Prologue
Lethe gazed at the azure sky, its beauty captivating to behold, never tiring to look at even if you spend the whole day doing so.
Suddenly, Lethe pondered whether she should continue with her plan, her gaze fixed on the vast ocean below her.
"Is it deep?" she wondered silently.
"Please, Miss, don't jump!" a man pleaded worriedly, his cellphone focused on her.
"He's probably recording me," Lethe noticed, observing others on the San Juanico Bridge doing the same. She felt like an instant celebrity, surrounded by people watching her, but instead of feeling pleased, Lethe felt even more despondent.
"Why do you notice me only now, when I'm ready to disappear?" she whispered to herself. "Hypocrites."
She heard sirens, signaling the arrival of the police.
"Miss, let's talk about whatever problem you're facing," a policeman said to Lethe, edging closer to her.
"Don't come near," Lethe ordered the policeman. "I'll jump," she threatened, causing the policeman to step back with his hands raised.
"Please, leave that spot! Don't create a scene there," shouted someone from the crowd, but Lethe didn't care who said it.
"Don't listen to them. I'm here, we'll wait until you're okay, then we'll talk," the policeman said again.
Ignoring the policeman's words, Lethe gazed at the beautiful sky.
"Maybe this is it," she smiled to herself before looking at the policeman.
"Please take care of my dog," she said with a smile before stepping away from the edge. She heard people shouting because of what she did.
She closed her eyes and waited for her fall, feeling a quick grab on her arm.
"You?!," she exclaimed in annoyance as the policeman held her arm.
"You're really losing it," he shouted at her.
"Yeah, that's why I'm laughing," Lethe replied, struggling against his grip, still looking at her feet.
"f**k! Dizzy, now, girl?!" she cursed herself mentally.
Instead of being afraid, Lethe quickly grabbed the man's hand and forcefully removed it.
"Don't?!" he shouted at her. "Help me," he pleaded with his companions.
"Let go," she pressed her nails into his hand, causing him to release her. In an instant, she swiftly plunged downward.
"s**t!," the man cursed before jumping after her.
"What is he doing?," Lethe wondered in shock, closing her eyes as she felt the impact of hitting the water.
Gradually, the water engulfed her downward, and all Lethe could feel now was the pain in her body.
"Is this it?" she asked herself in her mind, her vision blurring.
It didn't take long for her lungs to run out of air, her vision blurred rapidly, and her chest tightened.
"Maybe this is really it," even though her vision was blurred, she still saw the policeman swimming quickly towards her direction.
"I remember you," she smiled in her mind before finally losing her breath. The policeman quickly brought Lethe to the shore upon reaching her.
"What?," one of his fellow policemen asked as the policeman laid Lethe down and began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
"What are you waiting for? Call an ambulance?!" he shouted to the people around as he continued to pump Lethe's chest.
One of his colleagues touched his shoulder.
"Enough, she's gone," he restrained him.
"She's not dead yet, she's still alive, call an ambulance!" the policeman shouted angrily, but he noticed people starting to disperse. He suddenly sat down on the ground, staring at Lethe's lifeless body.
"No," he couldn't believe that the woman he had always watched over because of her multiple suicide attempts had finally passed away.
