The Baptism of Gold

1047 Words
The outer valley gates of Mount Vane did not break easily, but when the Blood Fang Pack’s heavy siege mortars struck for the third time, the reinforced steel buckled with a deafening, metallic scream. The lower forcefield flickered, sparked violently, and died, letting the thick morning fog rush into the perimeter like an encroaching shroud. Through that fog came the vanguard—hundreds of rabid, massive wolves berating forward, their claws scraping against the wet stone as they roared for blood. From the top of the three-story stone battlements, Elena looked down at the unfolding chaos. The sheer scale of the violence below was staggering. Elite Silver Moon warriors, completely shifted into their giant Lycan forms, clashed violently with the invaders in a brutal sea of fur, teeth, and tearing flesh. The metallic tang of blood rose quickly through the air, mixing with the sharp smell of sulfur and gunpowder. "Hold the line!" Januar’s voice boomed over the tactical comm-system, his heavy machine gun barking from a fortified bunker to the left, chewing through the front ranks of the Blood Fang attackers. Beside Elena, Kaelen stood at the center of the primary defense platform. His black combat armor was already splattered with dark crimson. He hadn't shifted completely, choosing to maintain his bipedal form to wield a massive, dual-bladed obsidian broadsword, but his face was entirely monstrous. His jaw was elongated, his chest heaving, and his eyes were two burning suns of liquid gold. Every sweep of his blade cut down multiple enemy wolves, his raw, oppressive Alpha aura keeping the invaders from completely overwhelming the gate. But the sheer numbers of the Blood Fang Pack were staggering. Alpha Boris had sent his entire vanguard to die just to wear Kaelen’s forces down. "Alpha!" a comm-operator shouted from the lower deck, his voice crackling with static and panic. "Rogue hunters have infiltrated our eastern flank! They brought weaponized silver-gas cannisters! Our front-line warriors are collapsing—they're paralyzed!" Elena’s eyes snapped to the eastern ridge. A thick, glowing cloud of metallic green gas was rolling across a defensive trench, suffocating twenty Silver Moon warriors. They fell to their knees, coughing up dark blood as the silver gas corroded their lungs. A group of Blood Fang wolves immediately rushed forward to s*******r the defenseless fighters. "Kaelen, look!" Elena cried out, her hand instinctively tightening around the obsidian dagger in her belt. "If that gas hits the main gate, your front line will shatter!" Kaelen glanced at the trench, his jaw tightening into a fierce snarl. "Januar! Re-route the ventilation fans! Blow that gas back!" "The lines are severed, Alpha! The controls are unresponsive!" Januar fired back over the comms, his tone grim. Elena looked down at her hands. The golden sparks were already dancing across her knuckles, reacting to her skyrocketing adrenaline. She didn't feel the paralyzing fear that had gripped her in the forest weeks ago. She felt an ancient, protective rage. These warriors were dying to protect a fortress that housed her. They were dying for her sanctuary. "I can stop it," Elena said, stepping toward the edge of the stone battlement, her gray eyes flashing with a sudden, molten brilliance. "Elena, no! It's too unstable!" Kaelen roared, reaching out to grab her wrist, but she eluded his grip, stepping entirely onto the narrow stone ledge overlooking the valley. "You told me I am a weapon, Kaelen," Elena yelled back over the sound of explosions, her voice carrying a strange, echoes of multi-layered authority that made Kaelen’s inner Lycan freeze in submission. "Let me fight for my pack." Elena closed her eyes and extended both palms toward the valley below. She stopped trying to control the magic with her human mind. Instead, she surrendered her consciousness to the ancient bloodline humming in her veins. She tapped into the Lunar Grace—the forgotten frequency of the Primal Alphas. BOOM. A pillar of pure, radiant golden light erupted from Elena's body, shooting straight up into the dark storm clouds above. The sheer acoustic force of her magic rippled across Mount Vane, instantly halting the movements of every single werewolf within a two-mile radius. The primitive, instinctual urge to submit to a Primal Alpha forced hundreds of attacking Blood Fang wolves to their knees, their bodies trembling against the dirt. With a sweeping motion of her arms, Elena directed the golden light downward, washing over the toxic green trench like a cleansing wave of fire. The moment her radiant magic touched the silver gas, the chemical toxins neutralized instantly, dissolving into harmless gray ash. The golden light didn't stop there. It seeped directly into the wounds of the fallen Silver Moon warriors, instantly purging the silver poison from their bloodstreams and knitting their torn flesh back together. Within seconds, twenty paralyzed fighters roared back to life, their energy fully restored as they stood back up, their eyes glowing with newfound fanatical loyalty to their new Queen. Elena gasped, her vision spinning as the massive energy output took its toll on her body. She stumbled backward off the ledge, her knees buckling. Before she could hit the stone floor, Kaelen caught her. He pulled her flush against his armored chest, his arms wrapping around her with a terrifying, protective ferocity. His heart was hammering violently against his ribs, his inner Lycan howling in absolute awe and primal possessiveness. "I’ve got you, Little Wolf," Kaelen whispered, his voice thick with emotion as he stared down at her pale, smiling face. His golden eyes swept across the valley, seeing his army completely rejuvenated and the enemy broken in spirit. "You did it. You saved the line." Elena weakly gripped the lapel of his chest piece, her eyes fading back to gray. "We... we aren't done yet, Alpha." Kaelen looked out over the battlements, his obsidian broadsword gleaming under the fading golden light. The Blood Fang vanguard was in full retreat, terrified by the manifestation of a god-like power they couldn't understand. But Kaelen knew this was just the first wave. Alpha Boris was still out there in the fog, waiting. "No," Kaelen desised, his voice dripping with lethal intent as he looked back at Januar. "We are far from done. Prepare the counter-offensive. We hunt them down to the last wolf."
