Chapter Three Georgia's POV Flashbacks. Muffled sounds. Confusion. Blaring lights and sirens. And at last, steady beeping sounds in my ear as consciousness seeped back into my body. I slowly pried my eyes, only to get stung by bright lights. I soon got accustomed to it and looked around to know where I was. Except my room back at home had a vitals monitor and a series of straps and medical items, I was definitely in a hospital. A fragment of the squabble with Kingsley hit my head hard. I subconsciously reached to the spot I had hit my head, it had been wrapped with a bandage. “Oh, that's why.” A knock came to the door and a nurse in blue walked in after. “Goodness, you are finally awake. Good morning to you, Mrs Thane.” Morning? How long was I out? “Good morning?” “How are you feeling?” The nurse was already at my bedside, taking records from the machine and readjusting the drip volume. “Light-headed and jelly at some parts of my body.” I tried to move my legs but it seemed to have a mind of its own. “That would be the effect of the drugs administered to you yesterday. You were in bad shape yesterday.” “How bad?” “Well, severe concussion, you bled badly from the wound on your head and em— aside that, we had it in control before it got even more complicated.” The nurse explained but I smelt a rat, something unknown told me something else had gone wrong.. “And?” I momentarily thought of Kingsley. “And nothing else, ma'am. You'll be up and running in about two weeks time.” I felt my chest caving in with pressure. “How about my husband? Where is he?” “He had been here with you throughout yesterday's night, he only left this morning, saying it was for the purpose of work.” How thoughtful of him. “Oh? I see.” I laid back down on the bed. Even with the delicate situation at hand, using work as an excuse was always normal for him. I wasn't surprised either way. “Your breakfast will be brought to you shortly.” The nurse announced after she was done with her job before exiting the room. Hours painfully passed and it was already evening. I was still stuck to the hospital bed and got constantly riddled with needles every hour. I heard voices outside my door, I raised my body a bit in curiosity. Shortly, the door was knocked and three people walked in; the doctor, Kingsley and a man I did not recognize. Kingsley has an indifferent look on his face while the doctor struggles to hide the uneasiness oozing from his figure. The other man just stood like a rock at one corner of the room. “Mrs. Thane, how are you feeling?” The doctor asked. “Quite alright. What's going on?” The Doctor asked, still looking at Kingsley for some sort of silent approval. “Go on. Tell her.” Kingsley coldy said, folding his arms across his chest. The doctor sighed heavily and turned back to me. “I'm sorry to break this to you. It wasn't only the injury you suffered, there was an accident and you happened to suffer a miscarriage. We weren't going to tell you until you were fine enough to take on the news but your husband— I'm sorry.” My heart rate skyrocketed through the roof, a chill ran down my spine as I heard the word ‘miscarriage.’ I lost my child? “It is a lie. My child is still there. No, it can't be.” I gripped my stomach. I almost lost the function of breathing as my body grew suddenly weak. Like a broken dam, tears rushed down my cheeks uncontrollably. “Doctor, please tell me it's a lie.” “I’m sorry but it is the truth. We've run a series of tests and it turned out the same. Please, you have to calm down.” The doctor tried to console me but I was no longer listening, all I heard was echoes. They felt helpless and could only let me sob my heart out. After four years of expectancy and enduring the mockery and talks of being barren, I lost my child in a day just because of a small accident. There were no words in the entire world to describe how crushed and battered my heart was at that very moment. I couldn't even bring myself to look at Kingsley because it was only going to make me angrier at myself and the world. I eventually exhausted my bank of tears and came to accept the fact that my child was gone, forever. “Okay, so can I go home now?” My voice slipped out, hoarse. “I don't think that would be the right thing to do. We have to…” The doctor tried to do his job when Kingsley cut him off abruptly mid-sentence. “Thank you, doctor. I'll take it from here. I want to have some time with my wife, please come back in a few minutes.” My blood boiled over. I almost ripped the sheets covering my legs in half. The doctor nodded in defeat, leaving the three of us in the room. I spoke before he did. “What's the occasion? Who's the guy back there?” “Easy, you are not in good shape to nag at me. He's my lawyer if you're asking. First, how do you feel?” The way he calmly replied irked me, it was very unlike him. I couldn't help but get the hunch that something was amiss. A lawyer in a hospital? I should ask for some popcorn. “As you can see, I'm in a mess but I'm alright.” “That's good to hear. Well, I'll cut straight to the chase. I wasn't going to say what I'm about to say but I have to and I regret it, honestly. Please, don't be offended.” There it was. Something was coming. “And what would that be?” My heart drummed against my chest, my breathing was slower than usual. “We are getting divorced.” Time paused for a moment. I did not believe my ears, I chuckled nervously as everything sounded like a joke. “We are getting what?” My smile dried up in an instant—His expression was deadpan, He really meant every word. “I am serious. Mr. Brown, please bring the papers.” The man in the corner finally moved forward with a white file in his hand. He reached for a document inside and handed them to Kingsley. I felt stupid, betrayed and mocked. Kingsley was capable of a lot of things but this wasn't on the list, something I definitely didn't see coming. A divorce out of the blue? He did not even consider my health by going extreme to the point of handing divorce papers to me on my sickbed, a situation he personally put me in. I just had a f*****g miscarriage! “King…” I tried to sort words to say to him but nothing sounded right. “You are really something you know?” He raised a brow. “Pardon?” I was in so much pain that I began to laugh hysterically. “I had an accident back at home, thanks to you. I also lost my child today and you heartlessly want to divorce me suddenly. You didn't even wait until I was okay and back at home before you did so. Seems the devil has a lot to learn from you.” His jaw muscles ticked. “You won't understand the situation I am in. It is for your own good and mine as well.” “I won't understand, yes.” I c****d my head and laughed even harder. “I don't think I ever will. Hand me the damn papers.” I snatched the paper and pen the lawyer handed to me. With tears clouding my vision, I quickly signed and flung the papers at him. “There you go, you're finally free.” I used the sheets to wipe my face dry from tears. “Don't forget this day, Mr. Kingsley. I vow that I'll make you pay for everything you've done to me, that I promise you. Now, get out of my room.” “I'll love to witness that day, love.” He rose gently and patted off the imaginary dust on his pants. “As stipulated in the papers, you'll receive a hundred million dollars as compensation.” “What's this about? A charity act? I'm more surprised you have that much to give away. You know what? f**k you and your damn money, I don't need it.” “You might regret this.” “Get out!” “Your call.” Kingsley retreated behind the door together with his lawyer and I could finally breathe. There were no more tears to cry, only the hardening of my heart, squeezing it dry of the feelings I might have had left for him. Deep in my heart, I swore to make Kingsley pay so badly for the damage he caused to me.
