I am working as a doctor at the City hospital. It’s been eight years since I heard any news about my sister. Mom and dad have moved to Boston. They wanted to have a 'life of their own', as they quoted it. They still haven’t recovered from loosing April just like that. During these years, she hasn't contacted me or our parents. Not even once. I tried to find her a few years ago. Even though she told us never to look for her again, she's my sister. I can't possibly leave her like that. So I went to look for her. Searching her in a big city like London was tough. Some of her friends whom I had contact with told me that she worked at a law firm in London. But when I reached there, I found out that she had moved from there. No one knew where she was. I wanted to meet her so badly. But my entire search was in vain.
I had to abort my mission on finding her. But I still kept an ear out hoping to hear something.
Being a pediatric oncologist, I met many people. I even met a kid who looked just like my younger self. Even though the hospital was never a happy place, some of the patients made it brighter. Especially the kids. They spread their cuteness and joy all over the place. One such day, as I was working, I got a phone call.
"Hello. Dr. Havens speaking. May I know who this is?"
"Miss me?!!"
That sound was something that I would never forget. However matured or deepened it became, I would always recognize that voice even from a crowd.
"April? Is it you?!! Where are you? Where have you been?"
"Slow down sis… Yes. It's me. Let's meet up and talk."
"Ok. Where?"
We agreed to meet up at the Starbucks near our home in the afternoon. I took half a day off. I was really excited to meet her again. The eight years we were apart felt too long. My patience was almost at its end. I took off in my car, almost hitting a lamp post. But I managed to make it to the Starbucks in one piece. As I was parking the car, I saw someone at the entrance to the place. She had black hair like mine. She was wearing a short dress. The breeze was playing with her hair. I got out of my car and approached that person.
"April?"
Hearing that name, she turned. It was just like looking in a mirror for me, except my mirror image had red eyes.
"Hey sis.. Long time. Let's go in. Or do you want to stand out here and catch a cold?"
She laughed. I realized that she had changed a lot. Not a nerd anymore and not that nervous girl who went to study abroad. We went inside the café and ordered our drinks.
"So... What are you doing now-a-days sis? From your intro from the phone call, I presume you are a doctor."
"Yes. I'm a pediatric oncologist. I work here at the city hospital. Where have you been all these years April? Did you know how worried mom and dad were? Why didn't you even call us?"
"Wow… Slow it down. Which one should I answer first?"
"How about you tell me everything?"
"Ok. As to where I was, I was in London for a few years. Then I got a job in a law firm in Tuscany. So I moved there. I should have called you guys, but I thought I needed some time alone. So here I am after eight years. I guess I have changed right. Well these eight years…."
She trailed off. She then looked at me straight in the eyes.
"… I have learned what I am."
"Learned what you are? What does that mean?"
"Nothing... I’m no longer that shy kid anymore. How about you? How have you been sis…?"
"I'm doing fine. So why did you come back after all these years?"
She took a sip of coffee. Her eyes seemed colder to me. The warmth that I've felt when we were kids had somehow disappeared. We talked about things that happened here while she was away. She told me she had to come back due to her job. Her law firm had sent her to represent some corporate in this city. She would be staying here for six months and had taken an apartment nearby her office. I asked her to come live with me. My boyfriend and I were the only ones staying there with our dog. But she denied.
"It will be easier if I were to stay nearby my office. That'll make it more convenient to reach the office on time. Plus I don't have to drive."
"Ok. Suit yourself. So have you settled down or u need my help to arrange stuff at your apartment?"
"No. I'm fine. So tell me about your boyfriend. How did you guys meet? Is he cute?"
She had a naughty smile on her face.
"Cut it out. You are talking about MY boyfriend for Pete's sake. Yes he's cute. As to how we met, that's a long story."
So I told her how I met my boyfriend...
