Chapter 5 – A Heart Divided
Their romance burned like wildfire—fast, consuming, impossible to control. Elena had never felt more alive. Every touch from Adrian set her alight, every glance held promises that made her ache. Yet beneath it all, the shadows grew darker.
One evening, she followed him. She hadn’t planned it, but when Adrian left their dinner abruptly after a phone call, something inside her snapped. She needed answers.
She trailed him across town until he entered a tall glass building. The lobby sign revealed it was the headquarters of a powerful investment firm—not unusual, except Adrian had told her he was in “imports and exports.”
Confusion churned into dread. Why had he lied?
She waited outside for nearly an hour before he emerged, his jaw tight, his stride sharp. She ducked back into the shadows, heart pounding.
The next day, she confronted him.
“Imports and exports?” she demanded. “That’s what you do?”
Adrian’s eyes narrowed, his silence deafening.
“Don’t lie to me, Adrian. Please.”
Finally, he exhaled. “I didn’t want you involved in this. My business… it isn’t clean, Elena. Not always.”
Her chest constricted. “What are you saying?”
“I can’t tell you everything. But if you stay… if you choose me… you need to understand that my world isn’t safe.”
Elena’s heart split in two. She loved him—desperately—but fear wrapped around her like chains. Could she step into his shadows and survive?
When he reached for her hand, she hesitated for the first time.
