Riley
I didn’t think before throwing the next question to her.
“Do you think Carl had changed since you first met?” I asked.
I wanted to know if Carl gives he the silent treatment, if he cared less for her now that I was here, if he barely calls her, if he barely made time to hang out with her, I just want her to say he had become cold and distant. I needed to know if my plan to seduce Carl was working.
“No, he hasn’t changed.” Nora answered with surprising patience, holding out a yellow dress to me. “This would be perfect for you.” She said.
I looked at the yellow dress in anger. I had also thought of wearing this one, this was the dress I had picked out and she likes it too, but would Carl love me in it?
“You ask a lot of questions,” Nora added, finally amused.
I looked at her bright smile, she look stunning even dressed with just her nightwear.
Should I dress completely like Nora? Should I come into Carl’s room unannounced? Should I kiss him abruptly in front of Nora?
“I’m just curious.” I answered and turned away, but caught Carl standing next to my door, arms crossed.
“Riley.”
I let out a soft sigh. “Yes.”
“Go to bed.” He instructed me.
He looked impatient to get on bed with Nora, is that how much he craves her? Now he was dismissing me.
I scoffed. “I’m talking to Nora.”
Nora smiled innocently. “I don’t mind, Carl.” She said sweetly.
Carl gave her a look and she raised both hands.
“I really don’t.”
Another hour passed and eventually, Nora’s energy started to fade. I bombarded her with questions as I talked about what I wanted for my birthday party, asking her to help me chose perfect outfit on the internet.
Her word blurred together and I glanced at her to see her eyes closing, but she forced them open.
“You’re falling asleep.”
“I’m not.” Nora rubbed her tired eyes.
“You yawned mid-sentence.” I pointed out.
Nora blinked slowly.
Claire stood up gently. “I’m fine.”
I stood up, glancing at the time, it was already past midnight. “Come on, it’s late, you have a flight to catch in few hours.”
Nora rubbed her eyes and nodded. “You’re right.”
As we left my room, Carl stepped forward and quickly picked Nora up into his arms, her face flushed, and my jaw tightened.
“I will take you to bed.” He told Nora softly and shot me a glare, she was already half asleep in his arms.
I wanted to be angry, seeing this infuriated me, it made me jealous, but again, I had succeeded, because Nora was too tired for anything to happen.
“Goodnight.” I said with a smile, pausing at the door, Nora barely mumbled back.
I watched quietly from the hallway as Carl lay her down and pulled the quilt over her shoulder and Nora drifted to sleep.
Carl’s gaze darted to the door and I leaned on it, stretching my pretty leg with victorious smile, I looked like the villain in Carl and Nora’s novel, but Nora was the villain in mine.
Carl strolled to the door, his long legs covered in black trousers. “Now you should go to bed.” His voice was low, but dangerously seductive.
I spread my arms wide. “Carry me to bed too.” I blinked cutely.
Carl immediately glanced back at Nora who didn’t even move, then back to me. “Riley…”
“Did something change?” I raised my brow. “You usually carried me to bed when I was a kid, so pick me up into your arms.” I bit my lower lips.
Carl narrowed his eyes. “Not funny, Riley, not funny…”
“I never wanted it to be.” I looked at him dead serious now. “I don’t want her here, at least until I’m gone.”
“Nora is my fiancée.” He spelt it out to me but I scoffed.
“You don’t have to say it out loud, Carl.” I glanced over his shoulder at Nora and then back at him. “I wish the marriage doesn’t hold.” I said with clenched jaw.
Her parted his lips to speak, but I was already walking to my room, I had told him what I had constantly in my mind, although I wanted him to love me and crave only me, still he seem to love Nora more.
I closed my room door and lay on the bed. i yawned, tired as well, I had tried my best to hold my sleep until Nora gave in first.
I smiled at myself. I pulled tonight off, now I just have to make Carl crave me, if he’s s*x starved, I will give him my body, and then I’ll still his heart.
I stretched in my bed as I stirred awake, the morning light filtered through my curtains and I woke slowly.
The memory of last night rushed back, and my eyes snapped open.
I sat up quickly, my heart raced as I climbed out of bed. “s**t! I’ve overslept.” I cursed at myself and rushed out of my room barefoot.
I reached the stairs just in time to see Carl and Nora near the front door. Nora was slipping on her coat and Carl held a set of car keys.
Nora turned when she heard my footsteps. “Good morning,” she smiled brightly at me.
I stopped halfway, she looked so happy, did something already happen between them while I was asleep?
“You’re leaving?” I asked, stopping halfway down the stairs.
“Yes,” Nora said warmly. “I have to catch my flight.” She adjusted her bag on her shoulder.”Carl’s driving me to the airport.”
Carl glanced up at me briefly. “Morning,” he said. I stared at him, but I can’t read the expression on his face, I can’t tell if he was happy or angry.
I stared at them, even with my effort last night, they still looked perfectly happy with each other.
Nora walked toward the door, then paused and looked back. “It was really nice talking to you, Riley.”
“You too,” I said like an automatic robot.
Carl opened the door for Nora and she turned with a playful grin. “Take care of the house while your parents are away.” She added playfully, but it felt like rubbing salt to my wound.
As the door shut behind them leaving me in the quiet apartment, I ran my hand through my hair.
“She’s a vixen!” I clenched both hand to my side.
