# Chapter 11: A Night of Fire The bakery was wrapped in silence. Everyone had gone to bed, exhausted after the events of the day. Outside, dark clouds covered the moon. Elena lay awake, unable to sleep. Her mind replayed Damon's words over and over. **"If I tell you now... it will put you in even greater danger."** "What could be so dangerous?" she whispered to herself. A sudden crash shattered the silence. Smash! Glass exploded downstairs. Elena sat upright. Another crash followed, along with terrified screams. "Fire!" She rushed to the bedroom door just as Ryan burst into the hallway. "The bakery is under attack!" he shouted. "What?" Before Elena could react, thick smoke began pouring up the staircase. Damon emerged from the guest room, already alert despite his injured shoulder. "Ryan!" "The back exit is blocked," Ryan reported. "They've surrounded the building." Damon's eyes hardened. "They're here for Elena." --- Downstairs... Flames spread rapidly across the front of the bakery. Masked warriors kicked open the front door. Customers from the inn next door fled into the streets as panic swept through the town. The attackers searched every room. "Find the woman!" "Our Alpha wants her alive!" Mrs. Margaret stood at the foot of the stairs, refusing to move. "You'll go no farther," she declared. One warrior shoved her aside. She fell hard against a table. "Mrs. Margaret!" Elena cried. Without thinking, she ran toward the older woman. "No!" Damon shouted. It was too late. The attackers spotted her. "There she is!" Several warriors charged at once. Damon leapt between them and Elena, his Alpha aura exploding through the room. The wooden floor trembled beneath his feet. "You will not touch her!" The first attacker lunged. Damon struck him down with a single blow. Ryan fought beside him, forcing two more warriors back toward the entrance. Still, more enemies poured inside. "There are too many!" Ryan shouted. Damon knew he was right. If they stayed, innocent people would die. He grabbed Elena's hand. "We're leaving." "I can't leave Mrs. Margaret!" "I've got her!" Ryan called as he helped the older woman to her feet. "Go!" Reluctantly, Elena followed Damon through a narrow passage behind the bakery that Mrs. Margaret had shown her only days earlier. The passage led into the forest beyond the town. Cold night air filled Elena's lungs as they ran. Behind them, the glow of the burning bakery lit the sky. Tears streamed down Elena's face. "My home..." Damon tightened his grip on her hand. "I'm sorry." She pulled her hand free. "Don't apologize." "Save us." Before Damon could answer... A chilling laugh echoed through the trees. "So..." "You finally came out." A tall man stepped from the shadows, dressed in a black cloak embroidered with silver wolves. Unlike the others, he wore no mask. His crimson eyes locked onto Elena. At last. "We meet." **End of Chapter 11**
