Prologue
Everything was heightened terror, confusion, and anger. I didn’t know what was going on. Everyone was running around like chickens with their heads cut off. Omegas, pregnant she-wolves, kids, and the elderly were running towards the bunker while our warriors, or what was left of them, were fighting a mix of rouges and members of another pack. We were outnumbered by a lot. Christine, my family’s omega, ran towards me and scooped me up in her arms and ran towards the bunker. I looked around for my parents but I couldn’t find them anywhere. I started crying.
“Where are my parents?” I breathed through the tear. “I need my mommy and daddy, where are they?”
“They are on the battlefield, sweetie” Christine cooed trying not to make me worry any further,
I squirmed in her arms trying to get out but she just tightens her grip. Everyone trains in our pack including the omegas. The warriors were trained sperate and females trained as warriors as well unlike other packs who believed that females had no business fighting alongside the men. I continue to squirm until finally I’m dropped to the ground. I heard Christine scream and took that as a chance to run. I ran outside to find it worse than the packhouse. Dead bodies and wounded warriors everywhere and from what I saw the majority of the warriors were ours, we were losing.
Before I could scream a hand covered my mouth while the other arm picked me up and swung me around to face him. It was my mommy and daddy. I clung to my daddy tight as I could as he ran back inside the packhouse and up the stairs to their room. I couldn’t help but look around as my pack was being mercilessly slaughtered. The rouges and other pack had made it down to the bunker where I was sure they were all dead. They may know how to defend themselves but they had no chance against trained warriors. Even though I wasn’t the Alpha nor have I shifted yet, I still felt the bond of the pack breaking with each pack member that they killed.
“Alright pumpkin,” my daddy said softly as he sat me down in the back of their walk-in closet. “We need you to be brave.”
“We love you, sweetheart,” my mother cooed as she handed me a family heirloom that has been passed down from mother to daughter for generations. It was supposed to be given to the eldest daughter when she finds her mate but her giving this to me now told me that she wasn’t going to live to see me find my mate. It was her family crest, a dark purple wolf howling towards the moon, on a white oval pearl in a gold frame hanging from a long gold chain. As mommy put the chain around my neck, she kissed my forehead. I looked up at her tears running down my face.
“Mommy please don’t go,” I begged I couldn’t lose them they were all I had. “I need you.”
“Pumpkin what have I always told you?” Daddy questioned.
“We will always be together and I will always have you in my heart no matter what,” I answered through hiccups. Before I could say anything else the bedroom burst open and there stood Alpha Kade, alpha of the Vengeance Pack.
I quickly threw myself to the very back of the closet hiding in a little cupboard as my parents quickly shut and locked the walk-in closet. I heard the sound of fighting and things breaking as my parents fought the greedy bastard. Even at the young age of ten I still heard rumours and stories of Alpha Kade being the most ruthless alpha next to the Alpha king, who had the strongest pack. Rumour has it that Alpha Kade wanted to be the Alpha King and wanted to be the strongest pack so he would destroy any pack stronger than him by pretending to be their ally then striking when they least expect. From what I know we were never their ally which is why he must have partnered up with the rouges.
Before I knew it the fighting has stopped and everything was silent. Eerily silent. It seemed like hours went by before I heard the knob start jiggling on the closet door as someone was trying to get in. I covered my ears and shut my eyes wanting this nightmare to be over. The door finally cracked open and heavy footsteps walked in and someone started sniffing the air. I shrieked when the cupboard door came flying off its hinges and crashed on the wall behind him and I was staring into these emotionless green eyes. I shrunk back as far as I could, not like that was possible, and sniffled as I held on to my mother’s pendant hanging around my neck.
The green eyes softened as he held out his hand for me to take. I was hesitant at first but then took it. Everything I knew was gone. Everyone I knew and cared for was wiped away from existence. I sniffled again as he helped me out and pulled me to my feet. Then, I did the one thing I knew I shouldn’t have done. I looked to my right. Laying there in front of the broken door were my parents. Mutilated and unrecognizable but I knew who they were. I let out an ear-piercing scream that shook the pack house. The pain was too great, I couldn’t bear it. I had lost my parents and my entire pack in one night. Turns out that the one who found me was the betas son and had somehow convinced Alpha Kade to take me in. I thought my nightmare was over after that horrific night but I was dead wrong. Unfortunately, my nightmare had just begun.
