Chapter 9: The Enemy Within

264 Words
The night at the desert outpost was eerily calm. The team had set up a temporary base inside the ruins of an old fortress. A single lantern flickered in the wind, casting long shadows on the cracked stone walls. Liam sat alone, cleaning his sidearm. His mind replayed every moment from the ambush. Too clean. Too precise. Whoever orchestrated it knew their movements — their codes. “You haven’t slept,” Amelia’s voice broke the silence. She stepped closer, wearing a light tactical jacket, her hair tied back, eyes sharp but tired. “Neither have you,” Liam replied, not looking up. She hesitated before handing him a small data chip. “This was inside the black box. I decrypted part of it — it contains internal communication logs from Laurent Industries… and a private contract signed under your name.” Liam’s eyes darkened. “That’s impossible.” “Someone is framing you,” she said quietly. “Or using your clearance to move weapons under humanitarian cover.” Before he could answer, a loud explosion shook the ground. The fortress walls cracked as debris rained down. Sirens blared. “Base breach! Multiple hostiles incoming!” Liam grabbed his rifle, shouting orders. His unit moved in perfect sync — covering flanks, sealing exits. Through the smoke, he saw a silhouette in the distance — black armor, reflective mask, cold and silent. Specter. The world narrowed to a heartbeat. Liam aimed. Specter vanished into the dust, leaving only a single whisper through the comms: “You’re on the wrong side, Captain.” And then silence.
