The Beginning
"Are you sure you don't need us to send you over?" Esther said as they made their way to Cellestine's car.
"I'm sure, Aunt Esther. I can handle it." She replied as she tried hard to keep a calm expression.
Cellestine tried very hard to stop her tears from falling. No matter how many gallons of tears she spills, she will not be able to bring them back. She has to face it. She's alone now.
They finally arrived in front of Cellestine's car and Aunt Esther hugged her for the last time. "I know you're thinking that you're all alone now. But don't forget that I am still here. Me, your uncle Jude and your cousin, Max."
"I know."
With that said, she hopped into the car and stepped on the gas. Aunt Esther waved her goodbye but Cellestine did not bother to respond since the car was tinted and she would not be able to see it anyway.
It's only been 3 days since her parents' funeral service. She still can't believe that they were gone in just a snap. She was with them when their car was hit by a truck but she was lucky enough to be saved...
Was she really lucky?
People around her told her that she was really lucky to have survived the accident with only a few bruises and scratches, no serious injuries. But she wouldn't call herself fortunate. She really feels cheated. Why did they both have to leave her?
Sure, she will not starve. She is rich. She has enough money to last a lifetime. Heck, she will survive even if she decides not to work and just live off the dividends from the company shares left behind by her parents. A multi-million company is under her name and the school she was going to go to was also transferred to her name last month. A coincidence, right?
She's still young at 18 years old. She was just in the final year of her senior high and was supposed to spend the last weeks of vacation with her family. Now, this has happened.
If Cellestine was to be honest, she felt so lost at the moment, that she wanted to just give up everything altogether and go after her parents. But she knew she couldn't do that.
The loss of her parents also meant that a lot of people lost their bosses. Her parents are hers, yes. But she also understood that a lot of people rely on them too. They might be her parents, but outside their home, they are powerful people that serve as a pillar to others.
She still has a responsibility towards those people, being the only heir. Their company still needed her. And the most important thing: she will still make those people pay.
She was not blind. She knew that something was fishy about their accident. Was it even an accident? That truck appeared out of nowhere. The road was so wide and there was almost no other vehicle on the road at that moment, but it really had to hit their car. Why did it seem that the truck driver deliberately hit them? The truck driver is also still missing. She was sure something else was going on and she would get to the bottom of this.
Just a few minutes into her journey, she found a car, almost identical to her own car, flying past her. Yes, that's how she would describe it. The car was driving so fast as if it was flying. She shook her head. There are so many reckless drivers nowadays. Cellestine decided to slow down her driving speed. She doesn't want to get into another car accident.
She released a deep sigh and tried to shake the sad memory again. Then she started to play soothing music on the car's music player in an attempt to calm her mind and just focus on driving.
Sure enough, about less than half the road left for her drive, she found that the car, which was almost identical to hers, was parked on the roadside with an obvious dent on the left side of the car trunk. There was another vehicle with its car hood also deformed.
She could imagine the scene where the first car tried to swerve out of the way to avoid the second car but, because of the speed, the collision was unavoidable.
Rolling down the car windows while slowing down, she reached the accident site. She could see uniformed officers and several other cars parked near the area. There were no ambulances, though. "Hey, everything alright here?" She asked the nearest person to her when her car finally stopped.
It was a girl. Probably just a couple of years older than her. The girl smiled at her. "Everything is under control. My car is not good, though." The girl added, pointing to the car with a dent in the trunk.
At that moment, Cellestine realized she was talking to the owner of the car which flew past hers earlier. She took a second glance at the girl, looking for any signs of injury. There was none, though. Nothing visible at least.
"Are you alright?" Cellestine asked, concerned.
"Yeah. I'm not injured in any way. Thanks for asking." The girl smiled and looked around. Then she said again, "You should go ahead. It's getting dark."
Cellestine looked at the setting sun and realized that it was indeed getting dark. Looking at the time, it was already past five. "I really should go ahead." She said, facing the girl. "Stay safe." She added before starting the car.
The girl just smiled knowingly. And started going in the direction of the officers.
Unbeknownst to Cellestine, the girl she had just talked to, and all the people around her had just saved her life.
"Is everything going well?" Harvey said right after picking up the phone.
"We've cleared out two ambushes already. She's nearing the campus premises so there should no longer be any problem." Bryce, his right-hand man, responded.
"That's good. Continue to monitor her until she enters the school premises. Absolutely no harm must fall on her." Harvey added.
"Yes, sir." Bryce ended the call and spoke to Isagani, who was monitoring Cellestine's progress beside him. "Any new things?" He asked.
"We've cleared the road before and after her. There should be no more problems."
***
After almost two hours of driving, she finally arrived at her destination: Haynes University.
She'd only been here a few times. Twice, to be exact. First, when she was still in grade school, her parents brought her here for the foundation anniversary. The second was just last month after her 18th birthday, when they signed the documents for the transfer of school ownership to her name.
Her parents always mentioned to her that it was a tradition of the Haynes family to pass on the ownership of the school to the next heir once he or she reached 18 years old. Also, once the said age is reached, the next heir would have to transfer to Haynes University.
The same thing can be said about the Haynes Group of companies. She was also trained from a young age on how to manage their business. When she reached 18, all the company assets under her parents were immediately transferred to her. This has always been the case in their family. This is also the reason why her parents never forced her to stay in Valen City and be locked up by her responsibilities before she was of the right age.
It can be said that her parents, although indulgent to her, have always trained her to be the next heir. They prepared her for this moment. But thinking that she would have to face these challenges alone makes it really sad for her.
Taking a deep breath, she tried to focus on what was in front of her.
She opened her car window so the guard would recognize her.
"Good afternoon, Miss Haynes," he said. Cellestine just nodded as a response. She's not being rude. She's just so tired that all she wants to do is rest. The car ride was energy-draining. She now regretted declining the offers of several people to drive her over.
After she parked her car, she headed straight to the administration building. There were only a few students roaming around. Most of them were here for the final day of enrollment, or were early birds that came here to prepare their stuff in their dormitories. It's still Friday and classes will be starting on Monday.
Yeah, surprise. Haynes University is a boarding school. She doesn't have time to enjoy the scenery of the school, though. Cellestine went into the administration building and got greeted by the front desk officer.
"Good afternoon, Miss Haynes. Please head straight to Mr. Guevarra's office. He is expecting you." Again, she just nodded in response. She's dead tired.
Without knocking, she went inside the Administrator's office. Her uncle seemed not surprised.
"I see you have come," he said, then rose from his chair to welcome Cellestine in a bone-crushing hug. "Our Missy's here already. I told you that you could rest, right? It's only been a few days," Uncle Harvey said with a worried tone. He's Cellestine's mother's brother and also her closest uncle.
"I know," she said. "But I just can't stay with Aunt Esther. I can't tell her this, but I really feel more sad when I see them. Complete."
Uncle Harvey released her from the hug. "You're not alone. Okay? There are still a lot of people here who care for you."
Cellestine smiled at him. A sad but genuine smile. "I know."
Then she walked past him and pushed the button that would open his personal quarters. "Let me rest here. 'kay?"
"But you have your own quarters, Missy."
"Nah, I don't have the energy to take another step. I really need to rest. Don't wake me up!" Then she slammed the door shut. She faintly heard him murmur something but she barely understood it. She jumped to his bed and welcomed the sleep that had been bugging her since earlier.
