Reece’s POV
Isaiah and I helped everyone through the portal Caleb opened, before we headed through ourselves. As soon as it shut behind us, Isaiah let off a growl that shook the walls of dad’s office. I hadn’t even noticed Angelica was being held up by Caleb. “What the f**k happened?” Isaiah screamed, taking huge steps towards Caleb and gently lifting Angelica into his arms.
“That’s your cue to get over there” Damian said, and I rolled my eyes, not arguing, as I moved forward to stand with my brothers and mate.
“She just passed out when we came through the portal” Caleb explained, picking up Angelica’s hand and giving it a kiss.
“Is there something you need to discuss with me, sons?” Dad asked, raising an eyebrow in our direction.
“No”, the three of us answered in unison. There was no need to discuss it, he knew exactly what was going on, even if the others didn’t. ‘Not true, Aston knows. Isaiah asked him if there was a reason she wouldn’t be able to feel a mate bond.’ Caleb projects his thought to me.
I forgot about that. “Are you sure?” Dad asked, now nodding at the additional people in his office.
“Oh, that. They denounced Simeon and the pack and asked for asylum”, Caleb answered, not taking his concerned gaze from Angelica’s limp body.
“Ask Blair if he knew about the wolfsbane in her system”, Damian said as I stood up straight, turning my glare to the former gamma.
“Do you know if they were poisoning her with wolfsbane?” I asked him as he looked between Courtney, Aston and Renee.
“We suspected it” Courtney said, letting out a long breath; tears starting to swell in her eyes. “When she turned 16 and her wolf hadn’t arrived, Blair and I suspected something wasn’t right.”
“Aston, Renee, Courtney and I tried to get proof they were giving her wolfsbane, but we could never find it” Blair continued the explanation as dad smiled at the man. Am I missing something here? He was the gamma of the pack, wasn’t he against Angelica?
“I should explain” Dad said, turning to face me. “Blair was the one to come to me in the first place about what was happening to Angelica. Apparently, Dad knew Courtney; they went to school together. Blair and Courtney weren’t happy when they started treating Angelica poorly. Blair and Courtney were the only ones who knew who Aston was to Angelica.”
“I know too,” Renee said, giving us a knowing smile at our closeness to our mate. “You can’t be in a committed relationship without giving up some of your secrets.”
“The pair of you…” “Are mates, yes” Aston said, cutting Casey off. He pulled his daughter into his embrace, kissing the top of her head. “We are second-chance mates. It was a shock to me as much as it was to Renee.”
“Sorry to spring it on you like this, Casey” Renee said, giving her a gentle tap on the shoulder. “We kept it secret for obvious reasons. I would have preferred it to be under different circumstances.”
“You needed to se… Oh, OK” Uncle Aiden said, walking into Dad’s office.
“Aiden will take you to your room. You are welcome to stay here until you can find somewhere to live”, Dad tells everyone as Blair ushers his family out of the doorway.
“No. I need to be with Angie”, Casey yelled before her eyes glazed over as her father mind linked her. “Fine, but the moment she is awake, you have to tell me” she included, pointing to the three of us, surrounding Angelica. I nodded to her before she walked out the door.
“We need to get her to the hospital. Hopefully Grace can tell us what’s going on”, Isaiah said, taking a few steps towards the doorway. ‘Dumbass, I’ll just open a portal’. Caleb’s thought came into our minds. “Hurry up then.”
“Aston, Renee, I know you want to go with them. I need to have a chat with you” Dad told them as they nodded, taking a seat on one of the sofas. “I’ll send you to the hospital as soon as we are done.”
Caleb opened the portal, and we stepped through to Grace’s office. “f**k” she jumped at us, appearing in front of her. “Do you boys have to do this, every time?”
Grace is a werewolf doctor who went to university with Aunty Indyleigh. Although Aunty Indy was finishing her high school diploma with Aunty Gemma and Aunty Joslyn, she became friends with Grace on their first day, and it’s been that way since. “No time to talk. You need to help her” Isaish said, placing Angelica down on the examination table.
“She just passed out when we got back from the dragon kingdom” Caleb elaborated, refusing to let go of her hand.
“Did you go via a portal?” Grace asked, and we all nodded our heads as she put her stethoscope in her ears to listen to Angelica’s breathing. “Has she been via a portal before?”
“Not since she was a baby” I murmured, trying to remember what Dad told me about her life. “I don’t think she passed out then. It would be on her record, Angelica Newton.”
“Oh, this is the famous Angelica” Grace said, trying to hide the smile behind her stethoscope. “Your Aunty Gemma has spoken to me about some of her premonitions” she continued as I looked at Caleb, who nodded, telling me she was answering a question he asked her. “Her vitals are strong. Can you tell me anything else about what’s going on?”
“She may have been poisoned with wolfbane to stop her wolf from surfacing” I told her.
Grace’s eyes bulged open; “You should have told me. No wonder she passed out. If she has wolfsbane in her system, her body is weakened and going through a portal can be more stressful on her body. Do you know how long she’s had it in her system?”
“It’s only an assumption at the moment. Two years, give or take a few months”, Caleb said, the concern he had in his eyes was evident in all three of us. “She doesn’t have her wolf yet.”
“She doesn’t have her wolf?” Grace asked as we all nodded in her direction. “Are you going to tell her who you are, or do you want to wait until her wolf comes?”
“Wait” we all said together. It was something we agreed upon years ago. If we knew who our mate was, like some of our family members, we would wait until they found out for themselves. Most of our family do find out earlier because of our special gifts. Caleb even agreed not to tell Isaiah and me if he found out earlier. Luckily for us, he didn’t know.
“Or so I told you” he said, grinning from ear to ear. I rolled my eyes at him; he didn’t know.
“It’s not up to me to give you the no means no lecture. In this case, I think I need to” Grace said, sitting down at her computer to type Angelica’s vitals on it. “I’m going to run some tests to make sure the prolonged wolfsbane hasn’t caused any more damage than it already has. In the meantime, I suggest she doesn’t travel via portal until we know it’s safe.”
“We don’t…” “We know” I snarled, cutting Caleb off.
“Even when the wolfsbane is out of her system, we won’t know how long it will take for Angelica to get her wolf. She could get her instantly; it could take years. If you are going to wait, it may be a bit overwhelming for her to have three royal princes chasing after her”, Grace explains as I flopped down on the seat next to her desk. “Especially if she hasn’t had a boyfriend before. Has she had a boyfriend before?”
I bit my tongue to stop the growl Damian was making in my head. Looking over at Isaiah and Caleb; they were trying to stop the green-eyed monster too. “That being said; I take it the three of you have broken off your relationship with your girlfriends?”
“s**t!” we all said together. Since going to the Blood Moon Pack, I haven’t once thought about Bernadette. ‘I believe this is what they mean by; when you meet your mate, no-one else matters’, Caleb said in my mind.
“I suggest you end your relationships. There is nothing worse than your mate seeing you with your girlfriends, even if they don’t know about it. When they find out and realize you knew, it will come back and bite you in the ass” Grace said, as I slumped further into my chair. Why is this chair so small? I want to hide in my own frustration.
“How do we pursue a relationship with her, without causing her anxiety and stress?” Isaiah asked, his eyes never leaving Angelica’s sleeping frame. “I mean, I know how to take things slow. But it’s going to be hard because Archie wants me to be near her all the time.”
“That’s up to what she wants from each of you” Grace said with a shrug of the shoulders, turning back to the computer to finish typing in her notes. “It’s important for each of you to be close to her and her to you. In fact, I suggest you stay close to her, it will help her get her wolf. But do everything at her pace, not yours.”
“Understood” I said, getting out of my chair to head for the door.
“Where are you going?” Isaiah asked, not moving a single centimeter.
“To go tell Berny, we are no longer an item. I don’t want to prolong it any more than I have to” I answered, walking out of the hospital and heading to her place to do the inevitable.
