The Rejection
# Chapter 1: The Rejection
The grand hall of the Silver Moon Pack was filled with cheers as wolves from every rank gathered to witness the annual Mate Ceremony. Crystal chandeliers sparkled above while the scent of roses and pine filled the air.
Elena's heart pounded against her chest.
Tonight was supposed to be the happiest night of her life.
At twenty-two, she had waited years for this moment—the moment Alpha Damon would finally acknowledge the mate bond they had shared since turning eighteen.
She adjusted her simple silver dress, ignoring the whispers that followed her wherever she went.
"That's the orphan Omega."
"She actually believes the Alpha will accept her."
"What a joke."
Their cruel laughter echoed in her ears, but Elena forced herself to smile.
Her wolf, Luna, whimpered inside her.
*"He's our mate. He'll choose us."*
"I hope you're right," Elena whispered.
The hall suddenly fell silent.
Alpha Damon entered.
Tall, broad-shouldered, and devastatingly handsome, he commanded attention without saying a word. His black suit only emphasized the authority he carried. Every eye followed him as he walked toward the center of the room.
The moment his blue eyes met Elena's, the mate bond flared painfully between them.
Hope bloomed in her chest.
He remembered.
He had to.
The Elder stepped forward.
"Alpha Damon, do you accept your fated mate?"
The room held its breath.
Damon stared at Elena with an unreadable expression.
Then he spoke.
"I, Alpha Damon Blackwood, reject Elena Ashwood as my mate."
The words crashed into her like a bolt of lightning.
Gasps erupted across the hall.
Elena's knees nearly gave out.
"No..." she whispered.
Damon's face remained cold.
"I refuse to have a weak Omega as my Luna."
Pain exploded through the mate bond.
It felt as though her soul were being torn apart.
Tears blurred her vision.
She searched his face for even the smallest sign of regret.
There was none.
Only indifference.
The crowd began whispering again.
"I knew it."
"An Omega could never become Luna."
"She's pathetic."
Elena clenched her trembling fists.
She wanted to scream.
She wanted to beg.
Instead, she lifted her chin.
"If rejecting me makes you happy..." her voice cracked, "...then I accept your rejection."
The bond shattered.
A sharp pain ripped through both of them.
Damon staggered for a split second before hiding it behind his usual cold expression.
No one noticed.
But Elena did.
Without another word, she turned and walked toward the exit while tears streamed silently down her cheeks.
Outside, rain poured from the dark sky.
Each step away from the pack felt heavier than the last.
She didn't know that before the next moonrise...
...she would discover she was carrying the Alpha's hidden heir.
