*There it was.*
The reason they had come all this way. They wanted me to move out. Vince had filled their heads against me. My eyes had gone foggy, and tears were threatening to spill out. I was holding the counter so tightly my knuckles had gone white.
“I’m sorry, but no, Rosy will not be moving out. What the hell has Vince told you? None of this is Rosy’s fault, Dad. Vince was the only one who forced himself on her. We all witnessed it!” Taylor was loud and angry.
“Hunny, we are not blaming Rosy for anything. We just think that Rosy needs to learn to live without you. What’s going to happen once you and Rocky move in together? Don’t you think that she should get a head start instead of waiting for this bad news later?” Mrs Callum said, and she had a point.
But we all knew that that wasn’t the reason they had made such a decision.
“Well, if you must know, Rocky and I are still pleased with our arrangement. We are in no rush to move in together. Besides, if we did, Rosy would still stay with us. We love her just as much as she loves us. We won’t just ditch her!”
“Really, Taylor?! You're going to live with her for the rest of your life? Like, come on, what will people say?! What will our reputation come to once her little world opens up in society?” Mrs Callum spat at Taylor.
I closed my eyes and let the tears spill out. My world was crumbling before me. They were talking about my life like they knew what it felt like to live it.
“What the f**k, mom?! Seriously, are you trying to say all this is Rosy’s fault?? She didn’t choose this life. She didn’t get a say in it. All she wants is to move on and forget that there’s a part of her life that disgusts people. You guys called her your daughter, and this is what you're doing to her?” Taylor was yelling now.
“We didn’t know Taylor! You never thought it was important for us to know her background. You think anyone will accept her knowing that she’s a bastard?! I mean, come on, even Blake wouldn’t want her part of his company after he finds out,” Mr Callum yelled back, and my eyes flew open.
No! Not my career, this couldn’t ruin my career. I looked at Blake, and he was already staring at me. His face was pained, and his jaw clenched. He must have seen the pain and worry on my face as well.
“Sorry, Mr and Mrs Callum, but I’m not as shallow as you guys. My employees' past is none of my business. All I care about is how she performs and that she’s focused on her job.” Blake didn’t even look at them. He kept staring at me while he replied to them.
He had a little smile on his face, and I couldn’t believe he was saying that without knowing what they were talking about.
“Well, Blake, maybe we aren’t shallow, but we’ve made our decision. Taylor, either Rosy moves out or we're cutting you off,” Mr Callum said and crossed his arms.
“Dad, you can’t do that! Where is she gonna go?!” Taylor yelled.
“I don’t care where she goes, Taylor. I’ve made my decision. This is my apartment, I paid for it, and you either do as I ask or you too can go find somewhere else to stay.”
Their argument carried on. Mr. and Mrs. Callum kept threatening Taylor, and she kept defending me. I just stood there crying, not being able to believe how one decision I made changed everything. I kept telling myself that if things between Vince and me went wrong, I would lose everything, and that’s exactly what happened.
I felt two hands on my shoulder. When I looked up, Rocky was standing behind me.
“You can come stay with me Rosy,” he said softly. Before I could say anything, Mr Callum jumped in.
“Don’t you dare, Rocky. You will not take her side either. If you want to keep this relationship with my daughter, you too will stay away from Rosy.”
“With all due respect, Mr Callum, you are not my father. You will not tell me what I can and can not do. I know for a fact that your daughter would want me to give her friend a roof over her head.” he had one arm wrapped around my shoulder, and I was grateful because I needed the support to keep standing now.
“Well then, Rocky, looks like Taylor and you are done now, too.”
“Sto,p please! Everyone, just stop!” I shouted. I had had enough. I wasn’t going to be the reason for any relationships falling apart.
“I’ll find myself a place. No one has to go against anyone. I’ve outlived my welcome in this family, and it’s time for me to move on. Taylor, I love you, but please just do as they want you to. I’m a big girl and I’ll figure it out.” I didn’t stop to listen to a response from anyone. I ran to my room and went straight for the closet to find a bag.
I grabbed a suitcase and started stuffing it with my clothes and essentials. I grabbed whatever I could and changed my clothes. I had enough money saved up to find a place. I wasn’t leeching off Taylor; I lived with her because she was my best friend. I didn’t know a life without her, but right now I just wanted to get out of here.
I stuffed the suitcase as much as I could and closed it. I packed my laptop in my laptop bag and stuffed my handbag with the little things I needed from my nightstand. I didn’t realise how much I’d packed until I went to pick up the bag, and my weak arms couldn’t even lift it. I tugged on the bag and pulled as hard as I could. The bag moved and tipped over, falling onto the floor, pulling me down with it. I was so frustrated, and this was tipping me over. My tears just wouldn’t stop. I couldn’t even see properly. I pulled my knees up to my chest and hugged them.
I felt a presence behind me. I turned, and Blake stood at the doorway. He saw my position and quickly walked over to me.
“Are you okay, Rose?!” He helped me up and picked up the bag. I just shook my head and clutched onto my handbag.
“You're coming with me. I’ve got a spare room you can stay in until we figure something out.” He said and picked up my suitcase again and wrapped his arm around my shoulder, towing me with him.
I had just lost my voice. My mind had gone blank, and I just wanted to roll up in a ball and cry. We walked back out to the living area, and Taylor was wrapped up in Rocky’s arm, crying. Mr and Mrs Callum were sitting on the couch having a conversation.
“Rocky, do you mind helping me move Rosy’s stuff into my spare room? Especially the bed. I’ve got an empty room for her, just no furniture.” He asked, and Rocky nodded his head.
“I’ll help you pack up her stuff.” Taylor’s voice was cracking as she tried to talk.
“Thank you. I’ll be back.” Blake replied and started towing me towards his apartment.
We got to the door of his apartment, and he let go of me to open the door. He walked in first, and I slowly followed him in.
“Are you sure you want me here, Blake?” I finally found my voice. My throat was so dry I was croaking.
“Yes, I’m sure. This way, you can still stay close to Taylor and Rocky as well,” he said, placing my bag next to his couch. “You sit here. I’ll go get your stuff, and we can set it up in the spare room.” He walked out of the apartment, and I sank into the couch closest to me.
I really didn’t think this would happen. I thought that they would at least ask me for my side of the story and try to at least reason with me. But they kicked me out. They were family, how could they do this to me?
I was lost in my thoughts when I saw Rocky walk in with my nightstand. He had one, and Blake had the other. Behind them was Taylor, who was carrying stuff from my dresser and my bedside lamps.
They slowly moved all my stuff in one at a time. Taylor was setting it up in Blake’s spare room, and I finally got off the couch and went to help her. My body felt weak and I could barely stand up properly. Once the dresser and my bed were in, I quickly made the bed again and sat on it. My tears were coming in waves. Every time I thought about what was happening, they just started to spill out.
Taylor walked in with a basket full of my clothes that she must have taken from my walk-in closet. She placed the basket in front of the closet and walked over to me. She knelt in front of me.
“I’m so so so sorry about this, Rosy. I never thought mum and dad would do something like this,” she said and held my hands tightly with hers.
Fresh tears formed in my eyes, and I was trying to keep them in.
“It’s not your fault. What kind of parent would want someone like me around their children? I’m not saying they are wrong, I’m just saying that I understand. They have a reputation to protect. You think Blake’s parents would be happy to know I’m in here? I have to find a place ASAP. Don’t think I can handle another kicking out,” I replied and looked at our intertwined fingers.
“Fortunately for you, my parents don’t get a say about who I live with. It’s my money and I do as I please,” Blake said loudly as he and Rocky leaned on the door frame. “You can stay here as long as you need. No one will kick you out.”
“See if I hadn’t relied on my parents so much, I wouldn’t be seeing this day,” Taylor said, and tears formed in her eyes, too.
“We knew this day would come, Tay. How long was I going to keep lying?” I asked her.
“Can someone please tell me what is going on? What is this all about?” Blake asked and looked at Rocky. Rocky shook his head at Blake and looked back at me.
“Tell him, Rosy. I think he now deserves to know,” Rocky said, and his eyes held pain. He was upset, but he wasn’t someone to have outbursts or meltdowns.
I looked at Taylor, and she nodded her head, agreeing with Rocky.
“Okay then. You want to go on a road trip with me, Blake? I’ll show you what this is about,” I asked, and he nodded.
