2 - Letter From King Nicholas

Angelica’s POV “This isn’t my name anymore” I whispered to Aston, giving back the envelope. “I’m Angelica Leigh Oscar now.” Aston shook his head, placing the envelope on the table in front of me. “It is your name. It will always be your name. Oscar is what they gave you and if you use it for anything official, it won’t work” he murmurs and I look up at him through the tears in my eyes. I didn’t know that. “Read it, you will be happy to know what’s inside.” I looked down at the envelope nervously and ran my fingertips over the printed name on the front before turning it over and opening the seal and pulling out the sheets of paper inside. The very first piece was a long-handwritten letter: ‘Dear Angelica, The first day I met you, you were less than a day old. I was sent to the dragon kingdom to retrieve you for your grandmother because your mother chose to stay at the brothel she was working at, instead of raising you. You were so little, but the one thing I knew, you were a fighter with your fiery auburn hair. That turned out to be true on your first day of school when my sons told me, another little girl a few years older than yourself, tried to pinch you. You stood up to her and told her if she were to do it again, you would punch her in the nose. She did, and you did.’ I stopped reading as I remember the day he was talking about. I didn’t know anybody saw what had happened, let alone the triplet princes, that were in my class. My grandmother told me to never let anyone bully you and to tell them to stop. If they didn’t, then I was allowed to defend myself. How things have changed and I start to frown at the irony as I continue to read: ‘Although she did love you when I took you on the first day, things changed because the second time I met you, you were 8 and you were sent to the dragon kingdom to spend some time with your biological mother, Molly. She had wanted to keep you there and we were asked to go and make sure she was keeping you for the right reasons. She had found her second chance mate; Alpha Simeon Oscar from the Blood Moon Pack and I was sent to ensure everything was what it seemed. You see, there is something about the werewolf royalty we only share with our most trusted and loyal members. Something Simeon and Molly are not. I want to share this with you and hope you can keep our secret; we can read minds. A gift given to us from my great, great, grandmother who was a wolf/witch hybrid. When I came that day, you were happy and wanted to stay, and I couldn’t send you home to your grandmother, something I regret because I knew the only reason Simeon and Molly wanted you was because of the inheritance you would receive when you reached the age of 18.’ “Inheritance?” I whispered to myself as Aston looked up from his recliner he was sitting in. “What inheritance?” “Keep reading” he said, a small smile crossing his face. Does he know what’s in the letter? “King Nicholas told me he explained everything in a letter.” I gave him a nod and looked down at the letter to keep reading. ‘You may be wondering what inheritance I am talking about? It’s a long story, one I hope will give you a better understanding of the events that happened over the years. When my mother met my father, my father was in a physical relationship with your mother. He had ended the relationship and your mother and her father didn’t take too kindly to it. So much so, my mother was kidn*pped and sent away by your grandfather. He was tried and killed for his part and your mother was banished from the Kingdom Pack.’ ‘Your grandfather, Lord Alister Salisbury had left a large fortune to your mother on his death. Regardless of the circumstances behind his death, your grandmother was given power of attorney over his small fortune. This is where the story gets a lot of twists and turns, especially regarding your grandmother and I would like her to talk to you about that. Anyway, your mother ended up in the hands of a vampire and a dark witch. They wanted to produce babies to feed a demigod, your soul, but we as a kingdom were able to defeat them. At the time, we were unaware your mother was already pregnant and when we found out, she asked for her inheritance. Your grandmother had learned a lot about your mother from other pack members and was worried, Molly didn’t care about you as she claimed and, as power of attorney, placed the inheritance in your name. If Molly wanted the money, she would have to prove herself. She decided to give you to your grandmother and stay at the brothel, as per her… Well, there’s no other word to call him; pimp’s request.’ That explains the inheritance, it doesn’t explain the sudden change in attitude towards me. If she wants the money so badly, why treat me like a piece of s**t that she picked up on the bottom of her shoe? I continue reading; ‘From there, your mother found your stepfather. She left the brothel, and we’ve already been over what I discovered in their thoughts. I had come home in the hopes of finding a way for them to continue to treat you well without doing their scheme to have you mate with Simeon’s son, Connor, when you turned 18 to get the inheritance.’ “What?” I shouted, glaring at the last line I just read, my breathing becoming more rapid, “They wanted me to mate with that f*****g asshole?” I got up from the table, picking up the letter and ready to run to Simeon and Molly to confront them before I had another anxiety attack as Aston jumped up from his chair. “Don’t Angie” he said as I narrowed my eyes at him. He has never called me that before, only Casey calls me that. “You need to finish reading the letter. It explains why I am here. Why I need to take you back to the werewolf kingdom.” “What?” I whispered, calming down with shock at what he had just said. He gave me a smile, nudging his head towards the letter in my hand, and I sat down again. ‘I spoke with your grandmother and between the two of us, we amended the terms of your inheritance. You could get the inheritance after you find your fated mate, but until then it will remain out of reach. We had let Simeon know when you turned 12. I later found out, the tides had turned, and they were no longer treating you the way they should be. I knew I had to step in again. This time, I spoke with Alpha Mitchell Olsen of the Yellowstone pack.’ Why does this name sound familiar? ‘Your mother believed he was your father, because the dark witch forced her to go into heat when he came to visit.’ That’s why his name is familiar. Mum did tell me he was my father and I think his name is on my birth certificate. ‘This is not true; Mitchell didn’t have s*x with your mother at that time.’ Huh? ‘He had some unmated warriors sleep with her and one of them fathered you. With your description I gave them, we found your father. He wanted proof by taking a DNA test. I had a family member sneak in a hair sample without your knowledge; sorry for the intrusion. But we had to make sure Aston was indeed your father.’ What the hell? Aston? “You’re my father?” I asked, Aston’s face going pink at the question. “Why didn’t you tell me?” “I wanted to, but part of the deal was I wasn’t allowed” he murmured as I glanced at Casey, who had the same expression on her face as I had on mine. “It was before I met your mother. Alpha Mitchell needed to accept Molly’s rejection and her being in heat; he needed to get some of us to sleep with her to bring it to an end quicker.” “Some of us? How many were there?” I asked, still shocked at what I was reading. My mother was nothing but a slut from what I can see. “And what do you mean, except her rejection?” “Three. That’s why I wanted proof. Queen Harmony, being a dragon royal before she became the werewolf queen, had a family member visit. They took a hair sample, and it was a positive match”, He explains, a small tear escaping my eyes. My father has been here the whole time, trying to protect me. “To answer your other question, Alpha Mitchell was her mate and she rejected him because she wanted to mate with the former werewolf king. He couldn’t accept the rejection because he couldn’t find her and the moment he did, well…” I glanced back to the letter; ‘We told Aston what had been happening, and he went into a rampage. He had already lost his mate to an abusive father; he wasn’t going to lose his older daughter to an abusive mother and stepfather. He asked Alpha Mitchell if he was able to move packs to protect you. I put my own twist on it, as you may already know; he is there under special request from me and, due to his personal trauma, he is not to be harmed in any way, or there will be severe consequences.’ “Can I ask? What happened to your mate?” I turned to look into Aston’s deep brown eyes, knowing they are my own now. “She went to visit her mother in the hospital. Her father was abusive and would beat the pair of them. That’s why she was in the hospital. When she arrived, he was there. She tried to call for assistance, and before she could, he shifted, killing her and her mother”, Aston said; tears escaping my eyes at the brutality of some people. I never really thought about it before because I never thought Simeon, Mum or Connor would actually kill me. This could be a very strong possibility. “It happened a long time ago, and I still regret not going with her on that day. A regret I don’t want to repeat. Casey was a little pup when it happened, and it’s been her and I for a very long time.” “And now you too” Casey said, beaming a smile; trying to hide the fact she was crying too. I gave her a small smile and continued reading the letter. I’m almost done; ‘Now you know the truth about Aston, I want to apologize why you were never told. It was to protect you. If Simeon or Molly knew who he was, they would have done something to not only you, but to him and Casey. I couldn’t have that on my conscious. I asked him to keep it quiet until the time is right. And that time is now. You will be graduating soon and I have investigated your school results. You are a very bright young lady and I want to offer you a full scholarship to the United Strength University in the Werewolf Kingdom.’ Huh? He’s offering me a way out of here? I reread the last paragraph to make sure I wasn’t imagining it. ‘Enclosed I have your admission papers and necessary documentation you will need. All I need is your answer. Tell Aston and he will let me know. If you agree, I will come for you the day of your graduation. I shouldn’t have to remind you. Don’t disclose this information to anyone for your own safety. Sincerely King Nicholas Jackman. I pushed the letter to the side and glanced at the admission papers. Everything is filled out; I just need to let them know what major I want to do and sign it. I glance through my options; Fashion, definitely not. That’s Casey, not me. Culinary; I like food when I’m allowed to eat it, but hate cooking. It reminds me too much of the bat from hell. Art? I was good at that in class, but is it something I want to achieve? I’m good at math; accountant, maybe? Business? Hmm, what is this about conflict negotiation? That sounds interesting? I can relate to clients with psychology but have my own bullshit to deal with. “You don’t have to choose now” Casey said, coming over to see what I was looking at. “I’ve been offered a position there too. I wasn’t going to accept because I knew you wouldn’t be able to go. Now I can, we can look at it tomorrow. You aren’t going back to the packhouse any time soon.” “Ever” I said, smiling down at the letter again. “He said he would have someone come and get me on the day of my graduation. That’s tomorrow. I won’t be going back ever.” I look up at her, tears forming in my eyes again. “Let’s get some sleep and work out what you want to do tomorrow”, she tells me again as I nod, and we head to her bedroom.
