CHAPTER 2 – The Job

2204 Words
Lexi’s POV Rushing to meet Dad, I brisk-walked through the pack grounds to the main building. Actually, we lived in two places and moved between them when necessary. The first one was our pack house and pack territory which was located far away from the main town and humans. It was surrounded by thick green forests and blue rivers, making it the perfect place for wolves. On the other hand, our second place was our security firm which was located in town. It was the side of us that we displayed to humans. Our security firm provided personal bodyguards tailored to our client’s requirements and we generally got paid well, especially by our rich clients. Obviously, before we assigned our wolves as bodyguards, we made sure to train them very well not to release their wolves no matter what because humans didn’t know that we existed. We were part of the Guardian Warrior Pack and warrior genes flowed in our blood for generations. Hence, our wolves couldn’t be pissed off easily like rogues or other wolf packs, but when they do come out and if someone messes with them, then that person should start praying because no one could save them from the wolves of the Guardian Warrior Pack. Dad always strived to protect the security firm’s name and made sure there weren’t any unwanted issues, so both of us would personally train the selected bodyguards carefully. We carried out special activities to piss them off to the maximum and then coached them on how to control their wolves to stop them from releasing. Brian was my elder brother and he was in charge of handling all pack duties. As for me, Dad wanted me to handle the security firm even though I personally loved to involve myself in pack duties. Whenever I was at the packhouse, I would check up on every member of the pack and I would walk around the pack territory until they went to sleep. I didn’t have a particular best friend, but I was friendly with everyone in the pack. I was doing my usual rounds of the packhouse territory when Dad mind-linked me. Pushing the heavy doors, I barged into Dad’s office which was located on the third floor of our building. “Dad, I am here. Why is my handsome dad still awake after such a hectic day of training a new warrior?” “Oh! Lex, there you are! Well, you know how much I would love to sleep next to your beautiful mom, but I just got a call from one of my clients telling me that the Stark family just contacted him and asked for my phone number,” Dad said as he leaned his six feet and three inches’ body back against his office chair until even the chair cried when it had to support his weight. Despite what Dad told me, I just stood there casually as I chewed the gum in my mouth and slid my hands into my leather jacket pockets. Shocked by my reaction, Dad shot me a surprised look. “Don’t you know who the Starks are, Lexi? By the look of your calm behavior, it seems like you have never heard of them,” he replied with a slight grumble in his voice. Shrugging my shoulders, I sighed. “Dad, you know that I am not very aware of the outside world and especially about humans. I am more focused on my pack and—” “Well, I’ll tell you, Lex. Take a seat.” Dad pointed to the chair opposite his table after cutting me off mid-sentence before I could start talking about the pack. Letting out a sharp exhale, I reluctantly pulled out the chair and took a seat in front of his office table. “Lex, to put it simply, the Starks are billionaires. No one knows their actual net worth and I believe even they don’t know how rich they are. They are involved in a lot of business in various different industries that bring them abundant profit. In fact, I think even the government owes them a lot of debts.” Dad sighed and took a sip out of his glass of water. “So, what do they want from us?” I asked casually, unaware of the importance of the situation. Dad knew very well that I was eager to involve myself in pack duties and nothing else was important to me. It was not that I was greedy for the Alpha title because I knew that if the Alpha had a son, the son must hold the title, and to be honest, I wasn’t in any competition with Brian. He was my only brother and we both loved each other. Dad leaned forward against the table. “The personal manager of Mr. Gerard Stark reached out to me about an hour ago and informed me that they need a personal bodyguard for their young master, Mr. Chris Stark. He is the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Stark which makes him the sole heir of all the Stark wealth.” “Dad, I have never seen you so interested in someone’s money like this before. Why are you so enthusiastic about this client?” I asked, gently rubbing my chin. Dad let out a sharp exhale and shook his head. “Lex, it’s not that I am greedy for their gold. I’m just trying to show you the importance of the client we are going to deal with and—” “Hold on. Dad, are you seriously going to take this contract? I mean, we provide guards to clients and even some rich clients, but these people are out of our capacity, Dad. If anything happens to the client, you know that World War III will erupt and they will erase us from the earth. Our pack name will only be mentioned and heard of in bedtime stories just like the Silver Sword pack. Our fate will be sealed—” “Lex, take a breath. That is why I called you here at this time of the night. The depth and the weight of this matter are too heavy, but I don’t want to let this opportunity go,” he said. “Dad, I suggest you let this go. There’s nothing for us to lose even if this opportunity slips away from us. Oh, and why the hell do these Starks want our services? They can hire bodyguards from the international market that have the latest technology and techniques,” I retorted with my facts. “Yes, Lex, I know you have a point, but the thing is that we need more financial support because it is difficult to maintain a wolf pack with a headcount of five hundred wolves. So, I can’t let this opportunity go. If we serve them well, we will be rewarded with an abundant amount that we can’t even count, Lex. That is why I called you here even though it’s almost midnight,” Dad explained. Dad had a point too. It was not easy to handle and maintain a big pack. Being the Alpha family, it was our responsibility and burden to carry until we died. We spent thousands of dollars per month on food alone because wolves eat more than humans. It was not that the pack members were a burden to us, the facts just backed up Dad’s decision. “Dad, I agree with you, but the risks are higher than the benefits. What if a human does something to piss off our wolves and they cross the limit?” I questioned. “Yes, but I will take this risk. If anything happens, I am ready to face them and I am not afraid of how my knight in shining armor is going to deal with them,” Dad replied before standing up and walking toward me. My eyes widened when the final words of his sentence reached my ears. He always called me his knight in shining armor. Does he mean that I am the one going to deal with them? “Wait, do you mean….” I pointed my index finger towards my chest as my forehead furrowed and my face contorted into a questioning look. Raising my head, I looked at the tall Alpha towering over me. He pressed his lips together into a tight smile and nodded his head in acknowledgment. Immediately, I jerked up from the chair like something had just shoved into my tiny a*s. “Dad, no! No way! I won’t have anything to do with this client and I advise you to forget about this contract as well. I have a bad feeling that we will get into a big problem,” I insisted as I enlarged my eyes and raised my eyebrows. Dad looked at my serious face for a while and retreated back to his seat. “Lexi, calm down, Sweetheart. Let’s talk about this,” Dad comforted. His calm tone was enough to make me drag my a*s back to the chair and glue myself on it. “Dad, I know we need a lot of financial support, but–” “Lexi, I know that you are very responsible. That is why I handed over the security firm to your care. Taking care of the pack and doing all the pack duties that an Alpha family heir has to do is important, but dealing with the outside world and especially with humans is the most responsible thing to do based on my experience. Yes, I am not assigning you any pack duties, but that doesn’t mean I think you are not capable enough to handle the pack. It’s just that I feel you as my daughter, the Alpha’s daughter, is the right person to handle this duty, My Love. That is why you are my knight in shining armor,” Dad expressed. His words were calm and delicate, but the depth of them made my breath hitch in my chest. Sighing deeply, I looked down and allowed silence to rule between us. After a few seconds, I raised my head to meet Dad’s laser-focused eyes. “I will consider this also as a pack duty, Dad. If by handling this contract I am helping my pack to be more financially stable, I will do it, Dad.” My voice filled with determination. I knew that I could easily manage rich rats, but I was still curious about what the rich junior Stark looked like. Is he just another spoiled brat using his rich dad’s money, a serious businessman, or a playboy? “That’s my girl! I knew that you will take up any challenge that comes your way, Lexi!” Dad jumped out from his chair, walked over to me, and pulled me up from the chair I was sitting in. Wrapping his muscular Alpha arms around me, he hugged me and exhaled. No matter how old he was, he was still strong. After hugging him back, I broke away from him. “So, Dad, how many bodyguards do they want? I need at least two weeks to train a few warriors and discipline them.” “They requested four bodyguards, but we don’t have that much time, Lex. They asked me to send the bodyguard tomorrow,” Dad replied. My jaw dropped at his words. “What?! That’s not possible, Dad! You know how important and dangerous this client is, so we have to be extra cautious. No, no! Tell them that we need more time, or else ask them to find another company.” I was enraged and my voice was firm because I didn’t want to take risks. The two weeks were extremely necessary and I thought that Dad knew that. So, how can he agree to this ridiculous deal? Dad exhaled and shook his head. “Lex, I can’t. I have already promised them that I will send my people tomorrow.” Pinching the bridge of my nose in frustration, I huffed a long disappointed sigh and rested my arms on the sides of my waist. “Are you for real, Dad? Can you show me at least one wolf who is ready to go tomorrow?” I challenged him with a stern look. “You!” Dad exclaimed and pointed at me. My eyes narrowed at him with annoyance but when I finally understood that I couldn’t win over my dad, I gave up. “Of course, I’m your knight in shining armor.” “That’s my baby girl! Here is the file about the client, it has all the details you will need. Call or text me if you need any clarification.” Dad passed me a blue plastic file. Accepting the file, I sighed and prepared to head toward the door. “Good night, Dad!” “Oh! There is something I forgot to tell you, Lexi. It’s the most important thing of all,” he said. Leaving my hand on the door handle, I turned around to face him with a questioning look. “What is it, Dad?” “Your client, Mr. Chris Stark, is disabled!”
