22 Lark sparrows sang their complicated song,: a melodious jumble of clear notes and trills interspersed with harsh buzzes and churrs. Earlier that day, a summer storm passed through and now there was no sign of it. Chelsea leaned back in the lounger, closed her eyes, and lifted her face to the hot, late-afternoon August sun. Soft snores made her smile and she opened one eye to observe her dog. Sage was sleeping on her back between Chelsea’s legs. Eyes shut again, she sighed and settled back in the chair.
