CHAPTER 1 _ RETURNING HOME
Spending the holidays at home. The tiny road that ran across the slopes towards Cedar Ridge was covered with gentle, shimmering waves of snow. As her car's tires crunched on the ice-covered pavement, Sarah Callahan automatically tightened her hold on the steering wheel. Nestled immediately below a well-known ski resort, the village where she had grown up had always been a haven of love and joy during the holidays. The sort of place where the smell of pine trees permeated the air and neighbours dropped cookies on your porch. For most folks, Cedar Ridge was magical. It was bittersweet for Sarah. Since she married Mark and relocated to the city in search of a life she believed would offer her happiness, she had not returned for almost ten years. It wasn't exactly how she had imagined spending the holidays back home, just divorced and feeling like a failure. She had little option, though, as she had nowhere else to go. "Look, Mama!" Sarah was startled out of her reverie by Lily's animated voice coming from the rear seat. "There is a lot of snow!" Sarah couldn't help but smile at her six-year-old daughter's wide-eyed awe as she looked in the rearview mirror. Lily stared at the immaculate snow blanket that covered the mountain slopes as she put her palms against the frozen pane. "Is it likely that Grandpa will allow me to go skiing?" Bouncing in her seat, Lily questioned. “Maybe,” Sarah said in a gentle voice. "If you ask him politely." Sarah was actually unsure about her father's level of interest in this holiday season. Having them home made him very happy, but since her mother's death a few years ago, things had changed. Cedar Ridge appeared as Sarah reached the last turn. Holiday lights placed along rooftops cast a gleaming glow over the small community. The main street was lined with shops and cafés, each with festive displays in its windows. The snowy slopes of the ski resort, speckled with skiers swerving elegantly down the routes, towered over the town. The little community was enveloped in a mystical white silence as the snow drifted gently. Following her divorce, Sarah Callahan had no great plans to move back to the house she grew up in. However, she came here with the hopes of providing her daughter Lily, who is six years old, with a memorable holiday. It was lovely. It's even better. However, it wasn't enough to dispel the uneasiness that was weighing heavily on her chest. "Mom!” Lily spun in front of the mirror and shouted out, her hazel eyes gleaming. "Mistletoe will be all over the place at tonight's Christmas celebration, according to Uncle Ryan! Under it, someone might give you a kiss”. It nearly caused Sarah's cocoa to spill. "Young lady, what gives you the impression that I'm interested in kissing?" With a smile, Lily shrugged. "Because Uncle Ryan says you need more romance in your life," Sarah mentally reminded herself to chastise Ryan for sharing too much. She grinned while ruffling Lily's curls. "Come on, let's just concentrate on the celebration. You can put on your beloved sparkling outfit. Sarah wasn't prepared for romance, in actuality. The scar from her divorce hadn't completely gone away. Her only wish was to have a quiet vacation with her family. The smell of pine and woodsmoke welcomed Sarah as soon as she got out of the car in her father's driveway. Her childhood memories came flooding back, including Christmas mornings spent tearing open presents by the fire, skating on the frozen pond close to the ski lodge, and snowball fights with her brother. "Mom, this place is really lovely!" Lily whirled in the snow and cried out. Sarah mutely acknowledged, "It is," but her eyes continued to hover over the house rather than the snow-capped hills. The bustling house looked to be quieter now, and the happiness that had characterised her childhood Christmases seemed like a thing of the past. The life she had left behind here was very different from the house in which she had grown up. The front door creaked open, and her father came on the porch, dressed in a heavy flannel jacket. His aged face broke into a grin as he extended his arms. "There's my girls!" Sarah felt a knot form in her throat as she held him. Regardless of how much time had passed or how much had changed, her father's embrace still felt familiar. "Grandpa!" Lily squealed and threw herself into his arms. He lifted her easily, despite his age, and spun her around. "Look at you!" You've grown a full foot since I last saw you. Lily giggled. "I'm gonna help you decorate the tree!" "Of course you are," her father replied, grinning at Sarah. "We saved the best ornaments for you." Sarah took a time to rest. This was why she had returned: to give Lily the Christmas she deserved, surrounded by family and love. But just as she was ready to gather their belongings, a voice screamed out from the driveway. "Need a hand with those?" Sarah froze, her heart skipping a beat as she turned to face the familiar voice. Ethan stood by her car, wearing a navy ski jacket and a hat pulled low over his black hair. The youngster she knew was now a man, with broad shoulders and an easy smile that were both alien and familiar. "Ethan?" She spoke barely above a whisper. He grinned as he approached. "Welcome back, Sarah." The sight of Ethan after so many years triggered a range of emotions Sarah was unable to handle. He was older now, more gruff, and exuded a quiet confidence that had not existed when they were kids. But his smile remained the same—the one that made her feel like the most important person in the room. "Ethan," she said, attempting to steady her voice. "Still remember me, huh?" His grin widened, but his gaze softened as he focused on her. "It's been a while." "Yeah, it has." Lily tugged on her coat, interrupting the moment. "Mommy, who is that?" Sarah blinked, her cheeks flushing. "Oh, um… Ethan is a long-time friend of mine. He and your uncle Ryan grew up together. Ethan crouched down to Lily's level, his face friendly and open. "You must be Lily." I have heard a lot about you." Lily tilted her head curiously. "Are you a skier?" Ethan laughed, looking to the snow-covered mountains in the distance. "I am. I work in a resort, teaching people how to ski. Have you ever tried it? "No, but I want to!" Lily exclaimed, her enthusiasm bursting over. "Well, maybe we can change that this year," Ethan added, winking at her. Sarah cleared her throat, feeling a desire to reclaim control of the conversation. "We should bring our stuff inside. "It was a long drive." Ethan stood and met her gaze once more. "Of course." Let me assist." Before she could argue, he took the luggage from the trunk and followed her into the home. Later that evening, when Lily had fallen asleep and the house was silent, Sarah found herself peering out the kitchen window. Snowflakes danced in the light from the porch light, and the distant melody of wind chimes drifted on the breeze. She clasped her hands around a steaming mug of tea, hoping the heat would relieve the chill in her chest. "You always liked to look out at the snow," a voice murmured behind her. Sarah turned to see Ethan leaning against the doorframe, his hands in the pockets of his flannel-lined jacket. His presence filled the room in a way that was both comforting and unsettling. “I didn’t realize you’d still be here,” she said, her tone carefully neutral. “Still here?” He raised an eyebrow. “You make it sound like I’ve been stuck in the same spot for ten years.” She bit her lip, suddenly regretting her words. “I didn’t mean it like that.” Ethan stepped closer, his gaze searching hers. “I know what you meant, Sarah. You thought I’d leave Cedar Ridge, just like you did.” The weight of his words hung between them, heavy with unspoken history. “I had my reasons,” she said quietly, turning back to the window. “And now you’re back.” “For Lily,” Sarah said, her voice firm. “She deserves a Christmas with her family.” Ethan nodded, though the hint of a smile played at his lips. “She’s a great kid. You’ve done a good job with her.” “Thanks.” They stood in silence for a moment, the only sound the faint whistle of the wind outside. Finally, Ethan broke the quiet. “You know, Sarah, just because you left doesn’t mean you don’t belong here.” She glanced at him, her chest tightening at the sincerity in his eyes. “I’m not sure I know where I belong anymore.” Ethan’s smile was soft, almost wistful. “Maybe you just need to stick around long enough to find out.”
