Fire between us

594 Words
The forest was quiet, but the tension between them burned hotter than any fire. Kaelen sat on the edge of the clearing, fists clenched, jaw tight, staring at nothing—and yet seeing everything. Lyra. Her scent lingered in the air, sweet and intoxicating, taunting him with every inhale. Lyra stood a few feet away, shoulders squared, gaze defiant. She had survived his claim, and in some strange, terrifying way, she had thrived. Every nerve in her body still sang with the memory of him, yet her spirit refused to bow completely. Kaelen’s wolf growled low in his throat. He hated her. He hated himself. And he wanted her again—now. “You think this changes anything?” he snapped, his voice tight with frustration. “You think… after what happened, I will let you—” “I don’t think,” Lyra interrupted, her voice steady, cutting through the storm of his rage. “I know. I am yours, Kaelen. And I will survive whatever you throw at me. I am not weak.” The words ignited a fire in him, both maddening and irresistible. He stepped closer, each movement deliberate, predatory, and impossible to ignore. “You—don’t understand what you’ve done to me,” he hissed, voice low and dangerous. “You made me… lose myself. Made me want something I cannot allow. And yet—” Lyra’s pulse raced. She took a single step forward, bold and fearless. “Yet?” she pressed, eyes blazing in the silver moonlight. “Yet I cannot stop,” Kaelen growled. The restraint he had clung to shattered completely, and for the first time, he let his wolf take over. His hands grabbed her, pulling her close, pressing her against him, claiming her heat and scent as if it were the only anchor to keep his sanity intact. Lyra gasped, trembling but refusing to pull away. She had expected fear. She had expected rejection. But the hunger in his eyes—the raw, desperate need—made her own resolve sharpen. I am his Omega, she reminded herself. And he will not have me without acknowledging it. Kaelen’s lips hovered near hers, brushing her jaw, his teeth grazing the sensitive skin. “You are mine,” he growled, voice shaking with a mix of anger and desire. “Mine, and I—” A twig snapped behind them. Both flinched, alert, instincts screaming. Selene stepped into the clearing, flawless and poised, but her eyes were narrowed and calculating. “Alpha,” she said softly, but her tone carried ice. “I see the bond. I see what has… transpired. But Lyra is not suitable. You cannot—” Kaelen’s eyes flared. “She is mine!” he barked, voice feral and dangerous. “I will not be told what I can or cannot claim! I—” Lyra pressed a hand to his chest, steadying him. “Control yourself, Kaelen,” she murmured, calm despite the tension. “I will not let her ruin us. You—don’t have to fight me anymore. Let me in… fully.” The words struck him like lightning. His wolf roared, his need pulsing through every vein, and Kaelen realized with a feral thrill that he could no longer deny her—not to the world, not to Selene, and not to himself. The fire between them burned brighter than ever, a dangerous, irresistible flame that neither pride nor fury could extinguish. And for the first time, Kaelen understood: rejection was impossible. Desire would always win.
