Chapter 1 Slept together
“Kiss!”
"Kiss!!"
"Kiss!!!"
The crowd chants filled Sierra's ears, her heart racing.
No...
Her chest heaved up and down for air, her eyes glued to two people in the middle of the crowd.
One of then smiled, and Natalie watched as he placed his lips on the other one.
"No..." She whispered, a tear slipping from her eyes.
...
No.
No.
No, no, no.
This had to be a nightmare.
Sierra Phillips squeezed her eyes shut so tightly that tiny stars burst behind her eyelids.
"No!" She suddenly yelled, sitting upright.
Sierra panted for air, sweat dripping from her forehead. It was a nightmare.
A nightmare.
A dull ache pounded behind her temples while warm morning sunlight slipped through the half-open curtains and settled across her face.
The headache alone was enough to make her groan. "...Ugh."
Every muscle in her body protested as though she'd been hit by a truck.
What on earth had happened last night?
Slowly... The memories came back.
Brian's birthday.
The music, the light, the people...
Then...
Something heavy tightened around her waist.
Sierra frowned.
She couldn't roll over.
Her heartbeat skipped.
Slowly...
Very, very slowly...
She looked down.
A masculine arm rested across her stomach.
Not just any arm.
One she recognized.
"No..."
Her voice came out as nothing more than a whisper.
She followed the arm upward.
Broad shoulders.
Bare skin.
Messy dirty-blond hair.
A face she'd known for over ten years.
"...Will?"
Silence.
The figure beside her continued sleeping peacefully.
Her eyes dropped again.
His shoulder was bare.
His back was bare.
Her stomach twisted violently.
Almost mechanically, Sierra peeked beneath the blanket covering her body.
Her blood turned to ice.
She wasn't wearing anything.
Not a single piece of clothing.
"No..."
Her breathing quickened.
"No..."
She checked again, praying her eyes had somehow lied.
They hadn't. "Oh my God."
Her head snapped toward the sleeping man.
"WILLIAM!"
William Twist jerked awake so violently he nearly rolled off the bed.
"What?"
His sleepy blue eyes searched the room before landing on Sierra's horrified face.
"What happened?"
"What happened?" Sierra shrieked. "That's what you're asking me?"
William blinked.
His brain was still half asleep.
Then he noticed something.
He looked down.
At the blanket.
At his bare shoulder.
"...Oh."
"Oh?!" Sierra nearly choked. "Your reaction is oh?!"
Instinctively, both of them grabbed opposite ends of the blanket and pulled them tightly against themselves.
They stared.
Neither spoke, they didn't even breathe. They just stared at each other in shock.
Finally...
Sierra swallowed.
"...William," she called him slowly,
"Yeah?"
"...Are we naked?"
Such a bloody obvious question.
William looked down again.
A long pause followed before he finally answered. "...Unfortunately."
For one full second...
Neither moved.
Then...
"AHHHHHHH!"
Her scream exploded through the room.
William flinched so hard he covered one ear. "Sia!"
Sierra held her side of the sheets tighter. "What happened?" She asked still in shock.
"I don't know!"
"You don't know?"
"I literally woke up thirty seconds ago!"
She stared at him with wide, panicked eyes. This couldn't be real.
This wasn't happening.
She was in bed.
Naked.
With William.
William Twist.
Her best friend.
Her chest tightened.
She looked beneath the blanket again as though hoping reality would finally correct itself.
It didn't.
"Oh God..."
Her voice trembled. "Why am I naked?" She asked again.
William opened his mouth.
Closed it again.
His mind was finally waking up.
Unfortunately... So were last night's memories.
His expression changed.
Just slightly.
Sierra noticed.
Her heart sank.
"...William."
He rubbed a hand over his face.
"Sia..."
"No."She shook her head.
"No, don't 'Sia' me."
William inhaled.
Fuck.
"You were drunk." He finally said, running his hand through his hair.
Her stomach dropped.
Wait... Her dream rushed back to her head. Where he was kissing someone.
'That wasn't a nightmare was it?' Sierra quivered.
Oh God...
Then another memory appeared inside her head. It was of her kissing someone, and it wasn't Brian.
Sierra's eyes widened in shock.
This couldn't be happening. "I..." She pointed at her chest, "I... kissed you?"
William gulped. "Yeah... You practically forced yourself on me. But I kissed you back...And then..."
He stopped talking. He couldn't bring himself to finish the sentence.
He didn't need to.
Sierra's face lost every trace of colour.
"We..."
William looked away. "...Yeah."
Her lips parted but no words came out.
William didn't need to say anything else; the answer was written all over his face.
"Sia." William finally spoke, calling her name.
She wasn't listening. "Sia."
She kept backing toward the edge of the bed.
"Sia, look at me."
"I can't..." Sierra shook her head.
William noticed the way her face slowly began turning blue.
She wasn't breathing.
He reacted quickly, shifting towards her. "You need to breathe."
"I can't breathe!" Sierra snapped.
"Sierra."
"I can't... "
Her elbow slipped. "Oh!"
The mattress disappeared beneath her, and she she tumbled off the bed.
"Sierra!"
William reacted on instinct.
He caught her wrist before her head hit the floor, lowering her awkwardly onto the rug instead.
The second his fingers touched her... She froze.
Then immediately jerked away.
"Don't touch me!"
William released her at once as though burned from her touch.
The room became painfully quiet.
Sierra remained flat on her back, staring blankly at the ceiling.
William slowly sat back down on the edge of the bed.
Neither spoke.
The only sound was Sierra's breathing.
At least she had begun breathing.
In... Out.
In... Out.
Almost two full minutes passed before her heartbeat finally settled.
Then...
Fragments of last night drifted back.
The birthday party.
Brian.
His smile.
Walking toward him.
Then...
The kiss... That bloody kiss was real.
Her chest tightened all over again.
She squeezed her eyes shut.
"...Damn it."
William finally broke the silence.
"You drank way too much."
'You think?' Sierra wanted to snap but her head hurt too much for that, and she didn't have the energy. Instead, she let out a sigh before speaking in a sarcastic note. "I noticed."
"I brought you back here because there wasn't another hotel nearby."
She nodded slowly. Then asked, very quietly, "...Did you take advantage of me?"
Another obvious question.
Sierra immediately squeezed her face as soon as she asked the question. That was something she never thought she would have to ask him.
William's head snapped toward her. "What?"
She didn't look at him. "I was drunk. You weren't unconscious."
Silence.
"You kissed me first."
More silence.
"I stopped you."
Another. "You kissed me again."
He swallowed. "I should've stopped you a second time."
His voice was low.
Filled with something that sounded dangerously close to regret. "I didn't."
Sierra stared at the ceiling.
Slowly...
Very slowly the rest of her missing memories flooded her brain.
The missing memories returned.
She remembered leaning in.
She remembered kissing him.
She remembered pulling him closer.
"Oh..."
She covered her face with both hands.
"Oh no."
William laughed once. A humourless laugh. "Yeah."
Sierra groaned. It actually happened.
"My head is killing me." She winced, finally realizing how strong her head was hurting.
"That's called a hangover."
She peeked at him through her fingers.
"I don't know what to say about all of these. But... We've been friends since forever, this..." Sierra finally removed her from her face, sitting up. "...there isn't much opposite gender friendship where mistakes don't happen, right? Yeah."
That surprised William. He expects her to be so... Understanding.
She sighed before carefully standing, refusing to look in his direction. "My dress..."
William silently pointed toward the chair in the corner.
Everything had been folded neatly.
She paused.
"You folded it?"
"...Yeah."
She quickly looked away.
For some reason...
That tiny gesture made this whole situation feel even more real.
A few minutes later she was fully dressed again.
She rubbed her temples.
"I need coffee."
William looked at her.
"...Coffee?"
"Or milk."
A beat.
"...Or anesthesia."
Despite everything...
A tiny smile almost escaped him.
Almost.
Without another word, Sierra opened the bedroom door and walked downstairs.
The smell of freshly brewed coffee greeted her almost immediately.
Exactly what she needed.
She poured herself a steaming cup.
Maybe caffeine could erase poor decisions.
She wrapped both hands around the mug.
"I slept with William."
She sighed.
"I was supposed to confess to Brian."
Another sigh left her lips. "God, I really wasn't thinking."
"Thinking about what?" The deep voice came from directly behind her.
What the fuck...
He heard her?!
Warm breath brushed the back of her neck. Sierra froze.
She would recognize that voice anywhere.
Very slowly...
She turned around.
Brian Twist stood there.
One hand tucked into his pocket. The other held a bouquet of white roses.
His blue eyes met hers.
"I've been looking for you."
Sierra's fingers loosened. 'Why is he... Why is he holding flowers?'
The coffee mug slipped from her hands.
It shattered across the kitchen floor.
