CHAPTER ONE
Sophie Damarco lived two different lives, and she made sure that both lives never touched. In the hospital, she was everything people admired, she was calm and equally had a sharp mind and a clean record. She spoke little but worked harder than most. The nurses trusted her, even the senior doctors noticed her, and so many patients felt safe under her care. She was the kind of surgical resident people described as promising. But none of them knew the truth about her. At night, Sophie became someone else. The quiet doctor disappeared, and in her place was a girl who chased speed like it was the only thing keeping her alive. The illegal racing ground on the outskirts of town was where she belonged. It was the complete opposite of the serene hospital, the engines were loud, the entire place smelled of burnt tires, there was flashing of bright lights, and the danger all felt more honest than the controlled halls of the hospital. Out there, nobody asked any questions, and nobody cared about her past, nobody knew her real name, Sophie Damarco, wasn't exactly her real name, and that was how she liked it. Years ago, she had been just Sophie. A young girl with a family that looked normal from the outside. But everything changed the night she saw her father, Franco, kill a man. She had not meant to witness it, she had only followed him out of curiosity. But what she saw stayed with her forever. She saw the anger in his eyes and the way he showed no regret after he had just killed. That night, her life ended and restarted. She became a witness, and her father, Franco, became a prisoner. Her mother, Nadia, never forgave her. They ran away to a new city, they changed their names and restarted life, but nothing ever truly changed. Nadia became an alcoholic overnight and brought home different men almost every week. Some of the men stayed and tried to have their ways with Sophie, the ones who left didn’t care about Sophie at all. And every time Nadia looked at her, there was blame in her eyes. “You destroyed us,” she would say to Sophie. "You ruined our lives." At first, Sophie cried whenever she felt hurt but later stopped. She learned to keep everything inside, including the fear, anger, and guilt that she feared. It all stayed buried under a quiet face and steady hands. But it had to go somewhere. So she took to racing, it was the only place she completely forgot about her problems, the one place she didn't hear her mother's voice in her head, the only place she didn't think about her father and felt control. Control was the only thing she trusted, that was why she never lost until tonight. The night started out like any other. The racing ground was alive with noise and energy. Cars were lining up as people shouted their bets over the music blasted from the speakers. Sophie stood beside her car, checking everything with calm focus. Everybody knew her black racing car, everyone made way for her as she came through. Some of them respected her, some feared her because they knew she never lost. “Ready to lose tonight?” a guy joked from the side. Sophie didn't pay him any heed until the murmurs started. Someone new had arrived. Sophie did not care at first because new racers came and went. Most of them were all talk and no skill. She leaned against her car, waiting for her turn, until she felt someone staring at her. She looked up to see a man standing just a few steps from her. His hands were in his pockets while he looked calm like he owned the place. He was not loud like the others, he did not even try to show off. But there was something about him that made people notice. Her eyes fell on his racer tag, the name read "Louis." She noticed that his eyes were glued to her. He didn’t look at her the way other men stared at her. He looked like he was studying her, like he knew something about her. Sophie frowned slightly, she didn't like that. “New guy wants to race you,” someone said. She pushed herself off the car without hesitation. “Fine.” Sophie gripped the wheel as the engines roared to life, her focus was sharp as always. The moment the signal came, the went off. This race was faster than usual. At first, Sophie stayed ahead like always until she noticed something. He was still there, right behind her, keeping up with her. "The hell!" She exclaimed her displeasure, that had never happened before. She tried to push harder, but Louis was not holding back, he seemed to be smiling through her frustration. One sharp turn was the perfect moment he needed, and just like that, he passed her. Sophie’s eyes widened slightly. "What the...." No one had ever done that, not even once. She tried to catch up, but it was too late. The finish was ahead of him, and for the first time, Sophie lost. The crowd reacted instantly. There were noises of shock and excitement everywhere. Sophie stepped out of her car slowly. Her face was calm, but inside, she was boiling. Louis stepped out of the car and walked toward her unbothered. “Good race,” he said simply. Sophie crossed her arms. “You just got lucky.” “Maybe I was lucky,” he replied. His eyes stayed on her. There was that same look again, like he knew something. Sophie felt an uncomfortable feeling in her chest, she had never seen him before, so why did it feel like he already knew her? She turned away first. “I don’t race the same person twice,” she said. “That’s fine,” Louis said calmly. “I don’t plan to disappear.” She paused for a second, then walked off without replying. But his words stayed with her and so did his eyes. What Sophie did not know was that Louis was not like the others. He did not approach people without reason, he had noticed her long before the race ended. She stood out from the crowd, and while she focused on the race, someone from his team had already started digging. Then someone walked up quietly to him. "Congrats on winning, boss. But just like you predicted, Sophie Damarco is not her real name, and she's on the run with her alcoholic mother." Louis rubbed his chin with two fingers in interest as he turned to face him. "Tell me more." "Her father is a convicted criminal, and from what I can see here, she has a pretty dark past.”
