ancient stone steps that led to a forgotten shrine hidden deep within the mountains. Wind screamed through the trees. Thunder shook the earth. And inside the ruined temple, a woman fought to keep herself alive. Her name was Lin Yue. She knelt on the cold stone floor, one trembling hand gripping the edge of a broken altar while the other pressed against her stomach. Sweat clung to her pale skin despite the freezing air around her. Another sharp pain tore through her body. A cry escaped her lips before she could stop it. The candles beside her flickered violently. “No…” she whispered through uneven breaths. “Not yet… please…” Blood stained the white robes beneath her knees. She was running out of time. Outside, the sound of galloping horses echoed faintly through the mountain path. They were coming. Her frightened eyes moved toward the temple entrance. Even through the storm, she could see distant golden lights moving between the trees like wandering stars. Immortal soldiers. They had finally found her. Fear tightened painfully around her chest. For months she had hidden among mortals, moving from village to village, never staying in one place long enough to be discovered. She had prayed every night for just enough time to bring her child into the world safely. But Heaven had never intended to let the child live. Because this child should never have existed. Lin Yue closed her eyes tightly as another contraction hit. Memories flooded her mind against her will. Golden robes. Warm hands. Soft promises whispered beneath moonlit trees. An immortal man who had once sworn he would protect her forever. Until Heaven discovered the truth. A mortal carrying the child of an immortal was considered a sin against the balance of the realms. Forbidden. Unforgivable. And the punishment for such a crime was death. Not only for the mother— but for the child as well. A sudden crash of thunder shook the shrine. Lin Yue gasped sharply as pain spread through her entire body. The baby was coming. Tears burned her eyes. “I’m sorry,” she whispered shakily, cradling her stomach. “I’m so sorry you were born into this world…” Outside, the voices of soldiers grew louder. “Search every corner of the mountain!” “She cannot escape Heaven’s judgment!” “Find the child!” Lin Yue’s breathing became uneven. Panic clawed at her heart. She looked around desperately. The shrine was ancient and abandoned, filled with broken statues covered in dust and old burn marks from fires long forgotten. Rainwater dripped from cracks in the ceiling, tapping softly against the stone floor. At the center of the temple stood the remains of a goddess statue. But hidden behind it— buried in darkness— was something else. Another altar. One no immortal would dare approach. Black candles surrounded it. Ancient markings stained the stone like dried blood. And carved into the wall behind it was the symbol of the Demon Realm. Lin Yue immediately looked away. Fear flickered across her face. Three years ago, she had stood before that same altar and made the worst decision of her life. Back then, she had been dying. Immortal hunters had cornered her after discovering her relationship with an immortal prince. Injured and alone, she had wandered into these mountains with nowhere left to run. Until someone answered her prayers. Or perhaps her desperation. A demon. A creature feared even by immortals. He had saved her life that night. But demons never gave kindness freely. Everything came with a price. And she had agreed to pay it. Lin Yue swallowed hard. Her hand slowly tightened against her stomach. “No…” she whispered to herself. “I can’t…” Another painful cry escaped her lips. The baby’s spiritual energy was becoming unstable. Something was wrong. Very wrong. Then suddenly— the temple doors burst open from the force of the storm. Cold wind rushed inside. The candles flickered violently. Lin Yue froze. For one terrifying moment, she thought the soldiers had found her already. But no one entered. Only darkness. The storm outside seemed to grow unnaturally quiet. Even the rain softened. And then— a voice echoed through the shrine. “You returned sooner than I expected.” Low. Smooth. Dangerously calm. Lin Yue’s entire body stiffened. Slowly, shadows gathered near the black altar at the back of the temple. The darkness twisted unnaturally, almost alive, before taking the shape of a man. He stepped forward silently. Tall. Elegant. Terrifying. Long black robes flowed around him like smoke, embroidered with silver patterns that shifted whenever lightning flashed through the shrine. His face was pale, almost inhumanly flawless, but it was his eyes that made people fear him. Deep crimson. Eyes that did not belong to any mortal creature. The Demon Lord. Lin Yue immediately lowered her gaze. “You…” He studied her silently for a moment before his eyes drifted toward the blood beneath her. “You’re giving birth.” It wasn’t a question. Lin Yue struggled to speak. “I didn’t come to ask for help.” “Mm.” The demon walked slowly around the shrine, his fingers brushing across the dusty statues carelessly. “But you will.” His voice held absolute certainty. Another contraction hit. Lin Yue cried out softly, collapsing against the floor. The demon watched her quietly. No concern. No pity. Only calm observation. “You humans are fragile creatures,” he murmured. “You break so easily for the sake of love.” Lin Yue’s eyes filled with tears. “I loved him.” At that, the demon gave a faint smile. “A foolish thing to do.” Pain twisted through her again. She screamed this time. And moments later— a baby’s cry finally filled the temple. The sound echoed softly against the stone walls. Lin Yue froze in disbelief. Then relief flooded her face. “My baby…” With trembling hands, she lifted the infant into her arms. A little girl. So small. So warm. Tears slipped down Lin Yue’s cheeks as she stared at her daughter’s tiny face. “She’s alive…” But suddenly— the baby stopped crying. The warmth in her body disappeared almost instantly. Lin Yue’s smile faded. “…No.” The child’s breathing weakened. Then stopped completely. Silence filled the shrine. Lin Yue stared down at her daughter in horror. “No… no, please…” She shook the baby gently. Nothing. Panic consumed her. “Please wake up…” Her voice broke into sobs. “She can’t die… please…” The demon remained silent. Lin Yue looked up at him desperately. And for the first time since he appeared— she bowed her head before him completely. “Save her.” The demon’s crimson eyes narrowed slightly. “You know the cost of asking me for anything.” “I know.” “If I save the child,” he said softly, “your soul belongs to me when the contract ends.” Lin Yue’s hands trembled violently around the baby. Outside, immortal soldiers were getting closer. Golden spiritual light flashed through the trees. They were nearly here. Tears streamed endlessly down her face as she looked at her daughter one last time. Then she whispered— “I accept.”
