“I shall not be long. I have a lot to tell you!”
Minerva drew in her breath.
She wondered what could have happened now.
She waited and Tony came back to kiss her on the cheek as he said,
“I had a chance to come and see you, and, what do you think? The house party have all left!”
Minerva stared at him.
“Left?”
“I can understand it, in a way,” Tony informed her, “because the Ambassador of Spain turned up last night and he and his wife left before breakfast.”
Minerva did not speak.
She told herself that she must try to look surprised as Tony went on,
“It was a bit of a shock when His Excellency suddenly appeared and, when we heard this morning that they were gone before eight o’clock, everybody was wondering what would happen next.”
