The Vault of Primals

The aftermath of the breach left the western corridor smelling of ozone and ozone-charred copper. Januar’s security sweep had been swift and merciless, ensuring that no other mercenary scouts remained breathing within the inner perimeter. Yet, the atmosphere inside the Obsidian Fortress was far from calm. The news of the attack—and the terrifying display of Kaelen’s feral dominance—had already spread through the stone halls like a virus. Kaelen did not return Elena to the medical wing. Instead, he guided her deep into the restricted subterranean levels of the citadel, far beneath the grand halls and the prying eyes of the Council of Elders. Januar walked three paces behind them, his submachine gun slung low over his tactical vest, his eyes constantly scanning the dark, vaulted passageways. "Alpha," Januar spoke, his voice echoing off the damp stone walls. "The perimeter is completely secure. The grid has been recalibrated to block the specific frequency of the mercenaries' cloaking runes. But we have a bigger problem. The council is in an absolute frenzy. Thomas is already drafting an emergency dispatch to the Western Alliance High King." "Let him write his letters," Kaelen replied, his voice flat and dangerous. He didn't slow his pace. His large hand remained securely wrapped around Elena’s wrist, his thumb occasionally brushing against her skin to draw comfort from the steady, electric warmth of their mate bond. "Thomas is a politician. He thrives on fear. He knows that if I destroy the Blood Fang Pack, his relevance on the council drops to zero." Elena looked around the dim hallway. The modern electronic keypads and surveillance cameras of the upper levels had vanished, replaced by ancient, hand-hewn stone blocks and heavy iron torches that burned with a strange, scentless blue flame. The air down here felt old—older than the pack itself. "Where are you taking me, Kaelen?" Elena asked, her bare feet stepping tentatively on the smooth stone floor. She was still wearing his large tactical coat, the hem dragging slightly against the ground. "To the Archive of the Primals," Kaelen answered, finally stopping in front of a massive, circular door made of solid, polished obsidian. Unlike the rest of the fortress, this door had no handles, no keyholes, and no electronic scanners. Instead, a large, intricate carving of a howling wolf with three eyes was etched into the center of the stone. "Only those carrying the pure blood of an Alpha Supreme can break the seal of this vault. Or so I believed." Kaelen stepped forward and sliced his palm with a small silver dagger he kept tucked into his boot. He pressed his bleeding hand against the center of the wolf’s carved eye. The stone groaned, a deep, bass vibration that vibrated through Elena’s chest, but the door remained firmly shut. Kaelen narrowed his eyes, his golden rims flashing briefly. "The vault requires a dual frequency. It hasn't opened fully since my grandfather’s reign." He turned to Elena, his expression unreadable. "Put your hand next to mine, Little Wolf." Elena hesitated, looking from Kaelen’s bloodied palm to the cold black stone. "I don't have Alpha blood, Kaelen. I'm just a Rogue. I told you, I don't know what that light was back in the medical room." "Your blood spoke to my spirit, Elena," Kaelen whispered, his voice softening into a rare, gentle tone as he reached out and gently guided her hand toward the carving. "Let the stone read your truth." The moment Elena’s small, uninjured palm touched the obsidian surface, a blinding flare of pure, radiant gold erupted from the carving. The stone didn't just groan; it hummed a melodious, ancient frequency that filled the entire subterranean hallway. The blood on Kaelen’s palm began to glow with a matching golden light, the two energies weaving together like two halves of a forgotten puzzle. With a heavy, grinding sound, the massive obsidian door divided into three perfect segments, sliding back into the mountain walls to reveal a vast, illuminated chamber. Januar gasped behind them, his hand instinctively flying to his chest in a protective gesture. "By the Moon Mother... the prophecy of the Twin Crowns." Kaelen didn't say a word. He led Elena into the vault. The room was circular, lined with thousands of ancient leather scrolls, crystal vials filled with glowing silver liquids, and primitive weapons of war that predated modern steel. At the center of the room sat a raised dais, upon which rested a large, shattered crystal basin filled with stagnant, dark water. "What is this place?" Elena breathed, her eyes wide as she took in the historical wealth of the werewolf race. "This is where the history of our kind is kept away from the politics of the council," Kaelen said, walking toward the central dais. He dipped his fingers into the shattered basin. "Three hundred years ago, before the werewolf world was divided into structured packs and alliances, our people were ruled by the Primal Alphas. They weren't just military leaders; they were spiritual conduits. They possessed the Lunar Grace—a magical frequency that could heal silver poisoning, manipulate the elements, and command any wolf through thought alone." He turned to face Elena, his obsidian eyes burning with a mixture of reverence and intense protectiveness. "The Primal lineage was thought to have been completely wiped out during the Great Cleansing. The noble packs killed them because they feared their absolute power. The survivors fled, hiding their scent, shedding their titles, and living as outcasts." Elena’s breath caught in her throat as the puzzle pieces began to fall into place. "My village... we weren't just random outcasts. My grandfather always told me that our blood carried a heavy debt, but he never explained why we had to hide from the official packs. He said our smell would betray us." "They weren't hunting you because you were a Rogue, Elena," Kaelen said, stepping closer until he was towering over her, his hands gently coming to rest on her shoulders. "Alpha Boris of the Blood Fang Pack didn't send those mercenaries to kill my mate. He sent them because he found out that the last living descendant of the Primal Alphas was hiding in the western woods. If he captures you, he can force a blood-bond, claim your magic, and overthrow the entire Western Alliance." Elena looked down at her hands, trembling as the sheer weight of her reality crashed over her. She wasn't just a victim of a random raid; she was the most valuable, dangerous target in the supernatural world. And by bringing her here, Kaelen had just put a massive target on his own pack. "You need to let me go, Kaelen," Elena whispered, tears of frustration gathering in her gray eyes. "The council is right. I am a disease to your pack. If Boris brings his full army to these gates, your warriors will die for a girl they hate." Kaelen’s grip on her shoulders tightened, not to hurt her, but to anchor her to his side. His jaw set into an iron line, his inner Lycan growling softly in absolute refusal. "Look at me, Elena," Kaelen commanded, his baritone voice washing over her like a heavy velvet blanket. She looked up, meeting his fierce, unyielding gaze. "I am Kaelen Vane. I do not run from wars, and I do not surrender what belongs to my soul. The Moon Goddess did not give me a mate so I could watch her bleed. If Boris wants a war for your blood, I will give him a s*******r that the history books will fear to write." He leaned down, his forehead resting gently against hers, their breathing synchronization through the mate bond. The electric sparks between them were no longer erratic; they were a steady, burning fire. "Tomorrow, the training begins. You are going to learn how to weaponize that light inside you, Little Wolf. Because when the Blood Fang arrives, you won't be hiding in the bunker. You will be standing beside me on the battlements, ruling as my Queen."
