Blood in the Borderlands
The thunderstorm battered the pine forest on the fringes of the Silver Moon Pack’s territory with ruthless fury. Lightning flashed in rapid succession, tearing through the pitch-black sky and casting jagged silhouettes of trees that looked like looming monsters. Under the relentless downpour, a girl was running, her breath coming in ragged, desperate gasps.
Her name was Elena. The simple fabric of her dress was torn in multiple places, the tattered remnants stained with black mud and fresh, crimson blood.
Elena was a Rogue—a packless werewolf. In this world, being a Rogue was considered the ultimate sin. They were hunted, branded as the vermin of supernatural society, and executed without mercy if they dared to step into official pack territories. But tonight, Elena had no choice. Her hidden village had been burned to the ground by rogue hunters, and fleeing into this forbidden forest was her only chance at survival.
Awoooo!
A piercing wolf howl echoed behind her, cutting through the roaring thunder. It sent a violent shiver straight down Elena's spine. The sound was too close. They were the Enforcers—the elite executioners of the Silver Moon Pack whose sole duty was to purge the borders of trespassers like her.
"Over there! Don't let that stray rat escape!" A booming baritone voice reverberated through the trees.
Elena forced her numb legs to leap over protruding, slippery roots. Her heart hammered violently against her ribcage, pulsing painfully as the remaining healing magic in her body dwindled to nothing. The deep claw wound on her left shoulder from a previous encounter was still oozing warm blood, soaking her arm.
SREEEKK!
Elena’s foot caught on a slick root. Her body was thrown forward, rolling violently across the muddy ground before slamming hard into the trunk of an ancient oak tree. An excruciating pain flared up her spine, causing her vision to go dark for a few terrifying seconds.
Before she could even push herself up, three massive wolves with thick, ash-gray fur leaped from the bushes, surrounding her in a tight triangular formation. Low growls vibrated in their chests, and saliva dripped from their razor-sharp fangs, radiating a suffocating aura of intent to kill. One of the wolves snarled, its body shifting fluidly back into a human form—a heavily muscled man with a pack crest tattooed on his neck.
"You've stepped too far, Rogue," the tattooed man hissed, drawing a gleaming silver dagger from his belt. Silver was the absolute weakness of their kind. "Do you know the penalty for filth that defiles our land?"
Elena crawled backward until her spine hit the rough tree bark. She gripped her own small iron dagger with a trembling hand. "I didn't mean to trespass... I was only seeking refuge. My village was destroyed."
"We don't take excuses from wild animals," the man sneered. He raised his dagger, aiming it directly at Elena's heart, while the two remaining wolves crouched low, preparing to pounce and pin her down.
Elena closed her eyes, bracing herself for the final strike.
BOOM!
Suddenly, a massive, crushing wave of supernatural energy cascaded from the sky, slamming into the clearing like an invisible bomb. The sheer pressure of the aura was so immense that it instantly forced the tattooed man to his knees. The two giant wolves beside him whimpered in agony, flattening their bodies completely against the mud in absolute submission.
Elena forced her eyes open with great difficulty. The wave of energy felt burning hot, yet strangely, instead of crushing her, the aura seemed to soothe her pain. The bleeding on her shoulder miraculously stopped.
From the shadows of the storm, a pair of eyes glowing with pure, brilliant gold cut through the curtain of rain. A man stepped out from the darkness. His posture was commanding and tall, clad in a sleek, waterproof black tactical military trench coat. Every step he took left no indentation in the deep mud, as if the laws of gravity bent to his whim.
The man was Kaelen Vane. The Alpha Supreme of the Silver Moon Pack, the absolute ruler of the Western Lycan Alliance. He was known globally as the most ruthless executioner alive—a man devoid of mercy who had eradicated thousands of Rogues with his bare hands.
"A-Alpha..." the tattooed Lead Enforcer stammered, forcing his head up with the absolute last of his strength. "We were... executing an intruder. A female Rogue."
Kaelen didn't answer. His glowing golden eyes completely ignored his subordinates and locked instantly onto Elena’s fragile, broken form beneath the tree. The moment their eyes met, the world seemed to grind to a halt.
MINE.
A feral, thunderous voice roared inside Kaelen’s mind—the voice of his inner Lycan spirit, which had been dormant and indifferent to any woman for the past thirty years. Kaelen’s heartbeat, usually cold and steady, spiked into a frantic rhythm. The scent of Elena's skin—a breathtaking mix of fresh jasmine blooming in the rain and sweet honey—completely overwhelmed his senses.
The filthy, wounded Rogue girl in front of him was his Mate. The soulmate ordained by the Moon Goddess to rule by his side.
Elena felt the exact same cosmic pull. A warm, electric current coursed from her chest, instantly driving away the freezing cold of the storm. She stared at the man feared by the entire supernatural world in sheer disbelief. How could an Alpha Supreme have a Rogue for a Mate?
Kaelen walked toward Elena, his movements graceful yet predatory.
"Alpha, let me finish her," the tattooed man pleaded again, blindly trying to stand up while pointing his silver dagger toward Elena. He was completely oblivious to the shift in the air.
SLAP!
Without even looking, Kaelen flicked his right hand. A shockwave of highly compressed wind blasted forward, sending the Lead Enforcer flying ten meters through the air. He crashed violently into a tree trunk and slumped down, instantly unconscious. The other two wolves pressed themselves even flatter into the mud, trembling violently under their Alpha's raw fury.
Kaelen knelt in front of Elena on the wet earth. His expensive coat dragged in the mud, but he didn't care. He extended a large, warm hand, gently cupping Elena’s pale cheek with a tenderness that completely defied his murderous reputation.
"What is your name, Little Wolf?" Kaelen’s voice was a deep, gravelly baritone, thick with absolute possessiveness.
"E-Elena..." she whispered. Her body shook, no longer out of fear, but because of the intoxicating sparks igniting across her skin wherever his fingers touched.
Kaelen caught sight of the deep claw marks on her shoulder. His eyes flared brilliant gold again as an intense wave of protective fury washed over him. He unbuttoned his heavy black coat, wrapped it securely around Elena’s shivering frame, and scooped her up into his broad chest as easily as if she weighed nothing.
"You are safe with me now, Elena," Kaelen said, rising to his full, intimidating height. He cast a freezing glance at the remaining Enforcers. "Drag that fool back to the fortress. And announce to the entire pack... anyone who dares to lay a finger on this woman answers directly to my fangs."
Turning his back on the borderlands, Kaelen carried Elena away from the storm, heading toward his grand obsidian castle atop the mountain. Elena rested her head against his chest, listening to the powerful, steady beat of his heart. She knew her life as a fugitive was over, but her new life inside the palace of the bloodstained Alpha had just begun.
