Chapter 1
BANG. Light spilled in through the windows just above our bed. I bolted upright "what the f**k was that Jax?" I turned and saw my boyfriend laying next to me, perfect as per usual. His long body laying straight with his sandy blonde hair falling over his eyes. "Jax we need to get up, I think someone's crashed their car again". He still didn't respond. That's unusual. We've had 7 crashes outside our house in the past year, perks of living on a main road. Usually Jax was a light sleeper. It was odd he didn't wake up but he had a long day at work tomorrow so I decided not to disturb him. I slipped out of bed and wrapped myself in my favourite fluffy pink dressing gown and matching slippers so I could go and investigate. I pulled my phone off the charger and started toward the front door.
To my suprise there were no cars on the road and the world around me was in dead silence. "Dam it" I mutter realizing all the lamp posts were off. A fuse must have blown, that's probably what the the light and the bang was. I pulled my dressing gown closer as a gog was beginning to set in. Being outside at 3am on a crisp Autumn morning was not my idea of fun. I made my way back inside longing for the warmth of our bed and to snuggle closer to Jax for a few more hours until I had to head back to the hospital for a split shift. As I wandered back inside I was cringing at the thought of having to empty all the catheters at 7am.
Once back inside I looked at Jax and smiled, he looked so peaceful. I still couldn't believe how lucky I was to have him in my life, 4 years of being with my soul mate made my heart flutter. I climbed back into bed keeping my dressing gown on as I was still shivering from being out in the cold. I turned over and brushed the hair out of his eyes.
WHAT. THE. f**k. Blue tinted orbs were staring up at the ceiling light the entire room. Where did his green eyes go!? Am I dreaming? I pinch myself. Nothing. I slap myself. Nothing. Surely I'm dreaming? Surely this isnt real. I'm freaking out now. I start to shake him, screaming his name. Nothing. I'm panicking what do I do. My phones still in my pocket so I decide I'm going to call an ambulance. I dial 111 and get a dial tone. What is happening. I dial again and still get nothing. I try to call my mum and get a dial tone again. I jump out of bed and grab Jax's phone to try again. I'm still getting a dial tone. Suddenly Jax sits up. He robotically turns towards me and says "intruder, error 5014." I feel tears fill my eyes and I'm sure my heart is beating so hard you could hear it from next door. Jax continues to repeat the same thing over and over, not moving a muscle while those blue orbs stare straight into my soul. I'm not sure if seconds or minutes went by but I suddenly hear footsteps outside, and then the front door being ripped from it's hinges. In a split second there are about 10 other people standing at the entry way to our room, all with the same glowing eyes. I panic, I don't know what to do. I throw myself through the window above our bed. I can hear the glass shattering and I can feel wet drops all over head and hands. It's not raining, I know it's blood but with the amount of adrenaline coursing through my veins I don't feel any pain. I run barefoot into the night, still wearing my dressing gown. All I can focus on is the thuds my feet make as they slap against the ground. I have no idea where I'm going, I have no idea what's going on. All I know is I'm not safe and something weird is happening.
I feel like I'm about to pass out, I'm not even sure if I'm even taking in any oxygen anymore. I see a tree ahead of me and realise I've run out to the forest. I feel a tug in my memory and remember this is where my dad took my brother and I when we were kids, we'd built a hut up one of the trees years ago and I found my feet were carrying me to that spot. After what felt like hours I finally saw the large pone tree with a crappy little rope ladder and knew I'd made it to my destination.
I climed up each rail, realizing that my feet were cut up as every step hurt. My body ached and I knew I'd have to attend to my cuts soon. My hands finally reached the wooden floor of the hut and I pulled myself in. It still looked the same. Makeshift windows on each wall covered in cobwebs, the wooden counter to my left that was clearly childs height. Random pots and pans, a few metal cups collected on the counter. The makeshift bow and arrows dad had made us. He was a hunting enthusiast and loved showing us the world of nature and all it had to offer. I snapped back to reality the moment I saw the old green first aid kit and knew I had to tend to my wounds. I pulled out a few bandages and bits of gauze along with some expired saline solution and began to patch myself up. Once done, light was beginning to seep through the windows but I couldn't keep my eyes open any longer. I passed out on cold wooden floor and slept with no dreams coming to mind.
