Prologue
Tiselle
“Congratulations!” I hummed while hugging my sister.
After pulling away, I stood there and admired Giselle. She is such a beauty. Inside and out. But especially today.
Giselle had just exchanged vows and the reception was beginning. Her light auburn hair was pulled up into an elegant bun with tendrils spiraling down sporadically. There was an abundance of love and joy sparkling in her turquoise eyes, and her full lips stretched across her face to form a perfect smile.
The wedding dress she was wearing hugged her frame perfectly and showed off every one of her assets. If only we had the same assets, maybe I would have found love by now.
Giselle must have felt my flash of emotional pain, because I was suddenly engulfed by her arms again. As she hugged me, she insisted, “Tiselle, you are just as beautiful. You must know this, right?”
“Yeah, I guess so,” I mumbled, not wanting to bring Giselle down on her special day.
“Damn right, you are! Now, get your fine ass out there on the dance floor and have some fun tonight!” she demanded with the best of intentions.
I smiled at my twin sister and gave her one more quick hug before mumbling, “Fine, but you better not take off to Florida without telling me goodbye.”
“I would never leave without saying bye to you,” she insisted before pecking a kiss on my cheek.
I watched my twin sister walk to her husband, wishing she didn’t have to move away to be with the man of her dreams. Sure, we had been separated a few times throughout our childhood, but this was going to be a permanent separation, and I wasn’t happy about it.
Pushing those thoughts and feelings to the side, I took my sister’s advice and danced the night away. When it came time for the goodbyes, I did my best to keep a straight face and only allowed a few tears to slip, then I watched Giselle leave with her husband, Kayden.
With her went a little piece of my heart.
Sleep was evasive that night, and I was happy to get up the next morning when the alarm sounded. It didn’t matter that I hadn’t gotten much sleep. What mattered was that I busied myself with something to keep from falling into a depression.
I left the house that morning and headed to work. My job wasn’t great, but it paid the bills. I was about 20 feet away from the city bus stop when I saw a semi-truck slam into a SUV, sending the vehicle rolling.
Taking off in a sprint, I ran to their aid without thought. It took every bit of the strength I had to pull three of the men out of the burning vehicle, but I wasn’t able to help the driver. Unfortunately, his door was jammed from where that front corner took the blunt of the hit.
I was yanking as hard as I could when the SUV suddenly exploded, sending me flying backwards into the forest behind us. Unconscious, I laid there for an unknown amount of time.
When I regained consciousness, the accident had been cleaned up, and the sun was making its descent from the sky. My head was throbbing, and I couldn’t think straight, so I instinctively made my way back home. The second I reached my bedroom, I fell front first onto the bed and immediately found myself back in another deep sleep.
When I woke up the next morning, I still had a bad headache, but no recollection of the day before. If not for the wounds littering my body, I would have assumed I had simply slept the entire day away.
So there I was worried about whether I still had a job or not; whether I would be able to pay my rent or not; and what happened to cause all of these burns, scratches and bruises.
The main concern though, was that I couldn’t afford to lose my job.
No way would I go back to living on the streets.
No way. No how.

“I will be there in twenty minutes,” I informed Stefan before ending the call. “Carter, I need to stop at our store on 9th street. Apparently Abigail is having problems with the new system.”
“Are you sure there is enough time for that?” Lydan asked, looking quite anxious.
“There has to be,” I answered.
Just as I was getting ready to say more, everything went to hell. There was the sound of metal crunching and glass breaking mixed with screams, followed by glass shards flying all over the place. Simultaneously, I felt a major jolt to the vehicle that caused us to start flipping uncontrollably…
Screaming. That is what I woke up to, but I couldn’t open my eyes to see what was happening. My eyelids felt so damn heavy, and my head was pounding. My body felt like it had been beaten to a pulp, and I could feel a thick liquid running down the side of my face.
Hands. Small delicate hands. I could feel them, as they pulled me out of the wreckage.
“There you go, sir. Help will be here soon.” I heard a soft voice say.
More rustling. More shuffling. The same words spoken by the same voice.
By now, I had managed to slightly open my eyes, but everything was so blurry, I could hardly make anything out at first.
Even more rustling and shuffling. Then again… those same words. That same melodic voice.
Just as my vision was starting to clear, an angel came into my sight. I wasn’t sure about much from that day, but one thing was certain: she had auburn hair and what appeared to be a bell with a bird tattooed on her shoulder.
Before I could see more, she ran to the other side of the Suburban. I could hear her mumbling something, but I couldn’t make out her words, then it happened.
Boom!
The Suburban that I had just been pulled out of exploded! All I could do was hope the angel who saved me didn’t get hurt in the explosion. That was the last thought I had as I slipped back into a state of unconsciousness.
