Carl
Nora kept chattering throughout our drive to the airport about her trip, her meetings and the things she needed to do before coming back, but I was absentminded. I kept one hand on the steering wheel and the other rest near the gearshift.
I nodded when necessary, but my mind was back at the house. I was thinking about Riley, about last night, and the things she had said to me after Nora went to bed.
I hated myself for thinking about that stubborn, infuriating girl who had somehow managed to interrupt every private moment I have tried to have.
How did I let her occupy my thoughts like this? I was meant to watch over her, I am supposed to be her temporary guardian, so what am I doing?
I exhaled and tightened my grip on the wheel.
I was with Nora, I love Nora, I am engaged to Nora and we should be married in two months, what was I doing to myself? Why can’t I control my thoughts? Why was I losing this battle between my mind and heart?
“She really kept you busy, didn’t she?” Nora’s voice interrupted my thought and I blinked, glancing briefly at her.
“Who?” I wasn’t listening to her for a while so I didn’t know who she was talking about.
“Your best friend’s daughter, Riley.” She said with a smile.
I blinked, taken aback, I huffed and looked away from her. “She’s a handful, and I’m sure she also kept you busy, sorry about last night, you look exhausted this morning because she kept you awake all night.”
Nora shook her head. “It’s fine, I’m more concerned about you since you have to be with her until her parents return.” She slowly reached my hand and touched it slowly. “Is it difficult taking care of her?”
I thought about it for a second. It shouldn’t be difficult since she wasn’t a kid anymore, but Riley was making it difficult for me. Her constant flirting, the way she had brought a boy home and had him touch her, the way she had m*********d with my shirt, how she had stretched her arms toward me asking me to carry her, and the day we were both rain-soaked and almost shared a kiss.
I clenched my jaw. “Yeah,” I muttered honestly. “You could say that.”
Nora chuckled softly unaware of my feelings and how much I struggle to fight it. “Well, at least it’s only temporary. When are her parents coming back?”
“Next week,” I answered, I had spoken to her father and he told me they should round up the project by then and return. “Or a few more days,” I shrugged.
“You can survive that.” She repeated sympathetically, resting her head on my shoulder and caressing my arms tenderly.
I forced a laugh. “I’ll try.” I said, but my chest clenched, I wasn’t sure how long I could hold this desires.
When we arrived at the airport, I got out and help her with her luggage. Inside the terminal, Nora turned to me near security and leaned in closely.
“You’ll miss me.” She tilted her head with a smile playing across her lips.
I smirked. “Maybe,” I teased.
She gasped dramatically and smacked my chest lightly. “Maybe?”
I laughed and slowly pulled her into my arms, she wrapped her arm around my neck and hugged me back.
“Take care of yourself.” She whispered as she leaned back, kissing me softly.
“You too.” I muttered against her lips and she pulled back to study my face.
“You know..” she grinned mischievously. “When I come back, maybe I should move in for a bit and help you.”
I frowned slightly. “Help me?”
“With her,” she teased. “I could co-parent her with you.”
I chuckled and shook my head. “That might actually be a good idea.” Nora’s smile widened. “But, I’d have to bring it up to her first.” I added.
Nora laughed. “Of course, we need her approval.” She kissed me one last time. “Don’t work too hard.” I nodded as she turned and walked toward security.
I watched Nora until she disappeared into the crowd, I thought her image would last in my mind, but the second she was gone, Riley’s thought filled my thought again.
“Damn it!” I cursed under my breath turned to leave the airport. To get rid of thoughts about Riley, I need to focus on paperwork at the office.
Yet each time I took a break, Riley’s words repeat in my head on how she wishes the marriage with Nora wouldn’t work.
I scrubbed a hand over my face. What the hell is wrong with me?
“Carl she is your best friend’s daughter, someone you are supposed to protect not think about.” I yelled at myself and leaned back hard on my chair, but her voice echoed in my head.
Carry me to bed too. Her arms spread wide, her little smile.
My jaw tightened. Riley was messing with me and the worst part is I was starting to realize I was losing the fight in my own head.
I squeezed my eyes shut. Three more days, let’s hold back for three more days.
I gathered my stuff and turned off my computer as I left the office. I stopped at the mall to get some grocery, I still had to make dinner for us. I was scared that she hadn’t been eating much lately.
When I drove back home, I pulled my car into the parking lot and turned off the engine, glancing toward the window, I noticed the lights were turned on, Riley must be home now, but I sat still in the car for a few minutes.
What if I walk in there to find her dressed in something seductive? What if I can’t hold my desires? I couldn’t even spend a proper night with Nora to get rid of these desire because of Riley.
She knew what she was doing? She wanted me for herself, she wanted to seduce me as she had started multiple times, I can’t let her win, I can’t let myself fall at her mercy.
