I heard footsteps in the corridor. The smell of flowers like those kept in death parlors hit my nose. I pulled the bed sheet tightly over my head. I heard my bedroom door opened with a slow creaking sound. The sound of footsteps approaching my bed sends a chill down my spine and suddenly I felt a tug at my bed sheet. Someone was trying to pull the bed sheet away. I clung on to it with all my strength. But it was of no use. The nauseating smell of flowers filled the bedroom almost gagging me. Finally the tugging stopped . I loosened my grip on the sheet a bit and suddenly all at once, the bed sheet flew away from my grasp, exposing me. A tall shadow was looming over me. It was almost humane. Bright red eyes glowed as if I was staring into a fire pit....
"June? JUNE HAVENS. Are you sleeping in my class?"
I woke up startled. Around me everyone was laughing so hard that some of them were bent over and others had snot coming out their nose. Mrs. James looked furious.
"Young lady, how could you sleep in my class? Go meet the principal after class."
Oh crud! This is the third time in a week. I'm sure that it's another day of detention for me. Well I could at least work on my new story.
So here I am after the class, and after a trip to the principal's office, in detention. Our teacher on duty, Mr. Hayes, is snoring away while the others are sitting bored. I slowly got up to sneak away.
When I almost reached the door handle, Bob, the clumsiest guy in the room, had to drop his scissors. Perfect timing dude!!!
I looked back, and it’s a miracle that Mr. Hayes hasn't woken up. I slowly got out and oops!! There stands my homeroom teacher, Ms. Bianca.
Ok. That's it. Back to detention room again.
Ms. Bianca had to call my parents. You must be thinking why I slept during class hours three times in a row?
1. Mrs. James’s classes are super boring
2. Maths makes me sleepy... which is very obvious...
3. My sleep cycle is ruined because of the nightmares I get often.
This time, my sneaking out tactic didn't work. My parents were angry. Even though they were the cool type, and they did understand how boring maths can be, they didn't give ears to my reasons for sneaking out of detention room.
We went home after a nice scolding from my parents and a ton of judgmental talks and reasons on how I'll become a bad influence if I keep up with my 'napping' in class blah... blah... blah... from Ms. Bianca.
I was always the naughty child of my family, the bad influence. I don't know how April got away with it. She was the nice one among the two. Even though my parents never showed favoritism towards us, I could tell at times, they actually liked April a tad bit more than me. She was the brainy one. I am the artistic one. We are different in our characters too. Even though we are twins and we look alike, the only physical differences were in our eyes. She had purple eyes while I had blue.
My mom used to tell us that we came from a family of sorcerers and that we had the blood of the sorcerers. She used to joke about being careful not to burn down the house, while my parents were away, with our powers. But we never believed in that. For us, it was just a bed time story.
Our parents were professors at the central university. Most of the time, they were busy with work, leaving me and April alone at home. We had each other to support. But when it comes to studies, April just leaves me alone and I'm left to face boredom on my own...
Once such day that our parents were at work, it actually happened...
