Chapter 3 “Tell me a little bit about your daughter,” I said to Gus as he took a seat on the leather couch in my living room. I brought a cup of chamomile tea over to him and he looked down at the cup for a moment. He watched the water swirl into eddies, evaporate into the air, and dance on the wind until it disappeared into the ether. He bit his lip as the tears formed in the corners of his eyes. I grabbed a box of tissues from the coffee table and handed them to him. “It’s okay.” “I’m sorry,” he said, dabbing his eyes with a tissue. “I just . . . never thought it would happen to me, you know.” “Well,” I replied, “we’re not quite sure what happened to you, are we?” He sniffled. “I suppose you’re right.
