Chapter 10 - Standing Her Ground

2026 Words
It all happened so fast, much faster than anyone else in the room could have anticipated that it would. Even Alexa who was standing right beside Dante now seemed stunned as the Don lifted his gun up and took aim at the defenceless Lanzo who was still seated upright on the bed with a bullet wound to his left leg. Her eyes widened too as she gasped aloud with disbelief at Dante’s somewhat understandable actions. Actions she found that she wasn’t yet prepared for. All Alexa knew was that if she didn’t do something to stop him right now, Lanzo was a dead man for sure! And she couldn’t allow that, not after he had chosen to defy his own uncle and assist her to escape. “Goodbye Lanzo.” Dante’s words were harsh, and Alexa reacted quickly before it was too late. Reaching up to grasp at his hand, she cried out. “Dante, wait! Don’t!” Upon hearing the frantic sound of her voice, Dante turned his head to look her in the eye as she forced his arm and the gun back down towards his side. “You can’t do this.” she announced with a pained expression on her face. His own expression immediately morphed into one of unbreakable seriousness at her attempts to defy him in front of all of his men. There was no warmth in his eyes anymore. He was in Reaper Mode. “Alexa…” He spoke to her with an obvious tone of warning. “You do not interfere with my business.” But something changed within her as he spoke those words. An inner fire that had been desperate to come out for quite some time and was only now making itself known. Her eyes narrowed at him as she placed both her hands on her hips. “Excuse me?” Surprised by her sudden defiance, Dante’s left brow lifted as she went on. “Your business? Are you f*****g kidding me right now?” she proclaimed with disbelief. “Alexa-” “-No, I won’t mind my own business! This has everything to do with me, thank you very much!” She spoke without fear, surprising everyone there in the room with them. Including Dante. “Maybe you believe in shooting your way through things, but I certainly don’t!” With his blood beginning to boil, the Reaper suddenly reached out and grabbed her by the wrist with his free hand. Not painfully, but firmly enough to give obvious warning. “That is enough.” He spoke with authority, lifting his brows as he looked her directly in the eye. But Alexa was tired of being walked all over by the men in her life. She had enough of being ignored and taken advantage of and now, whether Dante liked it or not, her voice would be heard! Pulling her arm out of his grasp, she glared back at him before turning and marching her way across the room to stand beside the bed where Lanzo was still seated upright. Alexa was making her stand… at long last. “I won’t let you hurt him.” she declared, causing everyone’s eyes to widen at her courageously foolish stand against their Don. Nicola looked at Dante, fearful of how he might react to being challenged. “You can’t be serious!” Dante snapped at her. “This man betrayed me and yet you choose to stand by him?” “This man saved my life.” she declared proudly, causing Dante’s glare to soften somewhat. “What are you talking about?” Nicola demanded, allowing Dante the chance to come to terms with what they had all just learned. “Lanzo… he helped me tonight, to escape from Vincenzo’s men. His job was to help transport me to another location and he chose to willingly go against Vincenzo’s orders… to save me.” “So then, you’re admitting he works for Moroni?” Nicola countered. “I don’t work for him.” Lanzo disagreed openly with an angered frown. “It’s true, he doesn’t.” Alexa added. But Dante did not look convinced. Not one little bit. “If you really don’t work for him, explain why Vincenzo would entrust you to escort Alexa over his countless other men?” the Don demanded, his finger hovering over the trigger of his gun. “Why you?” “Because… he’s my uncle!” Lanzo came right out with it as a wave of frustration mixed with pain washed over him. The sound of disbelief in the forms of gasps and shocked looks aimed back at them proved that Lanzo had struck a chord with the new information he had just divulged. Including Dante, whose expression showed his confusion and disbelief at this impossible piece of information. “Lanzo!” Alexa turned to look at him with a concerned expression for what he had just openly admitted to Dante and his men. “Why?” She feared for him now more than ever. He didn’t appear to be helping with his cause, that was for sure! “They need to know, Alexa.” Lanzo assured her. “If I’m gonna die here today, Dante deserves to know the truth before that happens. All of it.” Turning back to face Dante, Alexa could see the wheels turning inside of the Don’s head as he stood staring directly at the wounded traitor beside his woman. “Alexa, you knew about this?” he finally asked, his eyes narrowed painfully as he asked. “About who this man really is?” “Actually, for your information I only found out a few hours ago, Dante…” she spoke defensively back at him. “When we left the villa, Vincenzo handed me over to Lanzo and ordered that he escort me to some other location where he would meet up with us later on. And yes, like you I’ll admit that at first, I thought he was nothing but a dirty rotten traitor…” Pausing, Alexa turned to look down at Lanzo with a smile. “But then that all changed when he chose to go against his own blood in order to protect me.” Lanzo smiled back at her before hanging his head low in embarrassment and shame as Alexa went on defending him. “Lanzo risked his own life to help me escape, Dante. Without him, I wouldn’t be here right now. Whether you like it or not, that’s gotta count for something!” Dante found himself at a standstill as he stood staring back at his woman. She was displaying such passion and fire right now and it was a real turn on. All be it, a serious pain in the ass for him as well. No one talked to him like that! He was the f*****g Reaper of New York! And yet, he found himself somewhat inspired by Alexa’s sudden rise in confidence as she stood so strongly for something she believed in. Even if it was going against everything that he had ever stood for as Don. Damn this woman… she would easily be the death of him… He would have to remind her just who was in charge here sooner or later. But that would have to wait. “Everyone but Nicola and Alexa, leave the room.” Dante announced his command in an eerily deep and calming tone, with his eyes locked onto Alexa’s and unblinking. “Now.” Sensing just how serious Dante was being at that very moment, Luca, Cecilio and the others began filing out of the bedroom one by one as Nicola watched them leave in confusion. He had no idea of what his capo had planned, but apparently he was to be a part of it, whatever it was. Once the others had vacated the room, Dante holstered his gun as he turned to Nicola. “Take Lanzo here to be treated back at the mansion.” “Boss, you’re not ser-” Nicola seemed shocked by the command. “-You heard me, Nicola.” Dante cut in over him with a stern tone. “Now do it.” Fighting back his frustration at having to assist a possible enemy to be treated by their medical team, Nicola bit his tongue as he marched across the room, past Alexa and to where Lanzo was sitting upright on the mattress. With Alexa standing only a foot away from him, Nicola spoke with a hushed tone to his voice so that only she could hear his words. “You’d better be right about him, piccolo.” With a huff the large underboss then bent down and scooped up Lanzo as if he weighed nothing, before marching back out of the room to complete his task. With Lanzo being half out of it due to the pain and blood loss, he didn’t seem to fight being manhandled and carried like a bride would be on her wedding day. And once they were gone from the room, Dante and Alexa were the only two who remained. A sizzling tension now filled the air as the Don stood staring at the woman who was causing him so much trouble. The woman who held his heart within the palm of her hand. The woman he would do anything for. “You will never again speak to me like that in front of my men, do you understand?” He spoke with the eerily calm tone. One laced with hinted warning and serious danger. But Alexa was having none of it! She was sick of being walked all over by men in her life. Whether they were her loving partner or a rivalled enemy. She vowed to herself from this moment forward that she would no longer be the victim! “Don’t give me a reason to then.” She spoke defiantly, crossing both her arms over her chest while turning away from him and visibly huffing. His eyes narrowed as his gritted his teeth together in frustration at her attitude. “Are you forgetting who I am, bella?” Dante warned, slowly closing in on her with one long stride after the next. “Of what I could do to you?” Rolling her eyes at his pathetic attempts to frighten her, Alexa shook her head. “You don’t scare me, Dante Romano.“ Now his inner fires began to burn brightly as his c**k twitched with excitement. This was a new side of her, far more confident and unafraid. He liked it. “Is that so?” he mused, taking yet another couple steps forward. “Then perhaps I am not trying hard enough.” Coming within reaching distance of her now, the Don continued moving in closer, forcing her to counter his movements backwards out of obvious defiance. She would not allow him to win. “What the hell are you talking about?” she demanded from him, looking him up and down in question as the Don finally had her cornered. She gasped as her ass connected up against the edge of the large desk now located directly behind her. She had nowhere to go. And now, the two of them were all alone in the bedroom… “What are you doing?” she asked with a surprisingly timid voice. The smouldering expression he was now giving her told her exactly what it was that he wanted from her. And it caused her to swallow nervously as her breathing began to quicken. “Oh, I think you know what I want from you, bella…” he cooed smoothly into her ear as he leaned in closer towards her with a growing smirk. “And now for your punishment.” Her brows furrowed inwards as he spoke the word aloud to her. “Punishment?” His smirk widened into a full-blown grin. It was dark, sinister and filled with lust. “Yes, bella…” He chuckled deeply for a second before adding one last thing. “I’m going to f**k so hard you won’t be able to walk straight.”
