IN THE PAST EIGHT YEARS, I’d learned how to dim my wings, so they made only the slightest glow when I pressed them out flat. Flapping them lightly, I peeked over the wall to make sure there were no guards looking my way before hovering over it and dropping into the bushes on the other side. I stowed my wings when I landed. Even though they weren’t bright, they gave off too much light in the darkness of the yard. “Area four clear!” one of the guards spoke into a walkie-talkie. “Over.” The guard passed in front of me and continued to walk in the other direction.
