Chapter 18

Riley Nora blinked. “Is that a problem?” she asked me. My brains scrambled for an excuse. “Well… I just thought…” I paused, searching for the right word before quickly continuing. “Since you’re a guest and everything… maybe you’d be more comfortable in my room.” Both Carl and Nora stared at me. “Your room?” they said at once. I nodded. “Yes, it’s bigger.” I said quickly. That was a lie and everyone knows. Carl scoffed, turning away from me, and Nora seem not to take me seriously either. Immediately, I searched for another proper excuse. “And we could, you know… talk.” I pointed at Nora, and back to myself. Nora looked at me amused. “You want a girl’s night?” I clapped my hand, eyes glistening. “Exactly.” smiles spread through my lips. Carl’s brows slowly pulled together, but I ignored him. Nora glanced between us, clearly trying to read the situation, but she laughed softly. “That’s sweet, Riley, but I actually planned on spending time with my fiancé tonight.” My smiles disappeared instantly. “Right.” I frowned. Nora was a fox, if she knew she wouldn’t agree to the girl’s night then why did she make the suggestion and even played along. Nora tilted her head. “I appreciate the offer though.” I clenched my fork, I still can’t get rid of the flashback of the position I saw them in, on the first day of my arrival. I wasn’t going to give up. “Well,” I said softly. “You must be exhausted from travelling. You probably shouldn’t stay up too late.” Nora chuckled. “Are you trying to give me a bedtime?” “Just looking out for you,” I forced a smile, while cursing her in my mind. Who was I fooling? I wasn’t looking out for her, I don’t even care about her, I just didn’t want her touching Carl, I didn’t even want her here. Carl leaned back in his chair slowly. “Riley.” “Yes?” I glanced at him. “Stop.” He said coldly. “I’m not doing anything.” I shrugged. I didn’t like how he looked at me, it only made me want to try out another approach. I turned to Nora. “You must be jet-lagged, didn’t you come straight from the airport? You should have probably rest in a guest room, it’s quieter.” Nora laughed again. “I’m not jet-lagged.” “Well maybe you will be.” “Riley, that’s enough.” Carl’s voice dropped slightly and I faced him with a frown, he held my gaze as tension pass between us for a moment. Nora broke it with another soft laugh. “You two argue like siblings.” “We are not siblings.” I answered without hesitation. Carl is the man I love, he is the man I want to hug so tight, he is the man I don’t want to share with anyone, the one I wanted to keep for myself and myself alone! I wanted to scream it out for Nora to hear, but I can’t get myself to say anything. I had lost appetite. Carl doesn’t want anything to do with me, and now Nora is here, he might as well spend the whole night wrapped in her arms. I got to my feet. “Thanks for the meal, I’m going to sleep now.” I glanced at Carl who rubbed his tired forehead. “Riley…” I turned around and went upstairs before he would say anything. I paced around my room in thought, I can’t let Nora spend the night with Carl. If she was determined to stay in his room, then fine. But I won’t make it easy for them to do anything. I checked the time, it was past nine in the evening, I had heard Carl’s door shut, and I knew it was the perfect time to escalate my efforts. I left my room and walked to Carl’s room, I didn’t care what they might be doing at the time, I knocked and Carl opened the door after a few minutes. “Riley, aren’t you asleep?” He asked, but I looked past his shoulder. Nora had just walked out of the shower and was dressed in a pink nightwear, her hair were tied up and she was about getting on the bed. “I need to speak to Nora.” I told him. Carl let out a frustrated sigh. “Riley, can you just…” I brushed past him before he could finish. “Nora, I need your help.” I said, putting up a desperate face. Nora glanced at Carl, then back at me. “With what?” she walked closer. “There is a school event tomorrow, and I’m having troubles picking out the right outfit, since you’re here, and a lady just like me, why not help me pick the right outfit.” I blinked cutely. I saw in her eyes that she wanted to say no, but would a lady who loves Carl say no to someone Carl was asked to look after? The answer was no. And somehow, Nora left the room with me to my room to assist me. “This would look good for the event you told me about.” Nora said, holding out a pink off shoulder dress. “Um… I really don’t like pink, and a lot of girl from school would be dressed with that color, how about choosing something else.” I told her, pointing toward my closet. We have been on this for an hour now, each clothe she brought I said no to it, my eyes glancing from the clock to her, I wish Carl will be asleep before she goes back into the room. “Okay.” Nora let out a tired sigh and turned to the closet again. “Have you dated someone in college?” I asked the question out of the blue and Nora glanced at me. “What?” I flashed a smile. “You look very pretty and elegant, I’m sure there were lots of male asking you to date them.” I flattered her. “Yes, but that was in the past, I getting married to Carl now, and he’s the love of my life.” Nora answered simply and turned to my closet again. I curled my hand into fist, she was wrong, if Carl was the love of her life then she wouldn’t have date anyone in her past. I have been in love with Carl since I was twelve, so I should have him and not her.
