A Plan

Sarah I awoke to soft fur pressed against my face. I hadn’t realised how large Tyson was in his wolf form. My wings were curled around both of us, sealing us into a small private cocoon. We must have transformed during the night to fight against the cold. The cool morning breeze shot through me as my wings began retreating. Tyson still half asleep growled as the wind began to ruffle his fur. He was so warm. I shuffled further into his warm soft chest, clinging to his fur. His large arms wrapped around me as I did. He began transforming back into a man as we lay there clinging to each other. “We need to get going” Tyson began pushing his arms beneath him readying himself to get up. Before he had a chance, I wrapped my arms around his neck and pulled him back down to the floor. He chuckled as I did before wrapping me into his arms and placing soft kisses onto my mouth. “Although I want nothing more to stay here with you, we have to keep moving” “No, let's just stay here a little more” I traced my hands over his chest as I talked. He chuckled before picking me up and slinging me over his shoulder. “Hey!” “If you’re not going to get up on your own then I guess I’ll just have to carry you” “At least let me get dressed first” Tyson began slowly tracing my legs with a lazy finger as he contemplated my proposition. “Well I don’t have clothes, so I think it’s only fair that you don’t either” He pulled me back over his shoulder and into his arms as he studied me. I couldn’t help but smile as a playful grin spread across his face. He let me down gently and I shook my head as I began getting dressed. Tyson perked up again, just like he had done the other night. “They’re close” “How do you know?” Tyson turned to me as I spoke. Fur beginning to grow from his skin. “I can smell them” Tyson’s voice had turned into a harsh rumble as he continued his transformation. “Wait you’re not leaving again!” I raced towards him and grabbed his arms as his muscles continued to bulge and transform. I looked desperately into his eyes until they finally softened, and he nodded his large head. He placed his paws out in front of him and stretched down towards the ground. I cautiously climbed onto his back. I hope that’s what he had meant by that, otherwise, it would be very awkward. He quickly rose back up before bounding deep into the forest. I gripped his fur as he ran. I felt like each propulsion would make me slip and fly backwards into the hard earth. I buried my face into his fur as I desperately clung on. When would this end? We didn’t even have a plan; all we could do was run. There had to be something more to all of this, to whatever I was. Something they needed to keep hidden. A cottage appeared in the distance. Tyson began to slow as he approached it. I slipped off his back as soon as it was safe. He fell into a heap on the ground and quickly reverted into a man. I helped him onto his feet as he stumbled into the cottage. It seemed deserted, I quickly rummaged the pantry for food, finding only a few tins of beans. I began cooking them on the small stove while Tyson pulled himself onto the bed behind me. I found some men’s clothing in the cupboard and threw them onto the bed before quickly grabbing a bowl and pouring in the beans. Tyson sat up as I began offering him spoonsful. “Where’s yours?” “I don’t need any” Tyson shook my head, avoiding my hand. “We can share then; I’ll only take each spoon after you have one” I opened my mouth ready to object but Tyson shot me a defiant glance. Slipping some of the beans of the spoon I took the first bite, before quickly offering the next to Tyson. He begrudgingly accepted but seemed annoyed at how I had only taken half a spoonful. We continued taking turns eating until the bowl was scraped clean. “I must say, you’re a wonderful cook” Tyson’s cheeky grin beamed up to me as I shot a quick glare before taking the bowl to the kitchen. “So, how did you know to come here?” “We used to know the owners, good friends. They moved out a while ago to follow their research. They were anthropologists and set out to learn more about human and magicals, their connections and behaviours in the past” I turned back to the bed as Tyson talked, sitting back next to him and resting my head on his shoulder. Anthropologists. Maybe they could help me understand what I am. “Do you know where they went?” Tyson turned to me and raised his eyebrow questioningly. “I’ve been thinking. They are chasing us for a reason, and they’re not going to stop until they have what they’ve come for. But there must be more to it. Perhaps if we understood what the issue is then we can use it against them. It must be something worth being afraid of if they’re willing to go to such lengths to prevent it” I stared at Tyson, waiting expectantly for an answer. He pursed his lips, that didn’t seem like a good sign. “I know they were heading south; a lot of information had been lost during a cultural revelation over a century ago. They planned to uncover some of the old mysteries of the past” “So, you like the plan?” Tyson began getting dressed in the clothes I had laid on the bed. “Of course. That’s much better than running around for the foreseeable future. It’s good to have a solid plan, especially when they are tracking us a lot faster than previously predicted. We must do this fast; we’ve had too many close calls with the Senate. The next might be our last.” He turned as he finished talking, his chest still bare. I couldn’t help as I reached out my hand and began tracing my fingers across his bare skin. I quickly turned back around as I realised what I was doing, clearing my throat trying to get a hold of myself. “So, south?” Tyson’s arms wrapped around my waist and he pulled me back into him. “I have an idea where in the South, but I only know the name, not the location. They had a news article published on it, so we just need to find a computer” I nodded distractedly, unable to fully understand what he had just said while he was so close, pressed against me. “I have a friend near here, we can borrow their computer for a quick web search” He walked around me as he headed out the door, grabbing my hand as he did. I quickly followed behind him as we began walking together. It was nice, Tyson seemed much better after our quick stop. He had been running all day so no wonder he was so tired, I could barely fly a few minutes before tiring. “It’s kind of sad seeing you in clothes again” Tyson chuckled heavily next to me at my comment. “Creep” He pulled me closer into him and I couldn’t help but laugh. “We’re almost here” A large mansion had appeared through the trees in front of us. In front was a large open courtyard full of short green hedges. A woman was kneeling, picking at flowers in the grass. “Look, there is something I need to tell you” Tyson stopped abruptly, turning me to face him. He looked so grim. What happened? “It’s just…” “Ty!” The crouching woman had gotten up and began to race towards Tyson and me. Her beautiful face lit up with a large grin. No, it couldn’t be. Her face faltered as she studied me, and the realisation hit me full force. It was Isabella. Tyson’s fiancé.
