Chapter 1: Divorce on the Night of the Pregnancy
The rain fell heavily against the floor-to-ceiling windows of the luxurious penthouse. Lauren Boden stood in the middle of the living room, her fingers trembling as she held a small white envelope. Inside it was a pregnancy test. Two red lines. Positive. Her heart pounded wildly in her chest, a mixture of excitement and nervous anticipation filling her. For three years, she had been married to Nathan Dave: the powerful CEO everyone feared. Their marriage had never been perfect. Nathan was cold. Distant. Sometimes he treated her like a stranger rather than his wife. Yet Lauren never complained. Because she loved him. Even when his family mocked her. Even when society whispered that she was nothing more than a gold digger who married above her class. She endured everything. Because she believed one day Nathan might finally see her sincerity. And now… She was carrying his child. Lauren gently placed a hand over her stomach. A soft smile appeared on her lips. “Maybe this will change everything,” she whispered to herself. Perhaps a child would soften Nathan’s icy heart. Perhaps he would finally see her as his family. The sound of the front door opening suddenly echoed through the silent penthouse. Lauren’s eyes lit up. Nathan was home. She hurried toward the entrance, clutching the pregnancy test behind her back like a precious secret. Nathan Dave walked in with his usual commanding presence. Tall. Sharp. Cold. Even in his dark suit, slightly damp from the rain, he looked intimidating. His expression showed no warmth when his eyes landed on her. “Why are you still awake?” he asked flatly. Lauren ignored the coldness in his voice. Her excitement was too strong. “Nathan… I have something important to tell you.” Nathan loosened his tie, walking past her without interest. “Make it quick. I have work tomorrow.” Lauren followed him nervously into the living room. Her hands trembled slightly. “This… this is important,” she said softly. Nathan sat down on the couch, his eyes glued to the documents in his hand. “Then say it.” Lauren took a deep breath. Her heart raced. Slowly, she stepped closer and held out the pregnancy test. “I’m pregnant.” For the first time that night, Nathan looked up. But the reaction Lauren expected never came. There was no joy. No surprise. Only a dark shadow passing through his eyes. Silence filled the room. Lauren forced a small smile. “It’s yours,” she said gently. Nathan stared at the test for a long moment. Then he suddenly let out a cold laugh. Lauren’s smile froze. “What…?” she whispered. Nathan stood up slowly. His expression had turned terrifyingly cold. “You’re pregnant?” he repeated. Lauren nodded nervously. “Yes… I just found out today.” Nathan’s eyes hardened. “How convenient.” Lauren blinked in confusion. “What do you mean?” Nathan suddenly pulled a thick document from the table beside him. Then he threw it onto the glass coffee table in front of her. The sharp sound echoed through the room. Lauren looked down. Her blood instantly ran cold. DIVORCE AGREEMENT. Her hands began to shake. “Nathan… what is this?” Nathan’s voice was icy. “I was planning to give this to you tomorrow.” Lauren stared at him, unable to believe what she was hearing. “Divorce…?” she whispered. “Yes.” The word came out without hesitation. Lauren felt like the ground had disappeared beneath her feet. “But… why?” she asked, her voice trembling. Nathan’s gaze turned sharp and accusing. “You should ask yourself that.” Lauren frowned, completely confused. “I don’t understand.” Nathan suddenly pulled out his phone. With a single motion, he threw it onto the table in front of her. “Then explain this.” Lauren picked up the phone. The moment she saw the screen, her heart nearly stopped. It was a photo. A photo of her. Standing outside a hotel. Next to another man. The angle made it look intimate. Lauren’s face instantly turned pale. “This… this isn’t what it looks like:” Nathan interrupted her with a cold voice. “You really think I’m stupid?” Lauren shook her head frantically. “No! Nathan, listen to me” “You cheated on me,” he said bluntly. The accusation hit her like a slap. “I didn’t!” Nathan laughed mockingly. “And now you suddenly appear with a pregnancy.” Lauren’s chest tightened painfully. “It’s your child!” Nathan’s eyes turned dark. “Do you expect me to believe that?” Tears filled Lauren’s eyes. For three years she had endured everything quietly. But this accusation shattered her heart. “You think I betrayed you?” she whispered. Nathan’s silence was the answer. Lauren felt something inside her break. “Nathan… we’re married,” she said, her voice trembling. “I would never do that to you.” Nathan’s expression remained cold. “Sign the divorce papers.” Lauren froze. “What…?” “Sign them,” Nathan repeated. “Take the money and leave.” Lauren stared at him in disbelief. “You’re divorcing me… while I’m pregnant?” Nathan’s voice showed no emotion. “I don’t raise other men’s children.” The words stabbed directly into her heart. Tears rolled down Lauren’s cheeks. “You really believe this child isn’t yours?” Nathan looked away indifferently. “I don’t care whose it is.” Lauren felt like her entire world had collapsed. For three years she had loved this man. Protected him. Supported him. And now he believed she was nothing more than a cheating woman. Her hands slowly tightened around the divorce papers. The rain outside grew louder. Thunder rumbled across the sky. Lauren looked at Nathan one last time. “Fine,” she whispered. Nathan glanced at her again. Lauren wiped the tears from her face. But when she looked up again, something in her eyes had changed. The warmth was gone. Replaced by quiet devastation. “You want a divorce?” she said softly. Nathan remained silent. Lauren nodded slowly. “Okay.” Her voice trembled slightly as she spoke the next words. “But Nathan Dave…” Nathan frowned. Lauren placed a hand gently over her stomach. One final tear slipped down her cheek. “You’re going to regret this.” Nathan’s expression didn’t change. But something about the way she said those words made an uneasy feeling appear in his chest. Lauren picked up a pen. And signed the divorce papers. Without knowing… That the woman he had just thrown away… Was the true heiress of one of the most powerful billionaire families in the world. And the child he had just rejected… Was his own.
