Prologue
The air tasted like sea salt and ozone, thick enough to chew. Eara Vance stared out the tiny, reinforced window of the sleek, black hydrofoil. Outside, the ocean was a turbulent indigo, but ahead, cutting through the haze, was Isla Null—or, as the kontrabida press called it, The Aviary. It didn't look like a rehab facility. It looked like a temple built for a brutal god. A chime sounded above her head. The man across from her, a stocky, silent security officer in a spotless white uniform, slid a small metallic box across the table. "Protocol Zero, Ms. Vance," he said, his voice flat and robotic. Gosh, ito na. Eara's throat tightened. She lifted the box. Inside, resting on black velvet, was the object that had bought her sister's next year of medical treatments: the Collar. It was a piece of cold, silver-white metal, thinner than a wristwatch but clearly non-removable. It was an aesthetic piece of hardware, designed to look less like a restraint and more like an expensive accessory. "The Collar tracks your vitals, your location, and your proximity to certain individuals. It ensures the integrity of The Merit Protocol," the officer explained, never blinking. "You are Staff, Ms. Vance. Your duty is Order. Your reward is points. Do not lose them." Eara carefully picked it up. It was surprisingly heavy. "And if I break a rule? What if I fail?" A faint, humorless smile touched the officer's lips. "Staff who violate Level 5 rules—namely, engaging in intimacy with a Guest—are immediately demoted to Asset Status. Their points are erased. And the cost of their freedom... becomes infinite." Huwag mong isipin ang Guests. Huwag kang tumingin. Just earn the money for Leia and leave. Eara took a deep breath, the taste of salt burning her lungs, and fastened the Collar around her own neck. It clicked shut with a sound that felt horribly final. It was cold for a moment, then warmed instantly, embedding itself against her skin. The transition from the dock to the main staff quarters was a blur of polished chrome and silent electric vehicles. Finally, she was escorted to the concierge sector—a lush, glass-walled observation lounge overlooking the Guest terraces. That's when she saw him. He wasn't meant to be out. The high-ranked Guests, the true children of the global elites, typically didn't emerge until sunset. Yet, there he was, standing by the edge of an infinity pool that appeared to cascade directly into the sea. Kairos Valdemar. The name was a dark whisper in global finance. Heir to the Valdemar Group. Rumored to be here for the murder of a competitor. He was in an open white linen shirt, wet at the collar, clinging perfectly to the lines of his body. His dark hair was slicked back, and his eyes—a startling, almost colorless grey—were fixed on the horizon. He was the definition of predatory beauty. As Eara watched, a younger man—a low-ranked Guest, clearly trying to prove himself—approached Kairos and said something Eara couldn't hear. Kairos didn't turn around. He merely lifted his hand, casually flicking a tiny, golden metal chip over his shoulder. It landed directly in the younger man's open champagne flute. "That's one thousand points," Kairos's voice, a low baritone that carried perfectly over the sea breeze, drifted through the glass wall. "Now, leave." The younger man's eyes widened with greed and shame. He snatched the chip from the glass and scurried away, his humiliation purchased for a paltry sum. Nakakahiya. Kairos finally turned his head. His grey eyes scanned the panoramic windows, ignoring the shimmering view, ignoring the other Guests, until his gaze stopped—directly on Eara. It was an impossible distance, but the sheer force of his attention made the Collar around her neck feel like it was shrinking. He wasn't looking at the building; he was looking through it, directly at the fear she hadn't known she was showing. He lifted his hand again, not in a wave, but in a slow, possessive gesture. He placed his index finger exactly over his own metallic choker. He didn't smile. Then, her collar gave a sudden, sharp BEEP-BEEP-BEEP. Level 1 Proximity Alert: Guest Focus Detected. The sound was startling. Eara stumbled back a step. Jusko. Through the silent, thick glass, Eara realized the terrible truth of her contract. She hadn't been hired to serve the rich. She had been delivered to one man. Kairos tilted his head, a single, deliberate movement. His eyes held hers—a promise and a threat. You're caught, little bird. And the cage is gilded with gold. I feel like I'm trapped with no way out.
