"Mom!", called Lexy.
"What is it, honey?", I shouted while making some hotcakes.
"I can't find Mr. Pebbles", she said in a sad tone.
"Oh honey, I'll look for him later. Come downstairs, the food will get cold", I replied.
"Fine", she said, defeated.
She came downstairs for breakfast and I sat in front of her to eat as well.
"I'll find him, don't worry", I reassured her.
"I don't want him to get hurt", she said, and she almost started to cry.
"He's fine. Now eat your breakfast or you'll be late", I said, and she hurried.
"Now let's go", I said as soon as we finished breakfast.
We took the bus to get her to school and on our way there she seemed thoughtful.
"Is there something wrong?", I asked her.
"Why don't the other kids take the bus like us?", she asked.
"Well that's because we don't have a car", I replied.
"Oh", she said a bit dissapointed.
I wanted to give her everything but it was not enough. The Alpha treats us like she isn't his daughter and tries to sabotage any work opportunity for me. If he wants me to be the pack w***e, that's not happening now or ever. The bus stopped and dropped us at Rebecca's school.
Her teacher greeted me with such a warm smile.
"Hi, Rebecca! How are you?", she kneeled to be at her height.
"Hi, Mrs. Gonzalez, I'm not doing so well. I couldn't find Mr. Pebbles this morning", she sadly said.
"Oh Dios mío. I'm sure he'll be back soon", she told her.
"You do?"
"I'm 100% sure. Now let's get into class. I'm sure you are improving your reading skills", she encouraged her.
"Yes! Mom's helping me out"
"I'm sure she is", she said as Rebecca got into the classroom.
"Mr. Pebbles is her pet. A ferret to be exact", I told her.
"I see. Well, her reading and writing skills are above the average and she might get a scholarship in the future. If she keeps this pace, the school will give her an exam so she can be in 4th grade", she told me.
"Fourth grade? But she's only five!", I said in misbelief.
"Well, I think she should be in 4th grade but maybe she could be in third grade. It all depends. I know you have been teaching her how to read, write and count on your own too, but thanks to that she's even getting bored at school", she says calmly.
"I understand", I said with a worried tone.
She gave me a small smile and turned to the class that was about to start. Lexy was looking at nothing in particular and my heart ached for her sad look. I waited for the bus on our way home and got to the border of the Blue Springs pack. Walking to my house like I don't know any of these assholes.
Heading home to look for Mr. Peebles was not how I was supposed to start my day. After looking for him and find him in the laundry, I put my scrub on and went to the pack’s hospital. I was a nurse there because of my healing abilities.
“Roxy, why are you late?”, asked Dr. Williams.
“Sorry, my daughter had a crisis”, I said, as if finding Mr. Peebles was a matter of life and death.
“Last warning”, he said before returning to his office.
I sighed and took a look at my patients list. I had to check on one or two that were having a good time with silver and wolfsbane.
The very first on my list was the beta’s son, Andrew Miller.
As soon as I approached the door, Emily grabbed my hand.
“Careful, he is not in a good mood today”, her hand trembled.
“I’ll be fine”, I assured her. “Where’s his breakfast?”, I asked.
“He threw it”, she said with trembling voice.
“I’m sorry that you had to deal with him. I’ll arrive early tomorrow, ‘kay?”, I said, rubbing her shoulders. She only nodded and whispered, “Thank you”.
When Emily left, I opened the door like it was my own house. It was dark and I hated that he tried to keep the room dark. It is not good for him and he knows it. I pulled the curtain and opened the windows. He broke the lightbulb a week ago and no one dared to come and fix it. I heard him groan because his blanket was not enough to keep him in the dark.
“So, I heard you threw your food. Is that true?”, I asked while fixing some paperwork.
“ It is none of your business”, he mumbled.
“Is that so? Well, I guess you can forget about going outside”, I grinned.
“Outside?”, he pulled the blanket to reveal a very curious teenager with the full desire of running again as a wolf.
“Yes, outside. You know, with the trees, the birds, the wind”, I joked.
“I know, Roxy, I’m not stupid”, he said in a bad mood.
“Well, if you’re not stupid, why did you throw your goddamn food?!”, I asked furiously at him.
“Because I’m tired of trying! I’ll not be able to walk again and YOU of all people here know it”, he screamed at the top of his lungs.
I didn’t say anything. I was just waiting for him to calm down a little.
“Can you leave me alone?”, he asked with a trembling voice, and I knew he wanted to cry. I took a deep breath and left without saying anything. He wanted space, but later he will have to deal with lunch, and I’ll be there to make sure he eats all of it.
