Before the pack

1051 Words
The sun had barely risen when the summons went out. Every member of the Ashen Moon pack gathered in the central clearing, forming a wide circle beneath the towering pines. The ground was still damp with morning dew, the air thick with anticipation. Something was wrong. Kaelen stood at the center of the clearing, tall and immovable, his presence commanding immediate silence. His dark eyes scanned the crowd with the cold authority of an Alpha who tolerated no disobedience. Beside him stood Selene. Perfect. Composed. Dangerous. And several steps behind them, Lyra. The whispers started immediately. “Why is the Omega here?” “Isn’t she the one the Alpha rejected?” “I heard the bond still exists…” Lyra felt every word like a weight on her shoulders, but she forced herself to stand tall. Her heart pounded violently, yet her feet refused to move. For the first time since arriving in the pack, she refused to shrink. Kaelen’s wolf stirred inside him. He could feel her fear. And her strength. Both fed the bond between them like fire. Selene stepped forward gracefully, raising her voice just enough for everyone to hear. “Members of the Ashen Moon pack,” she began smoothly. “We gather today because a matter of leadership must be addressed.” Kaelen’s jaw tightened. He had not agreed to this. Selene continued, ignoring the warning rumble building in his chest. “Our Alpha has allowed himself to be… distracted. Influenced by a bond that should never have been accepted.” A murmur spread through the pack. Lyra’s chest tightened, but she kept her gaze steady. Selene turned slowly toward her, her smile thin. “This Omega,” she said, her tone dripping with quiet disdain, “has disrupted the balance of our pack. She is weak, untrained, and unworthy of standing beside an Alpha.” Kaelen’s growl cut through the clearing like thunder. “Careful, Selene.” But Selene wasn’t finished. “If Kaelen insists on keeping her,” she continued loudly, “then the pack deserves proof that she is not the liability everyone believes her to be.” The crowd shifted uneasily. Selene’s eyes gleamed. “I challenge the Omega.” Silence crashed over the clearing. Lyra’s stomach dropped. A challenge between wolves was serious. Dangerous. Sometimes fatal. Kaelen stepped forward immediately, fury blazing in his eyes. “No.” The single word shook the air. “She will not fight you.” Selene tilted her head slightly. “Why not?” she asked sweetly. “If she is truly your mate… if she is truly worthy… then surely she can prove it.” Kaelen’s hands clenched into fists. His wolf was dangerously close to the surface now. “You will not touch her,” he growled. But Lyra stepped forward. “Kaelen.” His head snapped toward her. “No.” Her voice was calm. “Let me.” The clearing erupted in whispers again. Kaelen stared at her like she had lost her mind. “You don’t understand what you’re asking.” Selene was one of the strongest Betas in the region. Lyra… wasn’t even trained. But Lyra held his gaze firmly. “You said I was weak,” she said quietly. “You said I wasn’t worthy.” Kaelen’s chest tightened. “I never said you had to prove it.” “But I want to.” Her words stunned him. There was no fear in her eyes now. Only determination. For a long moment, Kaelen said nothing. Then he leaned closer to her, his voice dropping low so only she could hear. “If she hurts you…” His eyes darkened dangerously. “I will tear this entire clearing apart.” Lyra almost smiled. “I know.” She stepped forward into the center of the clearing. Selene’s expression flickered with surprise for the first time. “Well,” she said softly. “Perhaps you have more courage than I thought.” The two women faced each other. Opposites in every way. Selene moved first. Fast. Her strike came like lightning. Gasps erupted from the pack as Lyra barely avoided the blow, stumbling but managing to stay on her feet. Kaelen’s muscles tensed violently. Every instinct screamed at him to intervene. But he stayed still. Barely. Selene attacked again, faster this time. Lyra dodged, though the movement was clumsy. The crowd watched with growing tension. Then something shifted. Lyra closed her eyes for just a moment. She could feel the bond. Kaelen’s strength. His presence. His power. It flowed through her like warmth beneath her skin. Her eyes opened again. Selene lunged. But this time Lyra moved differently. She slipped past the attack and shoved Selene hard enough to send her stumbling back several steps. The clearing went completely silent. Selene stared at her in disbelief. Kaelen’s breath caught. Lyra was trembling. But she was still standing. Still fighting. And for the first time, the pack looked at her not as a fragile Omega… But as the Alpha’s mate. Kaelen’s chest swelled with something fierce and undeniable. Pride. Selene’s expression darkened. “Oh,” she said quietly. “So that’s how it is.” She crouched slightly, preparing for another strike. But this time the growl that echoed through the clearing didn’t come from her. It came from Kaelen. Low. Terrifying. Final. “That is enough.” The command rolled over the clearing with unmistakable Alpha authority. Selene froze. Lyra stepped back slowly, her chest rising and falling. Kaelen walked toward her. Every step deliberate. Every step protective. When he reached her, his hand wrapped around her waist and pulled her against him. Possessive. Unapologetic. His voice carried across the clearing. “Let it be known.” The pack held its breath. Kaelen’s eyes burned as he looked at every wolf present. “Lyra is my mate.” He tightened his hold on her. “And anyone who challenges her… challenges me.” Silence followed. Then slowly… One by one… Several wolves lowered their heads. Submitting. Accepting. Lyra’s heart pounded violently as she realized what had just happened. Kaelen had claimed her. Not in private. Not in anger. But before the entire pack. And for the first time since the bond formed… He didn’t try to deny it.
