Chapter One - Lifetime Debt
Miranda's POV: The deep, vibrating sound of heavy vehicles, sounds of construction, and a lively street building gradually, a beginning of a new day, world awakens. This supposed to be another beautiful morning I had wished but no—It was the debit alert from the hospital that woke me up leaving my account balance on red. My grandma still needs to maintain her eyes with drugs, so they won't have to remove the eyes completely. Afterall, she lost her eyes due to a financial constraints. I stand up to get prepared for work just when I'm about leaving the house, my phone buzzed in my bag, I picked it up looking at the screen, the unknown number flashed across the screen followed by a strange message. The message reads: "If you don't want to loose your job, meet me at your office in the next five minutes." My heart stopped. This is not the time I should be threatened with my job —the only means of survival. The weight of the words hit me like a ton of bricks. I left home in a hurry without checking up on grandma while scrolling through my phone to check the number very well, I blinked twice—the Mario club. The loan shark club my parents had borrowed money from just for them to die and leave me in debt. But, what exactly are they doing in my office? Why are they at my work place? Why do I have to be the one suffering for this? My head is spinning. It is surreal. I'm going to loose my job if my boss finds out. I blurted out of the cab moving fast towards the elevator, my feet restlessly tapping the polished hard floor, the elevator door dings open and I run out swiftly. I look around panicking to locate them just when my phone rings. "Miss Miranda, you have some visitors waiting for you here" The receptionist called. What the hell?! My frowns deepens, the call cut before I could reply. At the reception?? These guys are here to ruin me! My heart beating faster. I rush down to the reception with speed, four hefty men in black suits chit chatting, laughing and enjoying their stay by causing nuisance. One of which has a cigarette hanged at the back of his right ear, two of them with a big scar each on their forehead, the last man wearing a big black hat with absolutely off shoe—green colour sneakers. Like, who dresses like this again? I scoff. I snap out of my thought immediately I move closer. Silence creeps in and my heart pounds like a jackhammer. "Please can we leave this place to..." I started but got interrupted by his hurried words "look here!" he started. "Do you think we are here to play?" He moved closer, few inches to my face. "Do you want to die as a coward like your parents did?" A taunting smirk spread across his face. My heart stopped. I froze. "The last thing you told me last time was that the money will be sent to my account the following day, so, where is my money?!!" He yelled loudly that caught the attention of most of the people passing by. I tried to mutter a statement—"please this is a comp...", entangling my shaky fingers together... "Shut up!", he said sharply, his voice cutting through my words. He interrupted me again, cutting me off. "Nobody, I repeat, nobody can play a winning game with me", he grips his hand tightly and releases it with a sigh, making an effort to subdue his anger. "Don't ever think that you can run away without paying my money just like your parents did" He glares at me angrily. "If you make an attempt, I will make sure I kill you before you kill yourself" My palms are sweating and shaking. "Your grandmother must be waiting for you this evening, make sure you don't come late". His voice dropping to a near—he whisper to my ear using his hand to keep my flying hair in one place. My brows furrowed in confusion. Like, what is he planning to do with my grandmother? why my grandmother? I couldn't help but to ask myself questions. " Fine girl like you, wasting away". I lean inwardly to avoid his hand rubbing around my face. "I bet you know what to do, meet me at the address I gave you the last time, the same hotel and room number." His gaze locked onto mine, his voice lower than usual" Just when he steps back a little bit " oh, I think that's your boss" A sly frown etched on the corner of his face. What!? My boss must not be here this time, this is a wrong timing. I shiver in fear, a sheen of sweat covering my brow, I nervously turn back just to lock eyes with my boss looking at me with confusion spread across his face. "Don't you think I should inform him about your family disaster? How your parent borrowed money from me and killed themselves just because they don't want to pay me back?" He smirked jeeringly. My brows are still frowned, panicking and confused. My eyes fixed on my boss as he moves closer, a lumps forms in my throat. "Guys, let's go" "we are done for now" Oh, thankfully!! I release a sigh. A sense of releif but my stomach twisted with a mix of fear and fury. I started hearing the clinking of their steps withdraw from the place —they were leaving. I couldn't move until my boss met me on the spot, He shot a deadly glance at me without saying anything as he walked away. I kept on looking at his figure, holding in his right hand a briefcase I must collect as his secretary. But guess who is looking and watching him till he's out of sight? It's me! *** I nervously bit my lips as I stared at the intercom on the table inside my office, fearfully waiting for my boss to summon me. I spin my chair on its axis in my little office with a sigh of exasperation. I am damn sacred Scared of my boss. I close my eyes, running my fingers through my hair in a repetitive motion and murmuring to myself. Sacred of what he's going to do, Is he going to fire me? How will I survive without this salary this period? How do I take care of grandma? How do I pay the debt, house rent...endless list!. I'm overwhelmed, frustrated and tired. What did I do exactly for my parents to leave such a terrible inheritance for me!? "Hello" , his deep voice rumbled through the intercom, filling the room, jolted me back to reality. "Yes si...", he interrupted before I could complete my statement. "Meet me in my office now", his voice cuts through the air with sharp instructions.
