Kristen “Mommy! Mommy, are you okay?” Joy jumped down from the tree and landed lightly on the balls of her feet beside me like she was part monkey. I was still lying on my back on the ground, and her little head and worried frown loomed above me. “I was so scared, Mommy! I thought those ugly dogs were going to bite you!” I slowly sat up. I could feel the dampness of the spring earth seeping through my jeans. I wasn’t going to tell Joy that I was just as terrified. “Yeah, I’m okay,” I said, brushing dirt and debris off the heels of my hands. Except I wasn’t really okay.
