Episode 4: The Mark of Presence
Brittany told herself she wouldn’t look for him.
But she did.
Every reflection in a window. Every dark corner. Every passing figure in a hoodie made her heart jump before she could stop it.
She hated that.
Hated that someone could invade her thoughts without ever speaking a word.
That night, the air felt thicker than usual. The streetlights flickered as she walked home, her pace steady but her senses alert. She refused to look afraid.
Across the street, Lucifer followed — closer than before.
He could see the tension in her shoulders now. The awareness. She wasn’t oblivious anymore.
She was evolving.
When Brittany reached her apartment building, she quickly unlocked the door and slipped inside. The hallway was quiet. Safe.
Or so she thought.
She climbed the stairs, keys still in hand, and stopped when she reached her door.
Something was different.
Her heart began to pound.
On the floor, resting against her door—
Was a single red ribbon.
Her breath caught.
She hadn’t left anything there.
Slowly, she bent down and picked it up. The fabric was soft, deliberate. Intentional.
Not random.
Not accidental.
A chill ran through her.
Someone had been here.
Someone had stood exactly where she was standing now.
Watching.
Her pulse raced as she hurried inside and locked the door behind her.
Across the street, partially hidden in darkness, Lucifer watched the faint light switch on in her apartment window.
He imagined the moment she found it.
The confusion.
The realization.
The fear.
He didn’t need to touch her yet.
He just needed her to understand.
She wasn’t alone anymore.
And soon, the ribbon wouldn’t be the only sign he’d been there.
