Chapter 1
Rena’s POV Rena took another snap at the sky. Collecting pictures of the sky is another kind of hobby for her. She smiled at the bird, curiously looking at her from a branch of the tree she sat under. The tree was in full blossom. It’s the middle of spring, and she couldn’t have been happier. Rena took a picture of the bird, and it was more curious than frightened. She couldn’t help but speak to the bird. “Hello dear,” she waved at the bird, but it flew away. She figured moving her hand wasn’t the best idea. She gulped the rest of her coffee and then threw the cup into the bin beside the bench. She made her way back to the hospital building with k-pop blasting through her headphones. As soon as she stepped into the reception, the bells rang indicating the end of the lunch break. She smiled at Molly, the receptionist. Molly was an intern and just recently graduated from Green gold high. It was where Rena had schooled. Where she did some horrible and crazy things. She recalled the fun times she had with her best friend too. Unfortunately, she dropped out of university to go hard on baking. Her head was never made for anything outside the kitchen. Well, long story short, she went off to own one of the best bakeries in Little Cliff. Little Cliff is an island with three mountains and lots of hills. Hence, the name, Little Cliff. Although Little Cliff is an island, it has a long bridge that connects it to the rest of the country. It is bigger than an average city but has been refused to be called a state by the government. She took out her phone from her coat once she was seated on her chair. Rena texts Cara, her best friend, and asks her not to forget her appointment with her, this afternoon. Cara replies with an excuse, as always. Apparently, she had a late order of 250 cupcakes for a children’s party. Rena was really beginning to worry about her health. Cara hasn’t come in for a checkup for three months now. Rena was also worried because she really had a thing about health. She was a freaking doctor after all. She checked her laptop for the appointments she had for the rest of the day. After scraping out Cara’s name, she had two more appointments. One with Mrs. Green about constant abdominal pain, although she was pretty sure it was as a result of drinking soda literally every five minutes. Her other appointment was with a sixteen-year-old named Pricilla. Pricilla said she had missed her period for five months now. Now that’s a problem. She made a mental note after her appointment to go to Cara’s house to get some of those cupcakes because she was certain as hell Cara was not going to make just 250. Rena popped the last grape into her mouth, as she wrote down the prescription for the medicine Pricilla should get. “So this is all?” she said, and handed it over to her mom. “Will I see my period this month then?” Pricilla asked pitifully. Hopefully, if my diagnosis is right, these medicines will help. If there is no progress in two months, then we will conduct a full body scan to help analyze the situation in detail.”Rena replied to the girl. Pricilla sniffed, “I really hope it doesn’t come to that.” Rena looked pitifully at the young girl. How distraught she must be feeling. She quickly went round and gave Pricilla a tight hug where she was seated on the sofa with her mom. “Shush Pricilla,” she remarked when she burst into tears. “You are going to have your period again,” she gently stroked her hair. “I know you definitely want to become a mom one day and that’s why you are so scared.” Pricilla raised her head and looked Rena in the eye and muttered, “Yes.” “But you want to know something amazing?” Rena said happily. “What?” she asked, with a glimmer of hope on her tear-stricken face. “It is possible to have children without seeing your period.” “Really?” her eyes lit up. “Seriously, is that real?” her mother asked. “Yes dear. Sometimes a lady only releases eggs when there is sperm available. I really don’t know how to explain it to you but it works for real.” “So how do we know that is her condition?” her mother inquired. “I don’t know that for sure,” Rena pulled out of the embrace and smiled at Pricilla medication. Just take your medication and come back in two months for a checkup.” Pricilla hugged her, “thank you, Doctor Rena.” “You are welcome, my dear,” she stroked her twice and then broke the embrace. The young girl walked out of Rena’s office joyful and bubbly. More than the opposite of what she was when she came here. Rena couldn’t help but feel proud of herself for the hundredth time today. She checked her watch and it was exactly four. Her shift ends by six, and she couldn’t wait to go home to some nicely baked cupcakes. Struck with boredom, she took out her phone and began watching i********: Reels. Almost everything on her feed was about Mafians and how cool they were. They ruled the underworld and gave you a villain type of love. Rena was far from being a bad person, but she was deeply fascinated by these particular people. She spent her free time fantasizing if they were real and what it would cost her to be loved by one of them. After watching for a while, her thirty-minute reminder appeared on her screen and reminded her to do something meaningful. She quickly set her phone aside and began answering and replying to questions on the hospital’s web-page. When she was done, it was only ten minutes to six, and she was sure the doctor taking her place was already in the building. Suddenly, the sound of the ambulance driving into the complex brought her back to reality. She looked outside the window and saw the paramedics rush in with bodies on different stretchers. From where she watched high up, she couldn’t see properly, but she did notice that all the victims had something in common…burns. There had been a fire.
