CHAPTER ONE
The crowd erupted in happy cheers as I mounted the stage. I was clad in a beautifully designed one-piece swimsuit, thigh-length transparent socks and arm-length hand gloves. They all came in the color blue because that's my best color.
I raised up my chin and flipped my hair, as the stage lights brought their focus on me. This caused more cheers from my audience. Sensual music whispered its way into my ears from the speakers and my body began to react to it. My waist beads jiggled as I set my waist into a steady motion. The cheers increased as I glided the stage, doing the one thing I was good at - Belly dancing.
"This is my world" I whispered to myself as the music switched to a faster one. I wasn't surprised, I had practiced. Just when I had begun to make my audience go gaga with one of my popular crazy moves, I felt warmth bath my face.
"Urghhh!" I grunted in my sleep. "Don't tell me this is a dream? I'm famous!" I protested but sadly, someone was tapping my arm to wake me up. I moved my arm and turned away, wishing that my dream wouldn't come to an end.
"Wakie, wakieee" I heard the familiar voice say. "It's morning, Lily" I wanted to sob.
No! This wasn't happening?! When then would I become famous?
I sighed deeply as I opened my eyes slowly, letting my lens get accustomed to the light from the sun coming through my opened window. I knew who must have woken me up. My mum.
"Lillian? Should I do the greeting now?" I could hear the scolding in her voice as I turned towards her. I hadn't looked in her direction earlier. She had her usual stern face but she looked happy and refreshed.
"I'm sorry. I didn't notice you. Good morning mum" I apologized, not ready for an early morning scolding. I still felt displeasure at how I was snatched from the ecstasy my dream brought but what am I to do? I had school.
"Good morning to you, Lillian. I can see you had a good sleep and must have dreamt of something nice. Care to share?" I was taken aback by my mum's kindness. She was always strict and talking about what we should and shouldn't do, I've lost count of her rules.
"Huh?" I gave her a once-over, acting shocked. "What am I, ten? I bet, even a ten-year-old will not be sharing her dreams with her mummy, right now" I responded as I paddled to the bathroom in my oversized pajamas pants and Mickey mouse flip-flops.
"You still haven't answered my question, young lady". She said in a set tone. I smiled as I picked my toothbrush. Mummy never changes, back to being strict in a fleet second. Choleric much?
"Yeah. That's the mum I grew up knowing. Strict and set!" I complimented as I stuck my toothbrush into my mouth.
"What do you mean?" She sounded shocked. "Are you saying that I'm not nice?" She asked. I stared at her face from the mirror, in search of a hurt expression but I saw none. So, she took it as a compliment, huh?
"No, mum. You're nice but it's only when one has done something to deserve it. You're not the normal person who's nice to everyone. You live by rule number one. Earn the love you want" I concluded with an arched brow. I could see the smug smile on her face as she exited her position by the bathroom door, leaving me to my privacy.
I finished my business and walked out of the bathroom, stretching my stiffened limbs. I wasn't surprised to see mum still in my room.
Waking you up in the morning and starting a random conversation was her unconventional way of saying, we have serious business to discuss but as always, I'm to flow with her until she's comfortable enough to spit it out.
Mum turned to me and scoffed. "Don't tell me you are that stiff? You need to get back on a yoga mat"
I grumbled defiantly, "But mum? I'm just stretching because I woke up from sleep a few minutes ago. This has nothing to do with me being fit or not." I persuaded but she just sighed and plonked down on my bed.
"I'll be out this evening, Lily." She began with a far away look before turning to stare into my eyes. "I'm seeing someone. I pray he won't turn out to be like your father."
I don't know why but mummy always blames me for her divorce with our dad. It makes me feel uncomfortable and sometimes guilty but also puzzled as to why she would blame me out of her four children to be responsible for breaking up her relationship with our father.
"He won't mum" I placed my palm on her shoulder. "You're an amazing mother and the strongest of women I know, pulling through a divorce with four of us all by yourself and bouncing back as the fighter you are. No sane man wants to lose such energy." I assured her even though I knew that if she'd be a little nicer to her dates, it'll actually lead to something real.
"Thanks Lily." She managed a small smile. "I'm only telling you because I want you to be around for your younger ones today. You know, Tamara quit and I'll be out so, I'm putting you in charge of them, Riley and Ryker."
"B-Bu- - But, mum?" I stuttered. "There's Debbie to do that? I'm not their babysitter?" I retorted defiantly.
"Debbie's granny got into an accident and for a month now, she's been unstable at work. She's been coming in when she can and staying by her grandma when she can too! I can't ask her to come?" I stared at her speechless.
Why was she suddenly acting like she cared about someone?
"First the housekeeper quit and now, Debbie? Why can't we keep workers these days?" I grumbled in frustration.
"I understand that the twins are a handful, but-"
I couldn't let her finish. "A handful?!" I exclaimed with dilated pupils. "C'mon mum, admit it! Those two are devils! Rascals! Pure evil! I almost burned my arm the last time I tried to watch them. They are too evil for 10-year-olds." I reduced my voice because of the look on mum's face. "I'm sorry mum but I can't. I don't even know what you were eating while pregnant for those demons!"
"Shut up!" She yelled and electricity jolted through my body. "First it's Evelyn and now you? Lillian, listen to me. Those are your younger siblings and you have to start watching them. Another protest from you and I'll draw up a timetable for days where Evelyn or you will be in-charge." I swallowed anxiously, avoiding her blazing eyes. I knew she could do it.
"I'm sorry mum. I'll watch them" I apologized with a bowed head.
"Good!" She commended with a grim face.
"So, it's goodbye to dance practice, huh? More reasons for Miss Sheri to call me unserious." I muttered under my breath as I tried to pick out an outfit for the day.
"What did you say?" My mum's voice came again. I turned towards her, she was one foot out of my room.
"It's nothing, mum. I'm just bracing myself for the long day ahead" I responded, mendaciously expecting her to leave.
Mum did the opposite. She walked back into my room and shoved a piece of paper right into my face. In shock, I balked backwards. How did she find that?
"Oh… mum. I can ex-" I began blinking repeatedly from the shock but mum wouldn't have it.
"Oh! Save it! When were you going to tell me?" She had brought back her stern face which always caused me shivers.
"Soon!" I rushed to say. "I was going to tell you last night but you came home late and tired but-" She raised a finger and I clipped my lips.
"Don't you dare lie to me, Lily!" She yelled.
"We've talked about this? Haven't we?" She asked , flashing her dilated pupils at me. She always did that when she was angry.
"Yes mum.”
"But you went behind my back to sign up for a competition?" She paused and turned her back to me. "Or haven't I banned you from belly dancing?" She tore the flier carrying the details of the competition as every word left her mouth. "But, you went ahead to sign up for an interstate competition. So, tell me, how were you intending to bypass me on that day?"
"I'm sorry mum" I pleaded, picking up the pieces of paper she had torn.
"I don't need an apology, I need a confession! An explanation!" She yelled, her nostrils blaring in anger.
"I would have gone somehow? You're always at work and… and I could easily trick Evelyn?" I spoke slowly, squeezing my fingers and avoiding her gaze.
"Great! Just great! I don't just have a secretive lying child as a daughter, but I also have a dumb girl who could be tricked easily?" She sighed. "Evelyn!" She shouted.
As I watched her call out to Evelyn, I felt different things. Fear. Apprehension. Excitement to see her scold Evelyn. Anger against her unsupportiveness of my dreams. Sympathy towards her for dealing with a rogue like me.
Mum flashed her angry eyes at me and walked out of the room. I knew she was going to fetch Evelyn.
"Ouch! Mum, please stop" I heard Evelyn's voice and heavy footsteps. A smirk crossed my face but I immediately wiped it off and put on the pleading look I had on ,as mum dragged Evelyn into my room with her ears!
Oh Lord! That must be very painful. But I knew it's the best way to shake Evelyn off from her sleep. She was such a deep sleeper.
"Listen to me, both of you!" Mum began, panting while Evelyn tilted her hurting ear sideways, covering it with her palm. I scoffed inwardly Seriously, Eve? Can your palm ease the pain? C'mon!
"From today, I don't want to hear that any one of you went out without telling me and also, I don't want to hear a thing about belly dancing in this house! If you want to dress like a cheap w***e and shake your little waist, then you better leave to stay with your reckless father!" She stared sternly at both of us. "Did I make myself clear!"
"Yes mum!" We chorused. My heart was sinking inside of me. It felt like it had been stabbed continuously. What was so bad about belly dancing, anyways? Why can't mum just support me? Like she does for Evelyn's teaching job, Riley's passion for science and books and Ryker's football classes?
Did this have anything to do with her divorce with dad? Or she just hated belly dancing because of its scanty clothing?
I plunked into my bed as mum walked out. Tears cascaded down my cheeks in slow motion. I heard some noise and looked up to see Evelyn still in my room. What now? Will she mock me? What a sister she must be!
"You know you shouldn't be crying, right?" She started awkwardly. I scoffed loudly, what is she now? A motivational speaker?
"What do you mean, Evelyn?" I scowled at her. She didn't respond immediately but came closer and sat beside me. Perplexed, I moved away making just enough space between us.
"I know that we don't get along so well but-" I shook my head violently at her words.
"We never get along. “Don't” is a mild word in this case?" I rolled my eyes and folded my arms under my breasts.
Evelyn's face twitched and I could tell, I had spoiled the good girl in her. She stood up sharply and replaced the pretty view I was enjoying through my open windows with her lanky frame. She bent to bring her face closer to mine and this made me look up to her fiery gray eyes.
"Don't be silly, Lily! I love you as a person and I admire your tenacity and that's why I'm offering you an idea." She straightened up and looked away but I remained mute. She can't be serious about the 'admire' word, right? What was she going to say next? Her words seem to have meaning today.
Evelyn looked towards me and I knew she wanted to say something, so I sat up giving her my full attention.
