24 Chelsea stared through the open-screened window of her bedroom, watching the Western Kingbirds with their lemon-yellow bellies, grey heads and backs, and black tails, hawking for insects. The flycatchers were prolific this season, returning from their winter migration in Mexico to their summer home here in Canada’s arid desert. Won’t be long before they head south again. Propped up in bed, a loud sigh escaped through her lips as she thought about her present plight. It was Sunday noon, the day after Jax had found her on the deck. An ambulance had once again taken her to the hospital, where Dr Carson assured her the baby was fine. That was the good news. The final diagnosis: if Chelsea wanted to keep this baby until her scheduled delivery date, she’d have to stay in bed permanently. S
