1: Devil And Deep Blue Sea
Liora's POV
“Silly girl!”
The pot of hot sauce slams on me as Luna Lily growls. The thick red liquid burns my skin. I scream, my eyes poking out, watching my white skin turn red with blisters.
“Shut up.” She groans, keeping her classy poise.
My hand covers my mouth, killing my cry in a throaty sob. I'm burning up. Smelling my burning skin makes me nauseous.
“Just a little chili, not too salty… How hard is that to grasp?” She sucks her teeth and sighs. “This cost so much, you know. You're not allowed to waste resources.” She looks at the pot with pity, and me, with disdain. “It's added to your debt.”
I whimper, holding back my tears.
“Set the dining room in thirty minutes, don't make us wait for a second.”
I wince and nod. All I need right now is to soak in a bath of icy water.
She flaps her glamorous purple dress and walks away from the kitchen.
Once she leaves, I rush to the sink and turn on the tap. I scoop water and splash it on my body, repeating until the cool sensation drowns out the burning one. I put my arm under the running faucet, letting it rush over my body.
Three years ago, my dad was framed for funds embezzlement and got demoted from being Blackridge's Beta. Unable to pay his debts, I was sold to the pack house as a slave.
“Hurry!”
Luna's voice snaps me out of my head.
Oh, no! I barely have twenty minutes more. I slap the tap shut, rush back to the table, and hurriedly chop the veggies. While frying the minced beef and chopped veggies, I parboil the pasta.
Five minutes more.
My hands are shaky. A minute delay equals one lash of the horsewhip. My skin has suffered enough for the day.
I take out ripe mangoes from the freezer compartment. The cold sucks into my skin, freezing me up. I slice it in the blender, throw in berries, coconut, and pineapple, then blend the tropical mix.
Time's up!
Oh, s**t!
I rush back to the pasta, almost tumbling over. I throw in the mix and sprinkle ingredients with care. The food is already set. I serve it in a big bowl, take the grilled turkey out of the oven, and run out of the kitchen.
“Slave girl?” Luna Lily groans. She eyes me when I come into view.
She and the alpha, Grey Preston, are seated at the table. He looks at me, trying to figure out my messy look. Just then, footsteps and a familiar humming interrupt him.
It's Octavius, their only child and future alpha of our pack. He's my worst nightmare. I finish serving and try to flee when he grabs my Auburn hair..
“Not so fast, Lio-rat.” His baritone blasts in mockery. He pulls me closer, his eyes narrow when they see my dirty body. “Is this… sweat?”
“No. No.” I stutter, pressing my lips to hold back from groaning. My scalp is hurting from the pull. “Water.”
He's already set for college, dressed in a black and white checkered vest that bares his fine tatted biceps, and faded pants. His jet-black hair is thrown in a reckless wave.
“Set my box, I don't have all day.”
I nod, biting my lips to subside the pain on my scalp. When he lets me go, I rush to safety, shutting the kitchen door to take a deep breath.
Tears sting my eyes. Hell, that's my entire life in summary.
Expelling air, I go to the blender and finish off making the fresh tropical juice. Octavius being a picky eater with a reactive immune system, doesn't eat at the school's cafeteria. I pack his box, pour the squeezed mixture into a glass jug, and return to the table.
“Dear, your graduation is in three weeks, right?” Luna Lily takes a bite. “Do you need anything special?”
Octavius shrugs. “A yacht, perhaps.”
“Hmm… interesting.” His dad chuckles, and his old rusty voice rumbles. “Just that? Done.” He adds when his son nods.
“Besides, your coronation is a day after.” His mother continues. “What about your mate? Your're twenty-one son, don't tell me you haven't seen her yet.”
I pick up Octavius's glass and start pouring when I feel his eyes on me. Slowly, I look up to meet his gaze. He locks me in a fierce grip.
“What if she's Liora, innocent, but the daughter of a traitor?” He plays with his food.
My breath stiffens in my throat. I swallow dryly, trying to act normal but my pounding heart isn't letting me. I feel the atmosphere go tensed too.
“Son?!” His mum scolds. “Is this some sort of sick joke?" She drops her cutlery. "The moon goddess isn't dumb to make such a disgusting match."
"Darling, it's unheard of for an alpha and omega." The alpha reaches to caress her hand. "Relax, he's just being a naughty boy."
She rolls her eyes dramatically. "Besides, there's nothing innocent about this disgusting slave." She flips her hair and resumes eating.
“What if?” He repeats, voice calm as the ocean, eyes locked with mine.
“Reject her.”
For some weird reason, Luna Lilly's words hit me like a sword, piercing my heart and ripping it into shreds.
“Lio-rat!”
Octavius's sharp tone coupled with Luna Lilly's fist banging the table snaps me back to reality.
I look down to see that I'm still pouring juice into the overly filled glass, causing the thick fluid to spill.
“I… I'm sorry… It's…” I stutter. I reach to grab the napkin and Octavius grabs my wrist in a firm grip.
A flicker of electricity jolts through me, with heat pooling beneath his touch. Our eyes lock and my lips part in confusion. My heart is beating almost deafeningly.
His charming look slowly gets replaced with anger. The place stings, like I'm going to get it amputated. I see my skin go pale white beneath his grip.
“Mop it with your shirt.” His lips curl in a smirk.
I blink, holding back tears. I won't give him the satisfaction of seeing me break. As if he wants me to burn, he clasps my wrist harder.
“Go on, clean your mess.” Luna Lily urges impatiently.
I nod and pull away from his grip. I pull the hem of my shirt on the table and wipe the mess, soaking my shirt up with the puree. Done, I walk into the kitchen and shut the door.
Oddly, my heart is still beating, though faintly, but loud enough. I pull my wrist upward, eyes tracing the spot he had touched.
‘Jerk!’ I cuss in my head. ‘Stupid and ugly Octopus!’ I groan and imagine punching his face. It's the only way I get him to be at my mercy.
Without doubt, I know his rule will be my death… I need to escape the pack house before his coronation.
It’s impossible… But it's the only way out.
