Chapter 2 "Wake up Jolen!" Chris tugged on her son to wake him up. "Mommy, I want to sleep." Chris sighed and rubbed the back of her fingers on his cheeks. It was a Saturday and she wanted to get to work early to miss the traffic. She dressed first and then dressed Jolen and picked his backpack up and put it over her shoulder. She then picked him up to carry him. The sky was dark blue and the sun barely shone through the buildings. Jumping onto the bus quickly, she made her way to the back where Jolen can lay on her lap and sleep. She pulled out her cellphone and looked at the time. "7:10, I told him not to stay up late." She mumbled. Chris ran her fingers through his hair. They were soft and brown. He's such a good kid she thought. He's worth the glares and disgrace comments she's gotten from those who once respected her and her family. She hummed to him a song she remembered her mom once doing to her. It was tiring and she felt lonely. She could remember the look on her son's face when he looked at the other kids and their fathers. He didn't say anything but she knew how her son felt. She felt the pain in her heart as if she was experiencing it, but in another view she was. Cafe Go Go was barely opening and she spotted her boss at the door. They waved at each other. Inside it was cool where it felt refreshing. Outside was hot. "You've been coming earlier recently." Millie pointed out to her. She didn't want to say that she'd been getting uncomfortable feeling as if someone followed her every move. "So, did you call up the guy from yesterday?" Chris forgot all about the man from yesterday. "No, I forgot" Millie punched her arm playfully. "You can't let that tiger go." Chris shook her head, "Rather not." After putting Jolen down on a table far in the corner close to the shelf that led to the staff room, customers arrived. "I'll get it, you tuck your son" Millie said with a hand gesture leaving her to her son. It was almost lunch break and the same man from yesterday came in. He sat at the same table and looked at her and smirked." You didn't call?" He asked Chris when she had to take his order. "Uh- I'm sorry I was busy" He frowned. "So how bout tonight? I'll pick you up here at seven thirty" Chris grew silent. "Unless you have plans?" She didn't want to hurt his feelings," No it's fine." He smiled while leaving a five-dollar tip in the jar. "I'll see you tonight" He said in a mesmerizing voice. Chris watched him walk out the door while another guy walked in. He was the same black coated and sunglasses man. She turned her gaze away quickly; he didn't make her comfortable. Walking off to the table where Jolen watched movies on his mini DVD player. She ruffled his hair and went back to cleaning the counters. Working back at the register, Chris rung up many orders. Finally, the man with the sunglasses walked up to be rung. Chris looked around for someone to change spots for a little. Millie was taking and order and her husband was working in the back. "Dammit" She thought. Not looking straight at the man, she punched in his orders. "No small greeting like, Hi Jerish?" She heard the man say. No, it can't be? Was she hearing things or was her mental capacity finally giving out on her that her dreams were starting to become reality? Looking up she looked straight at his face. He removed his sunglasses and his Amber eyes looked straight at her as if she stood naked. "Hi Chris" He responded. "Hi Chris." He said. Chris couldn't move, as it felt as if time stood still. Even she still couldn't believe it after about a moment. It's him, it was really him, she screamed in her head. She wanted to reach over and touch his face. "Uh, Chris are you just gonna stand there?" Millie nudged her back. She shook her head and tried to stare at the register but her gaze wanted to stare at the figure in front of her. "Um what did you order?" He leaned his elbows on the counter and smiled at her. "Did you miss me?" His voice so arrogant and deep than before. It made shivers run up her spine. She looked back at Millie, "Hey what did he order?" Millie shrugged, "Ask him yourself.” "Sir may I ask what did you order?" She repeated. He looked straight at her, his eyes burning into hers. "Why won't you call me by my name?" Chris looked back at Millie, "Hey Mill can you take his order? I'm not feeling to good." When Millie nodded, she left her spot and left for the restroom. She walked in and looked into the mirror. Her heart was beating fast she took deep breaths not knowing how fast it was beating but it certainly did many. The door opened then closed, thinking it was Millie or a customer she threw water on her face. Once she got back up it the mirrors showed a different picture. "Why didn't you tell me we have a child?" Chris looked the other way. "He's not yours" She answered. "Who’s his father then?" She opened her mouth but closed it again. "A bastard who knocked me up then left" Chris looked in the reflection and watched Jerish when he looked away. "Why didn't you tell me? She frowned and closed her eyes, "What are you doing here?" Jerish took a step forward but she moved out of his grasp. "I wanted to see you" "Bullshit!" She shouted. "Chris listen to me" He said the guilt in him building up. She inhaled and exhaled furiously. "I waited for you, for the past three years, I believed you'd one day show up offering me a hand to help raise him." He did nothing. "Then I gave up, I thought-" She paused to sniff"-I thought to give up on you and find MY son a new father, one who'd love Jolen as his own because his father couldn't give him that." She felt the stream of tears roll down her cheeks. There were so much questions and answers she needed but her heart can't take this. He's standing right in front of her but she's to afraid to hold onto him to be turned back down and left alone on the empty bed. No, no more wanting him. She gave that up the moment she seen the yearning in Jolen's eyes. "Chris, did you ever consider my part?" He asked his voice quiet and soft. "Have you ever called back to me?" No. He never left anything for her to contact him with. "Jerish, did you know that you broke my heart?" He became quiet and didn't look at her. She looked at him and tried to see his face but her eyes were too misty. She's had enough. Leaving for the door, he grabbed her hand and pulled her back towards him. "Let me go" She cried. He didn't let go or anything. He pulled her to an embrace and he was so big yet warm. "Le-et me g-go" She sobbed as he held her close. "Chris" His words choked back into his throat. "Why did you leave?" She asked when he surely didn't let go. He can't tell her, he certainly couldn't. "I was afraid." He whispered into her ear. She stilled. "I was afraid to lose you." Chris felt her tears rising again. "You did lose me Jerish, you left and made me raise Jolen by myself." "I know." He said as his eyes held her gaze.
